Million Mile fundraiser Team
This September, I'm fighting childhood cancer one mile at a time with AlexsLemonade during The #MillionMile! The Million Mile is a fitness challenge that raises awareness and funds researchers so they can find better treatments and more cures for childhood cancer. I'm helping log as many active miles as possible and fundraising to help kids with cancer all month long. You can make a difference too by joining my team or donating to my fundraiser here: www.alexslemonade.org/mypage/3274431

Welcome back to the podcast I'm just start my second week of my second semester at university so I'm still trying to get the routine down, but it's a work in progress, and we'll just keep on figuring it out. So hence why I have been absent. Over a break, I realized that I never recorded an episode like I planned, but I did do some personal reflection. January 10, marked a year since I had my lung surgery or also known as a new pneumenectomy. Especially on my anniversary of my new pneumenectomy. I also share the audio clip of ringing the bell and insights on World Cancer Day.

All my life I can remember struggling in school and having to work really hard to try to focus on any assignment we were doing. Tests were always the worst also, because my brain would freeze up and I would be stuck... I'd see other kids finishing up their tests and each time someone turned in a test, I would be feeling an immense amount of anxiety as I would panic and just stare at my paper! I thought this was how everyone operated during tests. Spoiler alert it is not. Maybe everyone else was really smart and maybe I was just stupid..... Why did things not go my way... well after years of struggling the puzzle came together.

I was and still am an introvert but I was more of an introvert in high school. So how did I make friends? Well I joined clubs and one club in particular. Before I knew it I was going to parties. Sometimes I went alone and sometimes these parties were not even in my hometown. And it was definitely one of the most anxiety inducing thing I did to myself. I took risks I got out of my comfort zone . That is how I made some if my closest friends . There are benifits though to getting out of your comfort zone. Listen to find out more!

I thought the only way to be successful online was to choose a niche. So I tried to figure out what my niche was but it freaked me out because I didn’t want to choose wrong. Ironically, trying to pick the right niche was distracting me from doing the exact things that would have helped me get more clarity: namely, creating content. I didn’t have enough data coming in, so I constantly felt stuck. In the episode I talk about
Why you don't NEED a Niche
Problems from having niche
Results of possibly locking yourself into a niche

Freshman year I started my blog called, Brianna’s Bandwagon. I didn’t think much of it at first but now I am happy to say it has been one of the best decisions. It has become my platform to tell my story. I cannot tell you how many times I have gotten Instagram direct messages from my own classmates about how they read my blog posts and how inspired they are. However, one particular message led to me finding my best friend. I didn’t even know of her presence but apparently she went to the same school. Without my blog, I would have never connected with her. I am proud to say that to this day I have my best friend because of my blog and presence on social media. Listen to the episode to find out the whole story.

Spending hours creating content on a regular basis can be stressful, believe it or not. In episode 11 I talk about how responsibilities that come with being a content creator have taken a toll. I share stories from the time when famous YouTubers started stepping away from the platform, citing mental health issues. I discuss how I once again being ambitious, had to stop and rethink my own priorities in my social media roles after taking on the role as the owner for a creator community instagram account.

In episode 10, I talk about my personal story of how I started having a cough and breathing issues that eventually persisted and went on for at least a year. I went to my pediatricians who first told me it was just acid reflux, Next it was dismissed as allergies. Yet I knew better than to accept that answer. I went through 3 specialist over the course of many months until I finally had answers! It was not the answer anyone wants to hear but it was an answer. My life was about to change drastically.

In episode 9, I talk about grades and the pressure it puts on students. We let grades determine our happiness, our ability, or the future of our success. Trust me I have been there. I believe people and society are so focused on whether someone is smart, that they lose focus on the person and their true qualities as they are in human being. The grades shouldn’t matter. (but you should still try and care a tiny bit : just put the best effort you can) When you die, your transcript won’t be on your headstone, and neither will your job title or your net worth. But the things that will live on are worth so much more than an A or an F. Just because someone gets an “A” in a class or a higher class, doesn’t define their intelligence. If something comes up in the future they can’t accomplish they may not have the perseverance to do it as much as someone who worked so hard to improve their lower grades.

In Episode 8, I discuss how If you have known me and been following me for a while. You know I have created a pretty consistent schedule for my blog and my youtube channel. I am creative so that is what I do. I recently realized I really am constantly creating. Whether that’s a blog post, video, photo, design, painting, story, etc. I have many projects going on why?
Society craves productivity. If you are not productive in life with projects-heck even your job you are seen as a failure in society. However, a little secret is that you don't have to do everything and you shouldn't feel guilty about the things you can’t/are not able to do. Taking a step back does not mean you will fail, it means you are presenting yourself a little room to truly live. I think you can be a go-getter without sacrificing your sanity. Time is valuable, so why not live it to the fullest, rather than being occupied by a constant state of stress. I will explain some tips for balancing your productivity and time for yourself.

In Episode 6, I tell the story of how I was diagnosed with a heart condition in middle school! I tell the story from the day I was diagnosed and even recall events after it. I thought everything was going to be all fine but when your heart beats abnormally for the longest time and then suddenly stops it does have an after effect of like an achy feeling. But that should go away. And now i am typing this the next day and i did go to school and it’s almost as if nothing happened. I went from school to my pediatrician to the ER all in one day which eventually led me to getting an EKG and getting diagnosed. I share how listening to your body is crucial when you have multiple medical conditions. This is especially true for women, because of the gender bias that exists in the field of medicine. Specifically during SVT, women faced the additional difficulty of being believed. The study from the National Library of Medicine concluded that providers minimized women's symptoms which led them to go undiagnosed for some time.
