First episode of this podcast for me. Really disappointed. To have a capital punishment discussion about this song is fairly ridiculous. The facts of the lyrics are: man reacts horribly to a lay off, sadly gets drunk and kills a night clerk. He is sentenced to life (98 and a year) and basically tells the judge he'd rather have the death penalty. End. How can you guys misinterpret this enough to bring in an advocate against the death penalty? If you want to stretch the lyrics, how about a night clerk dying for no reason? What about his family and loved ones? And to excuse this behavior in poverty and imply it is the fault of the system...wow. Factories close. People get laid off (I have been twice). You move on, suck it up and find a new way. I love the pure genius of Bruce's songs but I was hoping for interesting discussion--not whiney SJW crap.
