It was a big weekend for Ohio State's football program, both on the field and on the recruiting trail. On Saturday -- exactly three weeks away from the season-opener against Notre Dame -- the Buckeyes held their first scrimmage of camp? What were some takeaways from the scrimmage, per a source? Also on Saturday, OSU named its six captains for the 2022 season. Were there some surprises in the group? Then on Sunday, the Buckeyes landed 4-star safety Jayden Bonsu to enhance their already-impressive 2023 class. Dave Biddle flies solo on today's show to discuss those topics and much more, including the likely depth chart at tight end and additional thoughts. All of that is coming your way on the Monday 5ish. What is the latest from Ohio State's preseason camp, more than a week in? Specifically, what do you need to know about the Buckeyes' linebackers, defensive line, cornerbacks and offensive line? Our Bill Kurelic and Mark Porter join for their usual Thursday hang. If it's recruiting news/insight you crave, this is the pod for you. Is the addition of Arvell Reese the beginning of a Glenville Pipeline resurrection? Could Bryce West be next? Where does Ohio State stand with defensive ends Matayo Uiagalelei and Desmond Umeozulu? Do the Buckeyes face a recruiting trail disadvantage because Ohio does not offer spring football for high schoolers? Where are these two headed for scrimmages to report back on what they see? Ohio State has an excellent roster overall entering the 2022 season. However, there are some possible question marks, such as depth on the offensive line, and the overall talent at linebacker. The Buckeyes' season could rest on how the O-line and LBs play. The good news for OSU is there is reason for optimism regarding both units, and that's one of the many things Dave Biddle discusses on today's show. Specifically, how does the second-team offensive line look and could any of those guys be good starters if one of the current starters goes down with an injury? At linebacker, defensive coordinator Jim Knowles said on Tuesday that fourth-year juniors Steele Chambers and Tommy Eichenberg have "solidified things at linebacker" for the Buckeyes. He also had nice things to say about Cody Simon, Teradja Mitchell, Chip Trayanum and C.J. Hicks. One thing that is not being talked about enough is OSU's lack of depth at cornerback. They only have six scholarship corners on the roster (not counting kicker/corner Jake Seibert) and Knowles revealed on Tuesday that the Buckeyes are a bit banged up at the position. One of the players who was working on the side was sophomore Jordan Hancock, who has a lot of buzz as a possible breakout player for OSU this year. True freshman Jyaire Brown is having a very good camp thus far and lost his black stripe on Tuesday. He will definitely play this season, the only question is how much. It could be more than anyone expected. To add some depth at cornerback, safeties Jantzen Dunn and Cameron Martinez repped at corner on Tuesday. So, that helps mitigate the situation. The Buckeyes have plenty of depth at safety, just like they do at linebacker and on the defensive line. All of that and more is coming your way on the Wednesday 5ish. Ohio State has five Class of 2023 commitments from Florida ... currently. In the Class of 2024, the Buckeyes have offered 19 Floridians - most of any state (just 5 in Ohio). But we all know Florida is its own animal when it comes to recruiting. Well, we brought in the best today - 247Sports Southeast Recruiting Analyst Andrew Ivins - to dive deep on all things Florida recruiting. The Fort Lauderdale-based info machine knows these recruits better than anyone in the business, which is readily apparent. We hit all the names - Dijon Johnson, Carnell Tate, Brandon Inniss, Bryson Rodgers, Cedrick Hawkins, Mark Fletcher, Jeremiah Smith, Stacy Gage, Charles Lester, JoJo Trader and we even delved into some Georgia standouts (Jelani Thurman and Kayin Lee). Ivins also waxes poetic on why Florida recruits are different from all the others and it's not the last visit but the last commitment you want.  Spend 5ish with us this a.m., 'Nutters! For the first time since Marshon Lattimore, Ohio State has landed a Cleveland Glenville prospect. Four-star linebacker Arvell Reese selected the Buckeyes over the weekend, and Steve Helwagen joins Dave Biddle to discuss that, plus: * Is 4-star cornerback Dijon Johnson going to recommit to Ohio State? There is some smoke that it could happen, including from heavy hitters such as the Dean (Bill Kurelic) and the Fong (Steve Wiltfong). * What are our main takeaways from the first week of preseason camp for OSU? Who will be the top linebackers for the Buckeyes? * Chris Holtmann is crushing it on the recruiting trail. On Sunday, the Buckeyes landed 4-star forward Scotty Middleton, a few days after sealing a commitment from 4-star forward Devin Royal. The Buckeyes now have the No. 3 class in the country for 2023, a year after signing the No. 8 class in the land. The only two programs ahead of Ohio State in the 2023 class? Duke and Kentucky. Pretty good company to be in. All of that and much more is coming your way on the Monday 5ish. Many are predicting a national championship season for Ohio State, or at least a season where the Buckeyes will be one of the few teams in the hunt. This season's national championship game will be held at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles and the road to the title game begins on Thursday for the Buckeyes as they kick off preseason camp. * How does the 2022 roster stack up against some of the really good rosters we have seen at OSU over the last decade or so? We do an extremely deep dive into that subject. * What will be the two-deep on the offensive line? * What will be Cody Simon's role? * Switching to recruiting, what is the latest with 4-star 2023 linebacker Arvell Reese? Will the Buckeyes go back to their old Glenville pipeline to fill an important need in their class? Does Reese definitely want to be a Buckeye? * Will some of the recent misses in defensive recruiting open the door for OSU to flip recruits from other programs late in this cycle? Or help the Buckeyes land defensive players in the portal following the 2022 season? All of that and much more is coming your way on the Monday 5ish as Dave Biddle flies solo. Ohio State begins camp on Thursday. On today's show, Patrick Murphy and Dave Biddle give their thoughts on what is the biggest question facing the Buckeyes this month. We also address the elephant in the room: What in the world is going on with defensive recruiting? And how concerned are we about it? Also, will Ohio State have a top-10 defense this season? All of that and much more is coming your way on a robust version of the Monday 5ish. On today's show, Jonah Booker and Dave Biddle field questions from Bucknuts subscribers. If Ohio State has a top-10 defense in 2022, how much will that help with recruiting on the defensive side of the ball? Could they even flip some defensive recruits before the early signing period in December? When the College Football Playoff eventually expands, how many teams would we like to see in the field? Who thought starting NIL without guardrails in place was a good idea? And can guardrails be put in place in the future? A lot of powerful people believe some type of regulations should be put into place, but how? That plus much, much more is covered on this edition of the Friday 5ish. Ok, it hasn't been the best few days. We've seen key recruits commit elsewhere ... and it's gonna happen again this afternoon. Several more are considering breaking out of the class. Why? Did something at Ohio State go awry? Nope. But there are specific reasons for the aforementioned choices to play elsewhere. Bill Kurelic and Mark Porter are here to dive deep on all of it. Oh, and Ohio State could be on the verge of adding another elite QB prospect. Ho-hum. Spend 5ish with us this a.m., 'Nutters! What's next for the Buckeyes? There are many topics on the agenda as Patrick Murphy joins Dave Biddle for the Bucknuts Morning 5 podcast. They include: * Big Ten Media Days kick off tomorrow in Indianapolis. What are we most interested in asking about and hearing about during the two-day event? * How big of a role will Miyan Williams have backing up TreVeyon Henderson this year? What about Evan Pryor? * What are expectations for Julian Fleming? * Who will be the No. 5 WR? Jayden Ballard? * It is very likely that Tommy Eichenberg and Steele Chambers are the starting linebackers? What are expectations for them? Who else is in the mix? * Plus, we take questions from our live audience. Ohio State's defense was bad last year. And the year before that. We're confident it will not be bad this season. But can it be good? And what exactly constitutes a "good" collegiate defense? Top-30 nationally? Better? The Buckeyes will have an elite offense, so if they can be good defensively, they are going to be a big problem for their opponents. Can new defensive coordinator Jim Knowles get OSU to that point? Jonah Booker joins Dave Biddle for his usual Friday visit to delve into all of that, take questions from Bucknuts subscribers and more. All of that and much more is coming your way on the Friday 5ish. Our guys share that informed perspective on those topics like John Walker, Austin Novosad, Caleb Downs, Olaus Alinen, Arvell Reese, Tackett Curtis, Jayden Bonsu, Desmond Umeozulu, Miles Walker and more.
