Rick burst on to the Australian music scene in the 1990’s with his Breakthrough: debut album Heaven Knows. The album reached the ARIA top 3; and gave us singles like “Not A Day Goes By” and “Heaven Knows” all reaching the top 10. Ricks song writing influences go far behind the pop music world with deep ties to soulful rhythm and blues and country style writing. In this episode we talk about his origins from the small country town he grew up in, then being thrust into the world of fame to now living in Nashville where he owns a studio, record label, produces new artists. Frank Levi worked with the whose who of Rock and chances are you’ve heard his amps on your favourite albums or tours. Of course, no story about Frank is complete without mentioning the famous Marshall S.I.R. rental amps—the mystery machines that fueled some of the greatest recordings and tours of the ‘80s and ‘90s. For years, fans and players alike have debated: who actually modded what and what models were used on GnR's Appetite for Destruction. Today, we’ll go straight to the source and dive into the history around numbers 34, 36 and the missing 39. Backed up by Franks own S.I.R paperwork and schematics. Joining me is Brian Zircon, Frank’s apprentice who has been entrusted to continue the legacy of his work and offer his personal insight to Franks history. Brian has also been working with remaining members of the Doors and shares some information around the Hammond organs used by the band. To close out the podcast, Brain gives us some audio directly off one of Franks creations. Find out more at www.bumpingintothatsound.com.au Bumping Into That Sound Podcast.
Bands don’t come much bigger than GNR and my guest was there from the early days and directly responsible for managing them through the chaos of fame to navigating deals with the heavyweights of music industry. He’s a manager, producer, storyteller — and now, for the first time — an author. Alan Niven has just released his debut book, Sound and Furry, and it’s every bit as sharp, honest, and compelling as you would expect. For this interview I tried to dig into the stories behind the pages rather than trail down the obvious paths. The moments that shaped him and the times that challenged him along with some very personal insights. Alan Niven. Sound and Fury is available now.
