The scramble for CUSMA has begun. Lobbyists are lobbying. Negotiators are negotiating. And, while that’s all kicking off, there’s another less visible channel of diplomacy. The Canada-US Interparliamentary Group. A network of Canadian MPs, senators, and members of Congress who meet every year to keep our relationship going and talk through issues that could otherwise spiral into major disputes. This episode, host Sam Konnert takes a look inside the network of politicians trying to keep the Canada-US relationship running smoothly, and speaks with Canadian Senator Michael MacDonald and Politico reporter Nick Taylor-Vaisey.Host: Sam KonnertCredits: Aviva Lessard (Senior Producer), Sam Konnert (Host/Producer), Noor Azrieh (Host/Producer), Caleb Thompson (Audio Editor and Technical Producer), Max Collins (Director of Audio) Jesse Brown (Editor), Tony Wang (Artwork)Guests: Nick Taylor-Vaisey, Michael L. Over a decade ago journalist Laura Robinson broke this story of alleged abuse against Indigenous children at a school in Burns Lake, B.C.. The man at the centre of the allegations is someone who had risen to international prominence in the sports world. It's been a tale of twists and turns with the RCMP investigating the abuse allegations and declining to press charges. Robinson and the accused took turns to sue each other for defamation. Finally, the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal took up the case and just handed down a decision. And despite the fact that over the last decade nearly every major broadcaster in the country has printed and broadcast the name of the alleged abuser, we no longer can. There's now a publication ban in effect. Is this the final chapter in the story?Laura Robinson joins us today.Host: Jesse BrownCredits: Tristan Capacchione (Audio Editor and Technical Producer), Bruce Thorson (Senior Producer), max collins (Director of Audio), Jesse Brown (Editor and Publisher)Fact checking by Julian AbrahamAdditional music by Audio Network More information:Human Rights Tribunal orders RCMP to pay Burns Lake day school survivors — CBCCanadian Human Rights Tribunal DecisionDiocese of Prince George facing ten sexual assault lawsuits — CKPG Today‘Afraid to come forward’: Lawyer representing sexual assault claimants says many clients are ashamed to tell their story — CKPG TodaySponsors: Douglas: Douglas is giving our listeners a FREE Sleep Bundle with each mattress purchase. The scandals of Doug Ford and Danielle Smith continue to make headlines, but it appears to have little impact on them politically. Now, Ford is changing the rules around Freedom of Information to make it harder to hold him accountable. Smith has also been criticized for her government’s approach to information requests. This clawback on the access of information is a trend in other governments across the country. How does the public and the media demand accountability when politicians dominate the messaging through their own channels and limit the availability of information? As journalists, our job is to dig deep into stories. And sometimes, we dig far deeper than we ever thought possible. And those deep dives will often become our most interesting stories. And finding those stories usually follows a pattern.Something catches your eye, it draws you in. You start doing a little research on it.Then you find something that makes us go, “Huh…”You start pulling the thread, follow the bread crumbs, and slowly you find out just how deep the rabbit hole goes. And so we wanted to know, what rabbit holes all of you have gone down? We thought it might be things like wellness influencers, grifts, maybe some MLM scheme. But, the reality was both a lot more normal, and to be honest, a little bit weirder.Host: Sam KonnertCredits: Tristan Capacchione (Producer), Tony Wang (Executive Producer), max collins (Director of Audio), Jesse Brown (Publisher)Photo: Tony WangAdditional music by Audio NetworkThis show is available exclusively to Canadaland supporters. More than 24,000 federal public servants have received notices that their jobs could be at risk. That is on top of the 9800 public service employees who were already let go last year. Host Sam Konnert takes us inside the government, specifically, inside a single lab within Environment and Climate Change Canada. A lab tasked with making sure our water is clean and our food is plastic-free. A lab that could go from nine PhD-level scientists, down to one. What happens to the country when these workers get cut, and entire labs are decimated? Who pays the price?Host: Sam KonnertCredits: Aviva Lessard (Senior Producer), Sam Konnert (Host/Producer), Noor Azrieh (Host/Producer), Mia Johnson (Producer), Caleb Thompson (Audio Editor and Technical Producer), Max Collins (Director of Audio) Jesse Brown (Editor), Tony Wang (Artwork)Guests: Shirley Tagalik, Christine Bishop Background reading:25,000 public servants warned their jobs could be at risk. Sparks were markedly absent from the final NDP leadership debate, replaced instead by “violent agreement” amongst candidates. Meanwhile, the federal Liberals’ rightward shift leaves a wide gap on the left side of the political spectrum. Mark Carney is busy trying to Trump-proof Canada with a flurry of trade deals and whispers of a mega anti-Trump alliance linking Europe and the Indo-Pacific. Trade researcher Stuart Trew joins host Noor Azrieh to argue that more free trade isn’t a master plan; it’s diminishing returns with nicer branding.Plus, Ottawa reporter Sam Konnert breaks down Canada’s newly released Defence Industrial Strategy: 70% Canadian content, massive growth targets, and a promise to rebuild both the military and the domestic defence industry at the same time. The catch? Canada’s notoriously slow procurement system, and big questions about bureaucracy, “maple-washing,” and whether Ottawa can actually move at the speed it’s promising.Host: Noor AzriehCredits: Aviva Lessard (Senior Producer), Sam Konnert (Host/Producer), Noor Azrieh (Host/Producer), Mia Johnson (Producer), Caleb Thompson (Audio Editor and Technical Producer), Max Collins (Director of Audio) Jesse Brown (Editor), Tony Wang (Artwork)Guests: Stuart TrewBackground reading:Carney constructs a mega anti-Trump trade alliance – POLITICOTrump forces a rewrite of Canada’s trade strategy – POLITICOJohn Ivison: Canada's pivot to Europe for trade gains traction as Trump loses momentum – National PostDeconstructing the Defence Industrial Strategy - Philippe Lagassé’s SubstackU.S. Supreme Court decision on Trump's tariffs could bring more trade uncertainty to Canada – CBC NewsCanada’s defence industrial policy would rather Buy Canadian than Buy the Best – The Globe and MailCanada’s New Defence Strategy Is Bold and Unprecedented. What a lame interview of a Liberal MP! Are the Liberals buying ads on Canadaland?
If IDF consistent commit war crimes and every israeli is a soldier makes sense people complaining about israelis no matter the terminology
Really? The deaths of over 150 schoolgirls was the happiest news ever?
Canadaland your timing of this is exceptional! Lebanon and Ukraine are only bystanders as other countries deal with their problems, sovereignty is not at play at all. I am sure there are more countries that can also be mentioned.
The greving had just begun, and Canadaland decides that THIS (the fact that some right wingers focused on the fact that the perp was trans) is the most important story that they had to talk about? Really? What's wrong with you people? Even as a listener who leans left, I find it disgusting that Canadaland thinks that their fight with the alt right is the most urgent story regarding the tragedy at Tumbler Ridge.
lol...what is it that they say....politics is the theatre of the ugly?
very good content. but background music was overwhelming. too much of a good thing.
This is a waste of time episode interviewing a self declared "expert" whose ex-husband roped Spavor into failed low level spying in China which ultimately cost him his freedom and the Canadian taxpayer millions in settlement.
Why is San Grewal spending this entire show whining about a conservative politician politicking? Canadaland's audience is mostly left leaning, so it's not like you're going to convince a bunch of Canadians to hate Doug Ford as much as you do.
Why only get the opinion of only one side Noor?
Listening this morning 🌫🌬🇨🇦🤦♀️....several hours later still processing.....⚠️🦺📢😎
I'm glad to hear Lisa Goldman speak with some actual knowledge and empathy teaching Jesse just how much his 'Zionist incel bro' 'Palestinians deserve to die' take is just illogical and just plain immature. Jesse's interview with the Israeli High Council to Canada was just sad. Why didn't Lisa, or one of the many Muslim Canadaland contributors, do that interview instead?
Noor for PM 👏
shes right!!!
Guaranteed Jesse will not mention the zionazi film tiff had taken down and were "forced" to reinstate by the Israel lobby. This propaganda is being marketed as a documentarywhen it is no such thing. Canadaland lefty news? Not by a long shot.
1. We DID hit first with 100% tariffs on Chinese EVs. 2. This lady is biased as the ex-wife of Michael Kovrig. According to Wikipedia: "In 2023, Spavor accused Kovrig of using him for espionage without his knowledge, resulting in him unwittingly passing on information relating to North Korea to Canadian intelligence agencies. In November 2023, Spavor sought a multimillion-dollar settlement against the federal government for involving him in espionage activities without his knowledge."
Once this "expert" got the American proxy war in Russia wrong, her whole credibility falls apart. Canadaland is on the wrong side of two of the biggest conflicts in the world today, Palestine and that mentioned above, and until they wake up and do actual journalism, I'll never give them a dime. Nor should you.
30 minutes of whining without any new ideas or solutions.
ye right, posting the suck kid just a mistake FOH. unsuscribing
Really Jesse? Are you actually both-sidesing the war crimes of the Israeli assassinations of 4 Al Jazeera journalists living in a tent beside a heavily damaged hospital? Good heavens, you know that you have journalists working for you, do you not?
