A pro-John Brown episode! One of my favorite Americans! Patriot, Christian, anti-racist, abolitionist, and I think he was on the spectrum, too - Brown had mad Thunberg energy. A complicated figure, but I admire him.
President Trump has just stopped a war from popping off between Armenia and Azerbaijan. That makes 5 wars President Trump has stopped to date. But Orange Man bad, right?
This is the episode wherein my husband and I argued about whether or not to listen to the introductions. I lost this argument, precisely as I lost the argument about whether we should listen to the outros. (You can tell that I love him bc I actually quit arguing with him and even admit defeat.) So now I'm listening to the whole damn thing, but I'm doing so under duress!! ☹️😤
The tradition of giving vehicles and personal belongings female names is reflective of the fact that women were considered possessions for 6-10k years of human history. The narrator brought up the question and then pretended not to know the answer, so there it is. For further info check out "The Creation of Patriarchy" by Gerda Lerner - not perfect, but a great basic overview of the history of male supremacy.
Computer: "If you complete the project, you'll be the most famous scientist in history." Man: "But I'll destroy everything, the whole world!". Computer: "That's never stopped science before." 😂😂😂 See also: AI
This is my favorite OTR show. My husband and I have so much fun laying around listening to the old commercials and news broadcasts. Although the Budweiser jingle stays in my head for days. 🎶 When you say Buuuuuudweiser 🎵 You've said it all 🎶
Some neat Watergate coverage before this one. And apparently we used to have "Law Day" on May 1st, which was to celebrate citizenship and reinforce education about how our system of governance works. Whatever happened to Law Day??? Sounds like something the Dumberican people desperately need today.
I love when they include the news reporting about Watergate, it's so fascinating to hear how they covered political scandals back then and the different way they presented the news compared to today.
The Mona Lisa looks almost exactly like the portraits da Vinci drew of his lover, Salai. Even the same smile. It's not really a mystery. I've never understood why it's so famous, anyway - I think it's ugly as hell. It's like he tried to see how many shades of brown he could use in one painting, and it's even worse in real life bc it's also very small. Small and brown.
Arsene Lupin!!
I always like when they do these historical fiction episodes. The Romans were amusingly shouty.
I love when they leave the news in before the show starts. Before this episode the anchorman was reporting on Patty Hearst having been abducted by the SLA, the Iran-Iraq war, and gasoline shortages. Wild times.
been listening for 45 years or more
the voice of the chess master sounds like Fred Gwynne
Love these occulty ones!
