Created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, Cain is the elder stepbrother of Charles Xavier, empowered by an ancient occult artifact and bent on destruction. One of the most famous X-Men villains, over time Cain became a fairly reliable ally, particularly under the character's signature writer Fabian Nicieza. He won the fan vote for this year's X-Men roster before the tragedy at the Hellfire Gala that launched Fall of X.Cain is often teamed up with Black Tom Cassidy, whom many readers — and some writers, including Nicieza — have interpreted as his romantic partner, but to date this remains subtextual. Over the decades he's struggled to find a consistent role in the franchise, but his popularity was boosted a great deal by writer Judd Winick when the alternate Mimic of Earth-12 starred in the popular 2001 ongoing Exiles. Okay, this is actually a great character. A really, really great one who I wish I'd paid more attention to when she first arrived. A rough creation process, but she turned out amazing.

New Mutants was a much harder book to find on magazine racks, back in the days before comicbook stores. I knew some of the Illyana saga, but not all. I didn't know just how dark her story was. It puts her in a new light for me, and makes me respect her much more than I had The New Mutants movie was strange. Some parts were perfect, some were incredibly bad. Illyana's casting was great, her attitude seemed close, but making her racist was strange. Racism stems from ignorance, and she was not that

since I haven't read most of Bling!'s appearances, I have to go by what this episode tells me, but the Bling! and Mercury storyline makes her sound like a stereotypical predatory lesbian. That's not a great beat. Sounds like she has too much potential to be used so carelessly.

Shatterstar turned out to be a lot more interesting than I figured he would be, but the Loeb stuff and his origin are a hot, smelly mess. Also this episode told me a lot of ugly stuff about Peter David. I used to respect the guy, but his X-Factor book seems to have made all characters he wrote unlikable. Guess that makes sense considering the writer is unlikable, too.

Without a doubt, the most confusing and hard to follow character featured on Cerebro so far. She has so much potential, but seems to be hampered by her confusing existence and writers using her as wish fulfilment fodder and eye candy.
