The year of 2020 was one of the deadliest registered in recent decades. According to Instituto Nacional de Estatística, since the beginning of March, deaths have been superior to homologous periods by 13%. However, was COVID-19 the only direct cause of these deaths? What reasons are behind this excess mortality? On this episode, Stefano interviewed Francisco and Ruben to understand some of the conclusions they reached about this topic, as well as the main difficulties they found when doing the research project. Carris is a Lisbon-based public transportation company with almost 150 years of history, during which it cemented itself as a building block of the city’s transportation network. In 2017, the equity of the company and the public service responsibilities associated to it were transferred to the Municipality of Lisbon. What were the impacts of this change?

Strong Euro, Weak Euro: two cultures,one currency. A(n) (im)possible coexistence?
Is it possible for two different cultures to share the same currency? How? And what would advise it? In this episode, Professor Vitor Bento, an economist at the Bank of Portugal and author of the book "Euro Forte, Euro Fraco", talked to us about inflation throughout time, from a cultural, historical and political perspective. Some topics also discussed in this episode were the German case and the case of the Greek-Latin countries as well as the Portuguese economy and the effects and consequences of inflation.
Portuguese National Railway Plan - Frederico Francisco
Last November, the Portuguese Government released the new National Plan for the Railways (Plano Ferroviário Nacional). NEC interviewed the Secretary of State for the Infrastructures, Frederico Francisco, in order to get to know a bit more about it. We talked about the environmental sustainability of the Plan, and about its impact on the Atlantic coast of Portugal and on Portugal’s connectivity with Europe. The financial sustainability of the Plan and the credibility of its execution were also discussed.
