Sponsored by Bell & Co — Alderney’s leading estate agent, helping people find their place on the island.http://bellandcoalderney.comTess Woodnutt might just be Alderney’s busiest woman. She first arrived on the island by accident as a child, fell in love through her family’s sailing adventures, and somehow never left. Today she’s a picture framer, pig farmer, sailor, radiographer, and one of those people who keeps the island quietly turning — whether it’s through the Sailing Club, the Alderney Theatre Group, or just lending a hand where it’s needed. In this episode, Tess shares her story of raising two children born and bred on Alderney, and what it’s really like to live a full, creative, hands-on life on an island barely three miles long.We talk about her approach to DIY, her belief in healthy, sustainable living, and the unspoken magic of a community where everyone wears ten hats — sometimes all at once. It’s a conversation about independence, belonging, and finding joy in the small, beautiful rhythms of island life.LET’S CONNECT 👇Listen on Apple Podcasts:http://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/camtalks/id1479296317Listen on Spotify:http://open.spotify.com/show/7lHojlnWyTUneaEpkcBgKS?si=09035669ff454537Instagram:http://instagram.com/camcairnduffLinkedIn:http://linkedin.com/in/cameroncairnduffTikTok:http://tiktok.com/@camcairnduffFacebook:http://facebook.com/cameronfilmsYouTube:http://youtube.com/@camcairnduff
Sponsored by Bell & Co — Alderney’s leading estate agent, helping people find their place on the island.http://bellandcoalderney.comAt 27, Alex Purdie is one of the youngest “old legends” to sit down on CamTalks. A marine biologist and ecological scientist, he arrived in Alderney in 2021 on a Wildlife Trust internship and never left — trading mainland internships that make you fetch coffee for real responsibility surveying Ramsar sites, tagging ormers and counting seabirds on the edge of the Atlantic.Alex’s passion began with Jurassic Park and snorkelling trips on the south coast. That fascination has grown into a career spent among ganets, puffins and plankton — a reminder that life on Alderney is lived between two worlds: the land under our feet and the seas that surround us. In this episode he explains how everything connects, from blonde hedgehogs and slow worms to puffins and tuna, why Ganet Rock is one of the most extraordinary seabird colonies in the world, and how apps like iNaturalist are helping islanders record what they see in their gardens. We also talk about rats and rabbits, reefs and rockpools, climate change and plastic pollution, and why small islands like Alderney matter in the global fight for biodiversity. It’s a wide-ranging conversation about responsibility, resilience and the joy of discovery — with plenty of skulls, shells and specimens along the way.LET’S CONNECT 👇Listen on Apple Podcasts:http://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/camtalks/id1479296317Listen on Spotify:http://open.spotify.com/show/7lHojlnWyTUneaEpkcBgKS?si=09035669ff454537Instagram:http://instagram.com/camcairnduffLinkedIn:http://linkedin.com/in/cameroncairnduffTikTok:http://tiktok.com/@camcairnduffFacebook:http://facebook.com/cameronfilmsYouTube:http://youtube.com/@camcairnduff
Sponsored by Bell & Co — Alderney’s leading estate agent, helping people find their place on the island.http://bellandcoalderney.comAlex Flewitt first came to CamTalks five years ago in a North London warehouse; today she’s back in Alderney, running Anchors on Victoria Street, teaching music, and helping launch RidunaFest — a two-day, community-driven festival in the quarry. What began as a pandemic pivot to a bedroom studio became a whole new toolkit: finishing a performance degree online, building a home recording setup, and rediscovering why small-island life is fertile ground for big creative projects.Nearly two years into co-owning Anchors, Alex has learned retail from scratch — buying, styling and keeping the island effortlessly well-dressed — while doubling down on community: Alderney Theatre Group’s hit "Vicar of Dibley", the Fireman Mole gala ads, and a plan to make RidunaFest feel like “the best of the big gigs, done the Alderney way.” Along the way she’s reversed type 2 diabetes through lifestyle changes, found new energy, and started sketching the next chapter (hello, Anchors Home). In this episode we talk about warehouse London vs island studios, turning a one-night gig into a festival with top-tier tribute acts, what retail teaches you about people, why local theatre matters, health, discipline and abundance, and the simple power of choosing to build a life here. It’s a conversation about creativity, community and belonging — proof that staying can be the boldest move of all.“We don’t just sell the island. We make it sing.”LET’S CONNECT 👇Listen on Apple Podcasts:http://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/camtalks/id1479296317Listen on Spotify:http://open.spotify.com/show/7lHojlnWyTUneaEpkcBgKS?si=09035669ff454537Instagram:http://instagram.com/camcairnduffLinkedIn:http://linkedin.com/in/cameroncairnduffTikTok:http://tiktok.com/@camcairnduffFacebook:http://facebook.com/cameronfilmsYouTube:http://youtube.com/@camcairnduff
Sponsored by Bell & Co — Alderney’s leading estate agent, helping people find their place on the island.Andrew Eggleston first came to Alderney in the 1970s after his father spotted an article about the island while working at The Times. What started as a family move soon became a lifelong home, and by 1978 Andrew was helping to run Bell & Co — the business that still carries his name today.Nearly fifty years on, Bell & Co remains a true family firm with Andrew’s daughter Beth, his wife Janet, and a loyal team who’ve stayed for decades. Alongside it, Andrew has spent twenty years as President of the Chamber of Commerce, helping to shape the island’s economy and support local business. In this episode we talk about growing up between London and Alderney, why Bell & Co “sells the island first and the house second”, the quirks of small-island life from cobbles to bunker parties, what really draws people to relocate here, and the Chamber’s push for change — from leasehold lending to a new marina. We also cover Alderney politics, royal visits, and why safety and community spirit still set this place apart. It’s a conversation about family, resilience, and why Alderney is still “a living museum” worth fighting for.“We’re lucky. We haven’t made it — it just fell into our laps. And we appreciate it.”LET’S CONNECT 👇Listen on Apple Podcasts:http://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/...Listen on Spotify:http://open.spotify.com/show/7lHojlnW...Instagram:/ camcairnduffLinkedIn:/ camcairnduffTikTok:/ camcairnduffFacebook:/ cameronfilmsYouTube:/ @camcairnduff

Today he serves as a States Member and Chairman of the Economic Development Committee, helping to steer Alderney’s future. In this episode we get into his family’s history on Alderney, what it takes to survive Sandhurst on four hours’ sleep, learning to fly with the Army Air Corps, desert landings in 50° heat, convoy protection in Basra, and the mix of pride and pressure that comes with wearing the uniform.
