After a 6 month hiatus, I am back with the Carlson Cards Podcast! In today's episode I recap my experience with the 2024 collecting environment so far, and I step through my 10 favorite collection adds from the first half of the year.
Thanks for all your support! See you again soon.
In this week's episode we are joined by Jesse (@FlippityFlipCards on Instagram). Jesse steps us through his extremely impressive & unique wide-receiver collection. This includes sharing a ton of interesting acquisition stories and great "lessons learned" for the rest of us! I hope you enjoy this awesome episode.
In this week’s episode, we "break the ice" on hockey collecting with Adam (@EditionSportsCards on Instagram). Adam is a collector of Connor McDavid, Pavel Bure & Elias Pettersson. He has amassed an absolutely incredible collection for each of these players that is loaded with 1/1s, PMGs, Seismic Golds & more. This episode was a great opportunity to learn how Adam grew his collection & all of the learning lessons along the way.
In this week’s episode, Benedikt (@Vick7Collector on Instagram) steps us through his absolutely INCREDIBLE Michael Vick collection and journey to becoming what I would dub a "Supercollector". Benedikt originally became a fan of Michael Vick & American Football when he left Germany to become a high school exchange student in the US in the late 90s. This fandom/nostalgia translated over when 2020 hit and Benedikt was stuck inside his apartment with his family living in Singapore, and he decided to take a look back at the card-collecting hobby from his childhood. The rest is history!
In this week’s collector interview, PK (@pk32sportscards) steps us through his journey and incredible collection. PK grew up as a massive Boston Sports fan, but he ended up moving to Florida later on in life. During the years to come, he grew to be a HUGE fan of the newly added NFL franchise, the Jacksonville Jaguars. One of the major topics we touch on in this episode is how your collection can drastically shift as your fandom outside of cards does.
In this week’s episode, Ben (@brooklynbarrybright) steps us through his deliberate journey of targeting some of the best-looking and hardest-to-acquire football cards from the 90s and 2000s. We discuss Ben's strategies for finding cards that NEVER pop up and also touch on his passion for collecting NFL greats such as LaDanian Tomlinson, Peyton Manning & Michael Strahan.
In this week’s episode, Luke (@bleeckerstreetcards) takes us through his journey as a young child who quickly became enthralled with baseball history and dove headfirst into his father’s bin of old cards. Fast forward a couple of decades, and Luke now finds himself surrounded by autographed cardboard reminders of his favorite sports legends in history. In this episode, Luke also touches on some of his incredible set collecting endeavors that include 1948 Leaf Baseball, 2003 Topps Chrome Basketball, and 2019 Topps Chrome Sapphire.
In this week's episode, we are joined by James (@MadCityCollector on Instagram). James guides us through an absolute soccer CRASH COURSE. We cover a ton of knowledge & history on one of the most unique sports card segments (by my estimation). This episode was a blast seeing the passion that James has for this space and learning more about his journey and INCREDIBLE collection.
In this week's episode, we are joined by Kristina (@KristinasPC on Instagram). With the NBA season right around the corner, it was a blast learning more about collecting Luka Doncic & Maxi Kleber. Kristina shares a ton of useful tips/lessons learned/acquisition stories in this one. I hope you enjoy the episode!
What happens when you mix some of your favorite memories as a child, father, & husband with collecting sports cards? -- Tim's AWESOME collection. In this week's episode, we are joined by Tim McIntosh (@TimmersCards on Instagram). Tim has been a diehard 49ers fan ever since he received a signed post-card from Joe Montana as a child. In this episode, we get the chance to discuss the following: - Tim's collecting history (1980s-1993 and Tim's return from 2017-now) - Collecting 2000s vs 2010s & onwards - Superfractors & Gold Vinyls (their similarities, differences and tips for collecting) - Tim's favorite memories & parts of collecting with his son - 2014 & 2015 Flawless - The Mt Rushmore of Tim's Collection (Plus some awesome honorable mentions)
In this week's episode, we are joined by Jacob Linn (@JRLCards). Jacob is a collector with a very diverse set of interests across numerous sports. This episode made for a great opportunity to learn from Jacob's collecting history and see/hear about a TON of awesome sets, players, and cards. Enjoy this week's episode!
In this week's episode, we are joined by Nat Turner. Nat is closing in on completing the first-ever 1997 NBA Metal Universe Precious Metal Gems Green /10 set (with 3 cards remaining). This episode provided an awesome opportunity to learn more about this journey and some of the challenges/learning lessons Nat has experienced. We also touch on a ton of other questions/topics that should make for an awesome listen for both new and experienced collectors alike.
In this week's episode, we are joined by Andrew Lindberg (@cardsandsneaks on Instagram). Andrew is a massive fan of the Green Bay Packers and his collection resonates with this fandom. From Brett Favre and Randall Cobb to Curly Lambeau (and everything in between) this is one of the most fun discussions on team collecting I've had in the hobby. Enjoy this awesome episode!
In this week's episode, I am joined by Joey Colarulo (@the.e.trader on Instagram). Joey is a phenomenal collector to learn from. He started collecting in childhood and really dove back into the hobby in 2010/2011. Joey has a wide range of interests across three major sports and has been extremely deliberate about converting his collection from cards that are desired but can be purchased at any time, to cards that have extreme rarity and scarcity to them. His learning lessons over the past 30 years were a huge focal point of this awesome conversation.
In this week's episode, we are joined by Mark Sanchez (@MJS_SportsCards on Instagram). Mark is an extremely passionate collector who has a wide range of interests from Lakers greats to Fillipino Sports Legends. We discuss his recent completion of the 1996 Skybox Autographics basketball set, and we also discuss his tips for connecting with and learning from other long-time collectors in this space.
In this week's episode, we are joined by Zan (@zanoo23_sportscards on Instagram). Zan and I had a ton of fun with this one. We draft an alien invasion "Space Jam" style team for football players and discuss his journey finding his footing with 90s rare inserts and team sets. Zan also shares a ton of knowledge on detecting fakes floating around in the 1997 Metal Universe Precious Metal Gems Green set.
In this week's episode, we are joined by Caleb (@powerwh33ls on Instagram). Caleb's collecting strategy is extremely direct. He buys cards he loves of players he loves, and holds on to them for the long haul (while never going above his means to do so). His collection includes one of the most ridiculous Tom Brady rainbows you will ever see from Topps Finest. Caleb's journey has SO MANY learning lessons for all of us!
In this week's episode, we are joined by Andrew (@St._Croix_Cards on Instagram). Andrew is an extremely passionate collector that has a ton of unique collecting lanes. One of those even involves being a super collector of one of his former students, Brooks Lennon, that is now a star in the MLS! Another lane is diving headfirst into the 2002 Topps Chrome NFL "Ring of Honor" refractor /100 set and trying to complete the entire run. This episode was a blast, enjoy!
For this week's episode, I dive into my experience at my very first National. I stumbled my way through an absolutely wild show which included me spending virtually all of my money after the first day. However, I think it was well worth it in the end! I also share learning lessons and tips for myself for next year's preparation.
