At 5:30 PM on Tuesday RTA Member Jenna Mee Dosch sat down with therapist Rachel Forbes on Cause an Effect to open up the first of many conversations with AAPI members of the theater community and mental health community. After they completed our interview, we found out about the mass shooting at three massage spas in Atlanta, in which 6 out of 8 who were murdered were Asian women. Because we wanted to start these conversations with an RTA team members’ experience first, we also wanted to make sure they shared a few words here today before you listen to their episode. From Rachel and Jenna: While we are in mourning with the AAPI community, we also want to acknowledge our unique positioning within the community as transracial adoptees. Though we can empathize with experiencing microaggressions, fetishization, model minority stereotyping, and overt xenophobia, we also recognize our close proximity to white privilege and thus our disconnect from living in an Asian community with ancestral experiences of systemic racism. It is also worth noting that the transracial Asian adoptee community has consequently experienced perpetual confusion about belonging - i.e., “I’m neither fully white, nor fully Asian.” We hope that our words are heard and understood within this layered context as we grieve with the AAPI community. I have always been marginalized, but NEVER alone in the margins. When I created a Coalition as a part of the launch of my Second Edition, it immediately asked the question: "What if we all helped each other out of the margins? What if the disability community lifted the LGBTQUIA Community, and what if they held space for the BIPOC community, and we all changed theatre together?" Please meet the pioneers of Rock The Auditions CARE Coalition. They are the wild student and faculty at Oklahoma City University's Wanda L. Bass School of Music, who are changing the theatre culture at college with me, so we can change the industry from here. You can find OCU CARE on INSTA at @OCU_CARE. If we didn't have mental health issues before, we certainly have them now. But what if you grew up in a cultural environment where you weren't allowed to be emotional- much less ask for professional help? I watched Carlita Victoria stand in the MIDDLE of #blm, in the MIDDLE of the pandemic, and announce her unbelievable mental health initiative for people of color. Carlita took her OWN struggle with her emotional wellness, turned it into a healing mechanism for the community, and shared it with us. Does anyone remember when Joy Dewing Casting would have me come to their Pop/Rock auditions, and teach everyone in the holding room how to communicate " "feel "to a piano player (as opposed to tempo), so you could come in and have a better audition? If you do, you'll know Joy and I have been "Auntie Allies" in the theatre community together since the dawn of time. We're here to break down what ally-ship is, what it means to the bigger picture, and the many thrilling ways to mobilize our friends in the Black community. The reason why I created Cause an Effect was to take the shame and stigma off the mental health issues that come along with just being a human in the world. With Buoyancy and Transparency, Virginia and I speak candidly about living with multiple mental illnesses, surviving trauma, and what it takes to be in service with it in your art.
