I missed Sean Heely, The Barra McNeils, Screaming Orphans, the McDades, and The Irish Rovers. Basically, many of the artists in this week’s episode have Celtic Christmas concerts. 15:17 - Cedar Dobson "Good Christian Men Rejoice/God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen/Joy to the World” from A Whistle Wonderland: Christmas Melodies in a Celtic Style 18:13 - The McDades "Snow Snow” from A Winter Collection 23:02 - SUSTAINABLE CHRISTMAS TREES If you’ve been following me for a while, I am continually looking for more sustainable ways to live. Christmas is a great time to do just that. We Celts have long had an important relationship with the land and our environment. So I’m gonna offer a bunch of thoughts in the coming months. l read an article on “What’s The Most Sustainable Christmas Tree?” You can find a link in the shownotes. One of the most-interesting things I read was about Artificial Trees. You might think they are the most-sustainable. But it turns out that they are typically made with some of the worst, most-toxic types of plastic, polyvinyl chloride (PVC). My family prefers real Christmas trees. But there’s always a catch, isn’t there. The challenge with a regular tree is finding one that is sustainably sourced. Meaning is it shipped from across the country? Or is it locally grown? Or even better, is it a tree you can replant in your yard when the holiday is over? I’ll be honest. Replanting is more than we will do. However, did you know you can rent a Christmas tree? Yeah. That’s what I said when I read that. It’s not available in all areas. But it is possible to rent one. Then it will be planted afterward. If you’re artsy, maybe you can build your own Christmas tree. You could use a plant around the house or build a tree from scrap lumber around the house. Do a search for Christmas tree alternatives and you’ll find a ton of options. As for disposing of your tree, don’t send those Artificial Trees to the landfill. Instead give it to someone, donate it, sell it or repurpose it. That’s the best way to keep it out of the landfill. The same goes with regular trees. Sustainable Jungle writes: “Real trees that end up in landfills can be detrimental to the environment. This is because the tree decomposes and produces methane gas, which is 26 times more harmful than CO2 in terms of climate change potential.” So see if there are local collection services or repurpose the tree instead of sending it to trash. 26:12 - Irish Christmas in America "Air_March_Polka - The Snowy-Breasted Pearl, Freedom for Ireland” from A Long Way From Home 31:51 - Brobdingnagian Bards "Bog Down In Christmas” from Christmas In Brobdingnag 36:28 - Screaming Orphans "You Are All Mine (At Christmas Time)” from Happy Christmas Volume 2 39:30 - Mary-Kate Spring Lee "O Little Town of Bethlehem/Celia Connellen” from Carol of the Child 43:13 - THANK YOU FOR SPREADING CHRISTMAS CHEER! Christmas is a coming in 2022 with Triskele and the Celtic Christmas Podcast #64. Subscribe at CelticChristmasPodcast.com. Music from We Banjo 3, Reilly, Caitríona O'Leary, Triskele, The Barra MacNeils Welcome to the Celtic Christmas Podcast I am Marc Gunn. I am a musician and podcaster. We are promoting Celtic culture through Christmas cheer. I’m working on another new format for this show in 2022. Galway-based We Banjo 3 has one foot in Irish music and one foot in Americana music, seamlessly combining the virtuosity and precision in each genre’s traditional disciplines with the artful song-craft and infectious live performance of today’s musical landscape. This is their 10th year performing together to thousands of fans at Irish and Bluegrass festivals. Their latest album is called Open the Road. And I'm happy I looked up that information because I can also add it to the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast that I host. 0:53 - We Banjo 3 "Joy to the World" from A Winter Wonderful 3:40 - THANK YOU CHRISTMAS PATRONS The Celtic Christmas Podcast is brought to you by the kindness of Celtic Christmas fans on Patreon. Your generosity funds the creation, promotion, and production of the show. Join others to spread Christmas Cheer this holiday season! Sign up for as little as $1 per episode on Patreon. Winners of the folk rock/Celtic band of the year award by Wisconsin Area Music Industry for 2019 and 2015, Reilly have garnered a reputation for being an interactive, get-off-your-chair act. The band’s circuit continues to grow along with their reputation for being a highly respected professional group. National programs such as Good Morning Ireland, Blarney on the Air, and Paddyrock internet radio have featured Reilly. Celtic Radio Music Network rates them as five out of five stars. Their ability to adapt Celtic music to an American rock audience, and include unexpected rock favorites into their set, makes them the perfect eclectic choice in today’s watered down and predictable Celtic scene. Their latest album is called Durty Pool. You can find it on their Bandcamp page. 4:47 - Reilly "For You On Christmas" from Kick Ass Celtic Christmas 8:13 - PLAYLIST: Christmas Drive There a number of Celtic Christmas playlists that I published on Spotify. The Christmas Drive playlist is Christmas music you will enjoy while taking a holiday drive to see your family or friends. The Wexford Carols is a 2014 album of traditional Irish carols by Caitríona O'Leary featuring guest singers Tom Jones, Rosanne Cash and Carolina Chocolate Drops singer Rhiannon Giddens and more. The album went to No.1 on the Billboard World Albums Chart. 8:52 - Caitríona O'Leary "Tell Shepherds" from The Wexford Carols 15:16 - HOLIDAY FEATURE: Triskele Triskele, [pronounced Tris-Kay-lee] is the premier all~female Celtic band out of Albany NY. They are known for their stunning harmonies, singing in the Gaelic language and for their Irish wit. Noeleen, who grew up in Dublin and is the youngest of 16, taught Sharon and Jenn the Gaelic language through song. These ladies perform, primarily, traditional Celtic/Irish music, but also have written originals. Triskele not only revitalizes the Gaelic language, but weaves history and traditions about growing up in Ireland. This gives the listener a deeper appreciation and understanding of Irish/Celtic history. Triskele stands out in a Celtic music world dominated by men. They have gained fans and supporters with their ability to keep traditional songs traditional. Fans have stated that they enjoy hearing songs sung with the unique qualities of the female voice; given the timbre and rich, clear harmonies. I’m particularly smitten with their byline–Celtic Trad. with a Women's Touch Their song “Christmas Is a Comin’” is a new addition to the Celtic Christmas music world. But I’ll let them tell you more about it. 16:24 - STORY OF CHRISTMAS IS A COMIN’ 18:02 - Triskele “Christmas Is A Comin’” from Christmas Is A Comin’ Do you have a Christmas story to share? Al Church)” by Gaelynn Lea from Deepest Darkness, Brightest Dawn That was from today’s special holiday guest. She is on the latest Celtic Christmas Playlist. HOLIDAY FEATURE: Gaelynn Lea Traditional fiddle music tugs at the heartstrings, and it infuses feeling into what is otherwise notes on a page. There’s something transformative about it. Not only has Gaeylnn Lea mastered her craft, but her experimental use of this time-honored instrument adds yet another dimension to the sound. Melodies are stretched and harmonies are crafted by her use of live looping, paired with obvious classical training. It’s updated, and ultimately, very satisfying. Cellist Zoe Keating springs to mind as one listens to Lea’s use of her chosen instrument. It’s no wonder she has drawn attention for her music—she has really been carving out her own niche in the industry. Gaelynn has been playing the violin for over two decades, and there’s little doubt she’s comfortable with bow in hand. It really does take a person mastering an instrument before experimentation can be successful. The challenge is to depart from the norm and create something unique—all while expanding on previous training. The skill is still in there--but the music grows larger and more full. This is what Gaelynn does, and it’s a pleasure to hear the thread of the familiar woven in with the freshness of something new at the hands of an experienced artist. The musician has been recognized for her work—being chosen as the winner of NPR Music’s 2016 Tiny Desk Contest, recognized as a benchmark in the world of music. This competition brings in thousands of submissions, and to win is quite the accomplishment! Those who are looking for a forward-looking holiday collection of music will want to investigate Lea’s album, "Deepest Darkness, Brightest Dawn". The tracks that are included here boast many of the well-known popular carol names, such as Angels We Have Heard on High, Silent Night, Away in a Manger, and O Come, O Come Emmanuel--but you haven’t ever heard them played like this before. The 14-track album is an easy fit for anyone who is a true strings aficionado, and it would round out any collection of holiday music. Perfect for everything from a romantic candlelight dinner with your love, or at a family gathering, “Deepest Darkness, Brightest Dawn” is a delight to listen to. Experience the joy of hearing Christmas favorites that are coaxed into a new form through the hands of a talented musician. You can find out more about Gaelynn Lea at https://violinscratches.com/ “Silent Night” by Gaelynn Lea from Deepest Darkness, Brightest Dawn IF YOU ENJOY THIS ARTIST...
