In each episode, CFP Board discusses the latest in the financial planning profession, takes a deep dive into a key topic, and answers your questions about financial planning. Today’s episode is an update on current CFP Board news and activities with Kevin Keller, CFP Board CEO. Key Takeaways [:30] Dan Drummond welcomes CFP Board CEO Kevin Keller and hands him the mic for a dive into current events, starting with the news of the election of Douglas S. King as the 2021 Chair-Elect [3:02] On December 12 of 1969, 12 insurance people met and the outcome of this meeting was the seed to the College for Financial Planning, the predecessor to CFP Board. Kevin shares the plan for the 50th-anniversary celebrations and black-tie gala at the Adler Planetarium in Chicago: One Small Step! [8:20] Kevin shares some of the discussions he had with the board around setting the June 30th, 2020 date of enforcement for the Code of Standards as well as the difference with the effective date of October 1st, 2019. [14:10] Kevin touches on the guidance documents that the CFP Board provided — through the Standard Resource Commission — for firms to more easily adopt the new Code of Standards, and where to get them. [17:13] Dan asks what Kevin has been hearing when he’s on the road during the Certificant Connections Live, talking to CFP® Professionals. [19:53] Kevin looks to the future and talks about what is coming down the pipes for 2020. [21:36] Dan thanks Kevin for coming on the podcast and sharing the goings-on at the CFP Board. Jocelyn Wright is the Special Advisor for Gender Diversity for the Center for Financial Planning. Key Takeaways [:30] Dan Drummond welcomes Jocelyn Wright, CFP® and asks her to share a little bit about her experience and background. [4:40] One important aspect of diversity in the financial planning workforce relates to the objective of providing all Americans with financial planning services. Representation is important both in terms of relationship building and relatability. [6:13] Jocelyn touches on two diversity initiatives from the Center for Financial Planning: the women’s initiative was the first real step into gender diversity, and the workforce re-entry program geared at preventing the chutes-and-ladders effect. [9:27] In 2018, the Center for Financial Planning held its first-ever Diversity Summit in New York; it was a great success! Jocelyn touches on the coming November 2019 Diversity Summit in Washington, DC. [11:50] Dan asks Jocely to share her thoughts on the barriers that women and people of color may be facing in terms of getting into the financial planning profession, as well as some solution ideas. Today’s episode welcomes Sean Neary who is here to talk about what the Edelman Trust Barometer is, why it’s important, and its most interesting findings on the financial sector for this year! Key Takeaways [:20] Dan Drummond welcomes Sean Neary, Executive Vice-President with Edelman and asks him to talk a little bit about who he is. [1:29] Sean talks about the growing connection between policy-making and what happens on Wall Street. [2:20] The Edelman Trust Barometer is a survey of more than 33,000 people in 27 markets around the world that has been around for 19 years; Sean breaks down the survey’s categories, talks about why they do it and shares some of the key findings for this year. [4:14] The question is really do you trust or distrust a particular industry or sector. [4:49] Has Sean seen any trends in the financial sector over the last few years? And how does it compare to other sectors, say technology? [6:22] Sean digs into why technology within the financial sector generates mistrust — robo-advisors for example — this could partly explain the human resource shift a lot of digital financial companies have been making. [8:11] Sean does see a lot of company or even individual loyalty, even when the trust level for a sector is generally lower. [9:13] Dan talks about the last item on the Trust 10 list — companies can improve social conditions in the communities in which it operates — and asks Sean to weigh in on the whopping 9 point increase from last year! [10:44] Any other interesting trends to look at? Why do women have less trust and confidence in the financial sector? [12:19] How would Sean advise CFP® Professionals use this Trust Barometer information within their practice? [13:13] Sean shares some parting thoughts. [13:30] Dan thanks Sean for coming on the podcast and breaking down the Trust Barometer information for listeners. Today’s episode is about the wide variety of registered programs certified by CFP Board, tune in to get a better feel for what is available and why! Key Takeaways [:20] Dan Drummond welcomes Dr. Mary Kay Svedberg, Director of Education at the CFP Board and asks her to talk a little bit about what her work entails. [1:52] Why are there so many available programs to choose from? These decisions are made alongside universities and depend on their needs and who they are marketing to. There is growth in the demand for higher level degrees in financial planning. [3:21] Mary Kay touches on the innovative ways education is being made available; blended learning has become more and more common. [4:10] Dan asks how the Ph.D. programs fit into the overall strategy for the future of the financial planning profession. [4:56] The programs are called ‘registered programs’ because the CFP Board is a certifying body and as such requires reporting from its programs in order to show compliance. [5:58] How can an interested person learn more about the available programs? The CFP.net website has a ‘find an educational program’ tool and the candidate forum is a great place to get some information from current candidates — who are genuinely active on the platform. [7:15] The 4 ‘E’s of CFP board include Education and it is made up of 2 requirements: Registered course work Bachelor’s degree So, in terms of career perspective, financial planning is appealing because everyone can call themselves a financial planner, but not everyone can call themselves a CFP® professional so it’s being taken more and more seriously. [10:35] Mary Kay touches on the upcoming events and programs, reminds everyone about the Baccalaureate Degree Discount for the examination and invites listeners to keep an eye out for spring(ish) 2020 for the next Registered Programs Conference. [13:30] Dan thanks Mary Kay for coming on the podcast. To get in touch with Dr. Svedberg, you can do so at education@cfpboard.org or visit Cfp.net for additional information. [1:00] Kevin and Susan share their reactions and thoughts on the future following the two-day seminar about client psychology they just participated in. [3:50] After her first trimester as Chair of CFP Board, Susan is still as surprised by the variety and breadth of actions, initiatives, and programs undertaken by the teams. [6:00] The upcoming Board meeting will dive deeply into the current state of financial services to get a better understanding of the CFP Board’s positioning and it’s future opportunities. [7:05] Kevin asks Susan to talk a bit about what her job as Chair entails and how she chooses to approach the challenge. [8:15] What do the subscription-based business models appearing and overall competition mean for the future of CFP Board? [10:32] What is the CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ missing to be recognized as a profession? [11:10] Susan talks about what the last 50 years have meant for the profession and what the future is looking like. [12:20] Kevin invites listeners to keep their ear to the ground for a Chicago event on December 12th. [13:00] The academic colloquium has to be one of Susan’s favorite initiatives since it moved the CFPs away from “rules of thumb” into a more professional practice. [14:32] Believe it or not, there’s a shortage in the way of next-generation CFP® professionals. [15:00] With the upcoming Code and Standard effective date — October 1st — how do Susan and the Board anticipate things unfolding?
