On this episode of Channel F podcast. It's my great pleasure to have interviewed the executor of the estate and former assistant of the late, great photographer Jim Marshall, Amelia Davis. Throughout the 60’s and early 70’s Jim Marshall’s iconic photographic images of musical greats like John Coltrane, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Miles Davis, The Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan to name just a few were to become legendary. Although his name might not be familiar to some his imagery will be instantly recognizable. Jim Marshall was also a great photojournalist is his own right, having been uncanny in his ability to read the zeitgeist of the history of the U.S. at the moment of tremendous societal change and upheaval that was the 60’s. We will be joined by Michelle Margetts a close an intimate friend of Jim Marshalls for decades, along with Amelia, she will give us some insight into this complex, sometimes haunted, sometimes contradictory and sometimes just plain maniacal photographic master and pioneer that was Jim Marshall. Join me then to listen to and revel in iconic imagery and the story of this fascinating man.   Want to see these amazing photographs? Davina and Malik are just an average young couple trying to make a go of it in the big, bad city.  But that’s all about to change, because they're about to come face to face with a terror far, far worse than anything that might befall them in the big city.  What's in store for these two unsuspecting innocents, in the seconds, the minutes and the hours that lay ahead?   Join me now for a winters ghost story, if you dare.
In 1968, my next guest moved to Canada, Toronto specifically, and he very quickly fell in love with the music scene and the nightlife of Toronto at that time.  After 15 years of working as a set constructor or carpenter for set design on the likes of Cbc's The Mercer Show and Air Force he retired. During the time covid, he decided he wanted to leave a legacy behind and show his love for the music and particularly the venues of the city, by building miniatures of the now silent musical landmarks where live music was played. Join me in conversation with Andrew Smith.   Check out the episode on YouTube and see the miniatures Spaces and Places: The Folk Art of Andrew Smith

Toward the end of the 80's my next guest hit Toronto with a splash of androgynous splendor and the drive to leave their mark on the Toronto music scene. With his larger than life persona and the sheer will of youth to fulfill a dream of having a hit pop single on the Canadian air waves, Kinga never lost sight of making that dream come true. On this episode I’m in conversation with writer and regular contributor to Channel F Mark Orchard. Recently he penned an article for the media site lastwordonsports.com on the topic of the often-unknown history of the LGBTQ community within professional wrestling. One event in particular and by chance, resulted in finally bringing gay, lesbian and trans wrestlers out of the closet once and for all.  Don't miss an episode Follow us on Spotify bit.ly/ChannelFpodcast  Follow us on Podbean bit.ly/ChannelFpodbean
As a boy living in the Ukraine my next guest dreamed of being a filmmaker. A few years after arriving with his family as an immigrant he realized that his dream could become a reality and took steps to start the ball rolling. An influential high school teacher gave him some sage advice about weighing the pros and cons of getting into the competitive and hard-working world of the filmmaking industry and after thoughtful consideration my guest decided to jump in feet first and go for it. Now at 33 Max Putintsev is an multi award-winning director of photography, Max will talk about what it took to get him to this point and what his plans are for the future as a cinematographer and Director of Photography. www.kinomax.ca/   www.imdb.com/name/nm2357048/  Don't miss an episode Follow us on Spotify bit.ly/ChannelFpodcast  Follow us on Podbean bit.ly/ChannelFpodbean
Misty Spins Japan

Misty Spins Japan

2021-11-0401:12:53

Back in 2016 DJ Misty Fujii decided to take a trip to Japan to check out the music scene and see if she could line up some dj’ing gigs. One night out with some friends she met a man that so captured her heart, she was certain that this was the man she was going to marry. Fast forward to a few years later and Misty picked up all her belongings and cat to move from her home in Toronto Canada and start a new life with her new husband in Osaka Japan. On this episode Misty will talk about how she acclimatized to Japanese life and the myriad of social customs that she learned how to navigate. Being a child born out of an interracial marriage, Misty will relate her experiences of being a person of colour immersed in a society where by and large people of colour were a rarity.     Don't miss an episode of Night Beat Radio at www.mixcloud.com/djmistyrocknroll Check out the adventures of DJ Misty on instagram @djmisty  @fujiiyamamam  Don't miss an episode Follow us on Spotify bit.ly/ChannelFpodcast  Follow us on Podbean bit.ly/ChannelFpodbean
In episode 2 of The Wavelengths Of Jonny Dovercourt, we talk about the beginnings of what was to become Wavelength and the influences that prompted a coalition of friends to move forward with the idea. He’ll talk about a change in direction for his musical ambitions, how he came to be at peace with his decisions and how the music scene has changed and grown since the ’90s.     Songs in order of play: [Intro] The Magnetars "Soft Gamma Repeater" [4:55] Secret Agent "Everyone Here is a Paid Extra" [21:22] Christiana "League of Nations" [29:21] The Magnetars "Soft Gamma Repeater" [50:41] Republic of Safety "The Moon" Don’t miss an episode of Channel F podcast  Follow us on Spotify bit.ly/ChannelFpodcast  Follow us on Podbean bit.ly/ChannelFpodbean
My next guest has featured in bands, such as Secret Agent and A Tuesday Weld, among many others over the last 25 years or so. As well as being a prolific musician and book author, Jonathan Bunce aka Jonny Dovercourt has been a very big part of WAVELENGTH, an initiative he co-founded in the early 2000’s promoting bands of various musical genres as well as upcoming acts like Peaches, Broken Social Scene and Arcade Fire that featured under the WAVELENGTH umbrella and held in downtown Toronto music scene venues. On this episode of Channel F he’ll talk about his formative years and experiences of being a musician, the good, bad and ugly and what prompted him to start WAVELENGTH as well as becoming an author and writing a book chronicling the history of the Toronto Music scene. My guest on this episode is the lovely, vivacious, very funny, talented but modest, musical comedian, George Westerholm. For a few decades, George has been making us laugh with a unique brand of observational and howlingly funny humour. On top of all that he’s a comedy writer that has worked with the likes of Rick Mercer on CBC’s “Rick Mercer Report” as well as the talented alumni from “This Hour Has 22 Minutes”. So please join me in conversation with this very talented comedian as he talks about his life and times. For millennia humankind has dreamt or imagined of flying toward the heavens, possibly to be at one with their Gods. In the last 60 years, that dream has been realized and we inch closer and closer to becoming a space faring civilization. But in the last few decades there are some who wish to become modern-day Gods that lord over our world and escape it’s the earthly confines, or to negate their moral obligation to the social contract. My next guest wrote an article for Medium.com bringing our attention to a handful of these so-called benevolent elites who are willing to sacrifice the usual controls of labour and community power in order to realize their dreams of space while reaping the benefits of wealth, power and immortality.
Episode 12  Air date April 23, 2021  Derek Westerholm: One man and his psychic weapons  Since the mid 90’s, my next guest has been flexing his lyrical muscle and pounding on the door of the world around him and its psyche. Known for the complexity and brilliance of his lyrics Derek Westerholm leaves his gentle persona behind and batters your mind with his sometimes abstract but familiar words. On this episode he’ll talk about the things that have and continue to influence his musical journey while being the collaborative front man and vocalist for several critically acclaimed bands that have and continue to rock the Toronto music scene. Join me on Channel F in conversation with this brooding but humorous rock and roll orator and hear an exclusive preview of upcoming, unreleased titles from Psychic Weapons.  Songs in order of play –   Intro: On a Mission, Psychic weapons   [14:39] New Rome Falling, Parts Unknown   Exclusive preview of upcoming, unreleased titles from Psychic Weapons  [25:16] Field Of Options  [32:16] New Designs For Time And Weather   [43:48] One (Punch) Dub   [57:35] Circular Motion   [1:05:03] Four Humours   [1:22:59] Bound    Want to hear more music?     Psychic Weapons   https://psychicweapons.bandcamp.com/releases  Members: Derek Westerholm, Minesh Mandoda, Armando Lulu, Chad Storie, Barbara Vermeulen    ‘All On Fire’ (available on Bandcamp) is taken from the upcoming debut. My next guest, Babs Vermeulen, has been a working musician for the last couple of decades. As a teenager, Babs and others discovered that she had a very powerful, strong singing voice and her voice is what would define her in the coming years. One day though after listening to the to the likes of people like Nina Hagen, Babs realized that her true calling was to take her operatically trained voice and apply it to some good old rock and roll. She then proceeded to hit the Toronto music scene like a cherry bomb, shirking the cookie cutter conformity of conventional female acts and went about doing her own thing performing in bands alongside bandmates like the future Peaches among others. Throughout her musical journey, the aim for Babs was to shake things up and belt out emotions through her powerful and assertive voice both of which she did like a bright supernova. Join me in conversation with this talented performer as I reached her remotely from her home in Toronto.
A few years ago, my next guest and his wife decided to move from a once idyllic part of the U.K. and retire to yet another idyllic, picturesque village in France. On this episode I'll be speaking to Nick Broome about what prompted he and his wife to make the move to France for their retirement, he’ll talk about integrating themselves into French culture and their eagerness to have new life experiences and new adventures. Of course all of their plans, once the move was made, have been somewhat curtailed by the Covid epidemic in the last year or so and the restrictions that come with lockdown have had a significant impact on his interaction with the loved ones he left back in the U.K. But despite all of this he joins a growing trend among retirees to make the move to not so typical destinations.
Back in the 80’s the band KHROMA KEY was like a seductive icy cool blonde who rips out your heart and stomps on it with a patent leather pump, while bits of it drip down the sharp stiletto heel, night after night however you crave it so bad you keep coming back for more. My next guests are the infamous duo of Soma Simone and Ted AXE, and the co-founders of KHROMA KEY. Each artistically talented in their own right, they started a collaboration that refused to compromise their artistic vision and charted their own course both musically and in every other way. Now decades later, while many of their contemporaries had moved on to other things, Soma+Ted  want the world to know that KHROMA KEY is still here and that this 40-year rock and roll love story shows no sign of finishing what they started.
On this episode I talk to alternative travel blogger Mike Canzi. A few years ago, before a catastrophic explosion leveled a huge swath of the city and before Covid, my guest traveled to the city of Beirut for lack of a better word, a vacation. He'll tell us about his observations of a city and residents that have endured more than their fair share of strife and hardship but whos indomitable spirit remains somehow optimistic despite everything. We'll learn how Mike came up with the name "Someplace Nice" for his blog and his fascination with traveling to places that many of us would overlook. Join me on Channel F as Mike takes us on a fascinating trip to someplace....well decide for yourself.
On this episode I'll be in conversation with Tina Bonifacio as she talks about her new found interest in Bison farming and how her invite to the Sunrise Bison Ranch  gave her a new insight into the emerging trend toward  ethical, low maintenance livestock farming. Join me on Channel F and learn something new about these noble animals and how their comeback from near extinction is bringing them back to their rightful place once again.
Join me in conversation with multi-talented actor and children's entertainer Tim Machin, as he talks about his ongoing project Sing Along Tim and The Pacifiers. We'll discuss what inspires him to write and the elements it takes to make great children's songs, as well as hearing some songs from his albums "Bunchy Sleeves and Bendy Knees" and "Folk On Bikes".
On this episode of Channel F, I'm in conversation with my guest Mark Orchard. He recently penned an article for Medium.com on the importance of unions that represent and protect professional wrestlers in and out of the ring. Join me as he uncovers the behind the scenes intrigue and manipulation that goes on by the powerful promoters of this billion dollar industry.
