Description

Have you ever found yourself really wanting to get better at the game of golf, but because there are SO MANY different tips, and tricks, and gadgets out there, you don’t know where to start or what will work best for YOUR game?

Come along with host Dusty Brian and the “Chasing Red Numbers” podcast where we discuss all-things-golf and work hard to find the BEST ways of improving our golf games! We share our mistakes as well as our successes so that we can learn together, and get better together! We want to share your game-improvement and game-enjoyment stories as well. What has helped you get better, that might help all of us, too?

We also take time on each episode to talk about the news from the professional golf tours, plus the latest from the golf equipment manufacturers, who are more-than-happy to take our money! All of this happens each episode of the “Chasing Red Numbers” podcast. We are in this together as we discuss a love for the game of golf and as we work to get better at playing it.

In episode four, I follow up on my most recent PGA Tour Superstore lesson and how that is translating into positive changes in my own golf game; we recommend the "https://www.golfdigest.com/story/local-knowledge (Local Knowledge)" podcast, especially the great job by Keely Levins (https://twitter.com/kalevins (@kalevins)) in the episode, "https://lnns.co/gNXhwbrnHU_ (The Bootstrapping Life of an LPGA Tour Player);" and I reveal my membership in the Haley Moore (https://twitter.com/HaleyMoore_20 (@HaleyMoore_20)) fan club... if that were really a thing (wait, IS it a real thing??!!). In episode three, I give a summary of a recent lesson at my local PGA Tour Superstore, discuss the recent tournament results for the PGA and LPGA Tours, and pass along some podcasts and articles that I found interesting from the gear/instruction front. MY GOLF SPY LESSONS VS. NEW CLUBS: The folks at My Golf Spy (mygolfspy.com) recently discussed on their YouTube channel the various benefits of investing in new golf clubs versus investing in golf lessons (https://youtu.be/heTGaFueBRM (https://youtu.be/heTGaFueBRM)). It is an interesting discussion, and this is what our podcast is all about; what the best investment of our time and money as we look to improve! PGA TOUR SUPERSTORE LESSON: I recently took my first lesson from a PGA certified pro at my local PGA Tour Superstore. The lesson bay is equipped with a Foresight Sports launch monitor and video recording capabilities. I highly recommend finding a golf instructor who uses video and allows you to see what you are doing and how to correct your flaws. So helpful! PODCAST and ARTICLE SUGGESTIONS: I mentioned an article from Golf Digest that is published in the most recent magazine, but is not yet posted online. It is an "Equipment Lab" article by Mike Stachura (https://twitter.com/MikeStachura (@MikeStachura)) on the differences between a scratch handicapper and a 15 handicap, and their use of both blade irons and "super game improvement" cavity back irons. Data was captured using Trackman launch monitors, with distance and dispersion information gathered and analyzed. Interesting stuff! Another helpful article was written by Jon Sherman (https://twitter.com/practicalgolf (@practicalgolf)), located on his website (https://practical-golf.com/golf-lessons-guide/ (https://practical-golf.com/golf-lessons-guide/)). Jon discusses the value of taking golf lessons if you want improvement! Womensgolf.com also published a post from the President of the LPGA Teaching and Club Professionals, Deb Vangellow, titled, “12 Steps to getting the Most Benefit from your Golf Lessons" (https://www.womensgolf.com/golf-instruction (https://www.womensgolf.com/golf-instruction)). The article is not specific to women's golf, and it is filled with helpful tips for finding an instructor, preparing for your lessons, and what to do after the lesson is completed. Finally, I mentioned one of my favorite YouTube channels from the guys at Tour Experience Golf (https://www.youtube.com/c/TXGTourExperienceGolf/videos (https://www.youtube.com/c/TXGTourExperienceGolf/videos)). I highly recommend subscribing to their channel and watching the great content they put out! The motivation for this podcast is to be a resource for those golfers looking to improve, and who enjoy learning about some of the innovative products available to players today. Through these shows, we hope to encourage every player to get better by sharing the learning process, including both the failures and successes that we are experiencing. Perhaps you are a better player who is working on a certain aspect of your game; we would love to hear what you are working on and how's it going? Maybe you are getting lessons for the very first time (like our host!) and you want to help others who may be considering the same thing. We want to hear those stories! Send them in through our website, chasingrednumbers.com, or through our https://twitter.com/RedNumbersPod (Twitter), https://www.instagram.com/chasingrednumbers/ (Instagram), or https://www.facebook.com/ChasingRedNumbers (Facebook) pages! Trackman lesson and the TopGolf experience: Topgolf is an enjoyable place to take friends, family, or co-workers... really anyone you want to spend some time with, while also getting to take some golf swings! You can check out some of what they have to offer on their https://www.youtube.com/user/topgolfusa (YouTube channel). While Topgolf is fun, and can be used to scratch the "golf itch," practice time with a https://trackmangolf.com/ (Trackman) is much more profitable. I went to a local business (http://www.rokgolf.com (Rok Golf, Austin, Texas)) that offers the opportunity to rent a hitting bay complete with Trackman launch monitor data and video swing recording. Trackman offers free sign-up through the mytrackman.com site, where the data collected from your Trackman session is available to view. The amount of data is crazy (https://trackmangolf.com/what-we-track (What does Trackman track?)). They also offer a https://blog.trackmangolf.com/6-trackman-numbers-all-amateur-golfers-should-know/ (helpful blog post) about which numbers golfers should be paying attention to. Good stuff! MyGolfSpy Launch Monitor Review: We talked briefly about the https://mygolfspy.com/the-best-personal-launch-monitor-2019/ (review) MyGolfSpy did last year of personal launch monitors, that are much closer to the average golfer's price range, with the https://mygolfspy.com/the-rapsodo-mlm-launch-monitor/ (Rapsodo MLM) taking the top honor. Do you have one of these personal launch monitors, or possibly one that is not mentioned? Please https://www.chasingrednumbers.com/contact/ (let us know) if it would be a benefit to others of us! PGA Tour and LPGA Tour News: Dustin Johnson capped a great 2019-2020 PGA Tour season by taking home the Tour Championship and the FedEx Cup, along with $15 million. What did you think of the format for the final playoff event? Who's your pick to win Player of the Year? The 2020-2021 PGA Tour season starts THIS WEEK with the https://www.pgatour.com/power-rankings/2020/09/08/fantasy-golf-advice-tips-picks-safeway-open-silverado-resort-and-spa-north.html (Safeway Open) from the Silverado Resort and Spa in Napa, CA, where Cameron Champ is defending. Many are looking forward to the following week and the https://www.usopen.com/ (U.S. Open) from Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, N.Y. The LPGA Tour had an open week last week, as the ladies prepared for their second major tournament, the https://www.lpga.com/tournaments/ana-inspiration/leaderboard (ANA Inspiration) at Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage, CA. Last year's champion, and world #1, Jin Young Ko (South Korea) will not be defending as she chose not to travel from South Korea to the United States. However, players ranked #2-#9 on the ladies world Rolex rankings will be in the field and it looks to be another great tournament, complete with https://www.lpga.com/news/2020/ana-inspiration-brings-stars-to-desert-for-major (hot temperatures)! Our desire is to make https://my.captivate.fm/chasingrednumbers.com (Chasing Red Numbers) a show that helps people get better at the game of golf and enjoy playing! In this first episode, we introduce our show, and you get to meet our host, Dusty Brian. Dusty shares a little of his personal golf story, and his desire to improve. Dusty wants to share his mistakes and successes so that we can all learn what might work for bringing our handicaps down. Professional Tour News: We recap Dustin Johnson's dominant win at the https://www.pgatour.com/tournaments/the-northern-trust.html (Northern Trust), where he jumped to the top of the FedExCup standings and regained the top spot in the http://www.owgr.com/ (World Golf Rankings). The PGA Tour shifts to Olympia Fields Country Club in suburban Chicago for the https://bmwchampionshipusa.com/ (BMW Championship), the second leg of the https://www.pgatour.com/fedexcup.html (FedExCup Playoffs), with a field of the top 70 players in the FedExCup standings. Sophia Popov provided a wonderful story with her win at the https://www.aigwomensopen.com/ (AIG Women's Open) this past weekend, finishing with a two shot victory in the major event held at Royal Troon. Previously, Popov had no official status on the https://my.captivate.fm/lpga.com (LPGA Tour), and was ranked #304 in the world. Phil Mickelson won in his first PGA Tour Champions event, the https://www.pgatour.com/champions/daily-wrapup/2020/08/26/phil-mickelson-wins-2020-pga-tour-champions-tour-debut-ozarks-national.html (Charles Schwab Series at Ozarks National). Phil eclipsed the field by four shots, finishing at 22 under after the three-day midweek event. It was fun to watch Phil seem to enjoy playing the game once again! Interesting Bits: https://golf.com/search/Paul+Sullivan/ (Paul Sullivan) wrote an article titled “Remote Controls” for his “Money Game” section in the most recent edition of https://my.captivate.fm/golf.com (Golf Magazine) (article not posted yet online). This is a very interesting article about the use of “remote learning” or remote golf lessons through the use of video and mobile apps that you would pay for. He mentions https://my.captivate.fm/skillest.com (Skillest), https://my.captivate.fm/swingindex.golf (Swing AI), BOTH of which use video analysis by a teaching professional. Paul also references https://my.captivate.fm/18Birdies.com (18Birdies) and https://my.captivate.fm/golfboost.com (Golfboost) which both use artificial intelligence to analyze swing video that you would take with your phone or some camera and upload to the app. The idea of these kind of sites and apps is to ultimately lower your handicap. There are also a variety of teachers who have published their own websites and are usually subscription based (https://my.captivate.fm/georgegankas.golf (George Gankas) is an example). Dusty also mentions the https://my.captivate.fm/golfdigest.com/schools (Golf Digest Schools) site, filled with a variety of lessons for various parts of your game. What sites or apps have you tried that have either helped you, or that you would stay away from, or what kinds of golf training aids would you like for us to review and test out? https://my.captivate.fm/chasingrednumbers.com/contact (Let us know)! We briefly discussed another https://golf.com/gear/report-golf-equipment-sales-reach-record-highs-in-july-2020/ (Golf Magazine article), this one from https://golf.com/search/Andrew+Tursky/ (Andrew Tursky), about a recent https://my.captivate.fm/golfdatatech.com (Golf Datatech) reporting that "golf equipment sales had a record-breaking month in July in the United States, recording the highest sales since the company started tracking data in 1997." This is good news for equipment manufacturers, resellers, and for golf in-general! How about you? Have your golf-related purchases gone up or down since March, when most of the Coronavirus mandates went into effect? Into the Future: In upcoming episodes, I will be...
