Dr. Karaiskos hosts professional development sessions on grief literacy, empathetic listening, suicide prevention, and the power of postvention. Dr. Karaiskos also helps run an overnight camp for children who are survivors of a loved one's suicide through The Kita Center.In our chat, Dr. Karaiskos and I discuss how suicide postvention is prevention, how we can improve our language surrounding suicide, and the importance of empathetic listening and storytelling and "story catching," to name a few topics. Notably, he served on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change committee, which was awarded the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize, created the innovative software COBWEB and its accompanying lab at the University of Toronto, and conducted research essential to implementing a groundbreaking green roof bylaw in the City of Toronto. In this episode, I talk with Raquel Espinosa. Raquel immigrated to Canada from the Philippines, leaving behind her husband, 3-month-old daughter, and the rest of her family to send back money and eventually bring her family to Canada. Now, Raquel lives in Canada with her husband, 13-year-old daughter, and two new babies, one with special needs. Life is not always easy for Raquel, but she has demonstrated profound love, sacrifice, and perseverance for her family. It was such an honour to talk with her about her story, and I hope you enjoy this inspirational episode.
