When you make that choice to drive impaired, you're not just risking a fine or losing your license. You're potentially sentencing yourself to a lifetime of what I experience every single day being treated as less than human because people assume you're drunk or high. This is just one ordinary day in my life with a disability. 00:28I left my flat and immediately encountered my neighbor all right duck going out. Do you want some help over the road? No, thank you. There are traffic lights. As I approached those lights, two girls on the other side of the road burst into loud laughter. My shuffle was their entertainment. At the crossing, a young man who had just passed me came rushing back, brushing past me just to press the button, as if I couldn't manage this simple task myself. Further down the same road, a woman looked up, saw my unsteady gait, shook her head in what she clearly thought was disgust and rushed across a busy main road to avoid me. The cacophony of car horns that greet me wherever I go tells the same story—smiling faces behind windshields, all thinking the same thing. He's drunk. 01:21In a building foyer, a woman saw me approaching from 100 meters away. She dramatically held the door wide open, standing at attention like a sentry, then expected profuse thanks when I finally reached her. Outside those same doors, a man watched me stumble and approached with false concern who careful, mate, haven't got money for the train, have you? When I said no, haven't got a cigarette, have you? The beggar thought he'd found a kindred spirit In an office. I asked the secretary a simple question. This is what awaits you. If you choose to drive impaired and cause an accident that leaves you disabled. Every day becomes a gauntlet of assumptions, condescension and dehumanization. Burdensome or dangerous. Your independence will be questioned, your capabilities dismissed, your dignity stripped away by strangers who think they understand your condition better than you do. The choice is entirely yours. But don't say you weren't warned about the reality that could become your new normal—not just the physical challenges, but the social isolation, the constant judgment and the daily reminder that society sees you as less than whole.
