One could say that Tron: Legacy (2010) is a polarizing film. If you were born at a certain time, it’s legendary Daft Punk score and slick visuals are probably pretty nostalgic for you. If you were older, and especially if you were a fan of the original, Tron: Legacy (2010) likely felt like a cash grab. Closing out our spooky month, we’re taking a look at The Vast of Night (2019). A small town in New Mexico starts hearing some disturbances in the night, and two young teens investigate where they might be coming from. This week we’re exploring the often forgotten genre that is “Horror Movies for Children”. It was a short lived genre, and almost entirely killed by the advent of the PG-13 rating, but this week we dive into Gremlins (1984) and its wacky sequel, Gremlins 2: The New Batch (1990). Gremlins is certainly responsible for traumatizing a generation of 80’s children whose parents thought it was a silly movie about a little furry animal. Akira Kurosawa's High and Low (1963) is a film that is as instructive as it is entertaining. It’s a classic police procedural that flexes Kurosawa’s directorial prowess, especially in its staging and blocking. The film keeps its tense atmosphere throughout and pays off with an excellent conclusion. Wrapping up our discussion of Spike Lee, 25th Hour (2002) is a contemplative and personal movie about regret. It’s a film that focuses on the sinking pit in your stomach when you know something will never be the same. It is an emotional examination of loss, and it wades through the feelings of each of the characters.
