Description
For over 25 years Cinematic Sound Radio has been playing the very best soundtrack music from film, TV and video games. We feature music from the golden age classic scores of the 30, 40 and 50s, the retro silver age scores from the 60s and 70s, all the way through to the 80s, 90s and the modern-day classics of the 21st century.
When tuning in you'll hear interviews with composers, orchestrators, musicians, authors, soundtrack experts and industry insiders. We also do deeper dives into some of the best scores ever composed. And, of course, you'll hear LOTS of great music.
We feature 10 unique shows exploring one of the most underappreciated art forms by people who are passionate about the art form. We hope you enjoy the programming as much as we do producing them.

Christophe Beck, an Emmy-winning film and television composer, has defined the sound of iconic productions such as FROZEN, THE HANGOVER franchise, THE MUPPETS and the cult classic series BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER.
Jason Drury had the pleasure of speaking with Christophe via Zoom at his Los Angeles home near the end of September 2024. During the conversation, they talked about his career to date, being tutored by the legendary Jerry Goldsmith, his work on BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER, and composing for the MARVEL CINEMATIC UNIVERSE, including AGATHA ALL ALONG.
But first, they discussed another of his recent scores, THE INSTIGATORS, which will be released on APPLE + in August 2024. Doug Liman directed the film, which stars Matt Damon and Casey Affleck as reluctant partners: a desperate father and an ex-con thrown together to steal a corrupt politician's ill-gotten gains. When the heist goes wrong, the two are caught up in a whirlwind of chaos.

Since launching the CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO PODCAST Patreon in April of 2021, we've offered our patrons exclusive perks based on the tier they signed up for. One of those perks is participating in all request programs. If you want to join in future all-request shows, please head over to our Patreon page, and join the community in any tier that is $5 USD/month or above. Once you do, you can participate in all upcoming all-request programs.
Before we get into today's episode, we must first discuss its origins. On October 30, 2023, I worked late into the evening to complete the first ALL REQUEST HALLOWEEN SPECIAL. The audio was recorded, tracks were chosen, and the editing was finished. I tried to export the show, and to my horror Adobe Audition crashed. I restarted the application and tried again. Same result, but this time I received an error message indicating that my voice-over file was corrupt. It took nearly an hour to record the voiceover and several hours to edit the episode. I was also in the midst of one of my busiest years ever, so I didn't have the time or energy to do it all over again, so I informed my Patrons that the show would be postponed and rescheduled for this year! Thank goodness I have a wonderful community of patrons over there, they understand and waited patiently for the show to be done.
Fast forward almost 365 days, and here we are; everything has been re-recorded, re-edited, and... I am pleased to announce that the show has been successfully exported for you to enjoy today!
For this first ever Patreon All Request Halloween Special show, you get to hear some spooky favourites from the biggest supporters of the Cinematic Sound Radio Podcast including Alan Rogers, Al Brown, Glenn McDorman, Don Mase, Will Welch, Angela Rabatin, Deniz Çağlar, Jérôme Flick, Stacy Livitsanis, Lee Wileman, Joe Wiles, Jeffrey Graebner, Victor Field, Eldaly Morningstar, Steve Karpicz, Dave Williams and Carl Wonders.
They requested tracks from such composers as Ronald Stein, John Harrison, Christophe Beck, Herdís Stefánsdóttir, Christopher Young, Jerry Goldsmith, James Horner, Wojciech Kilar, Bruno Coulais, Bruce Broughton, Dean Kopri, Joesph LoDuca, Alejandro Amenabar, and John Williams.
Thank you to everyone who participated. Again, if you didn't get a chance to submit a request but want to be a part of the next all-request program, we'd love to have you join the CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO PODCAST Patreon community. However, you should not feel obligated to participate. I am not forcing anyone to join. Remember, this podcast is always free to listen to, but if you want to support the program and join the Patreon community, we'd be delighted to have you.
Enjoy the show!

Many of these feature classic horror characters like Baron Victor Frankenstein, Count Dracula, and the Mummy, whom Hammer reintroduced to audiences by filming them in vibrant colour for the first time.
Composers featured include David Whittaker, Harry Robinson, Laurie Johnson, Franz Reizenstein and the great James Bernard.
The show is scripted by acclaimed film music journalist Jon Mansell, who, with the help of your host Jason Drury, will take you on a journey through the best music this renowned studio has ever produced.

Welcome to the highly anticipated latest episode of THE ARCHIVE on the CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO PODCAST.
Your host Jason Drury begins the show with the end titles from SKY CAPTAIN AND THE WORLD OF TOMORROW (La La Land Records) by Edward Shearmur, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year.
Jason then features some archival releases from 2024 that have caught his eye so far this year, including music from 1993‘s THE LAST ACTION HERO (La La Land Records) by Michael Kamen, the world premiere release of music from the classic 1983 cartoon series DUNGEON AND DRAGONS (Dulcima Records) by Johnny Douglas, and selections from the film that featured the first-ever collaboration of Steven Spielberg and John Williams, THE SUGARLAND EXPRESS (La La Land Records) from 1974.
Then, to commemorate the character's 85th anniversary, you'll hear "The Batman," from Michael Giacchino's score for THE BATMAN (Watertower Music) in 2022. After that, you'll hear music from Dragon's Domain Records' two 2024 releases. You will first hear music from the 1981 TV miniseries GOLIATH AWAITS, composed by George Duning, followed by selections from the iconic 1981 western adventure film DEATH HUNT, composed by Jerrold Immel.

On today’s program, I’m celebrating the 28th anniversary of CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO, which began on September 20th, 1996, at CHMR / C101.5 FM at Mohawk College in Hamilton, Ontario. The station is now called INDI 101.
For all of our anniversary programs, and yes, some years I forget to do one, I try to create something new. Sometimes it's clever, and other times it's just a simple, dumb idea that's relatively simple to implement. This show is the latter. Since the show is now 28 years old, I've decided to base it on that number.
So, you'll hear tracks that are either 28 seconds long, scores that are 28 years old, films with the number 28 in the title, the 28th track on the album, take place in 1928, or were written in 1928 featuring composers Mark Snow, John Murphy, Charlie Chaplin, Thomas Newman, Danny Elfman, Terence Blanchard, Joseph Conlon, Marc Sharman, David Arnold and Dominic Frontiere.
Admittedly, this is silly, but it was quite enjoyable to put together. In any case, I hope you'll enjoy it.

In 2014, author, film studies academic, and film musicologist Emilio Audissino published the first edition of his book THE FILM MUSIC OF JOHN WILLIAMS.
In 2021, the book's second edition was published. While focusing on John Williams' music and career by analyzing the composer's approach to writing music, the book also discussed three significant film scores in Williams' filmography: JAWS, STAR WARS, and RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK.
In early June 2024, Jason Drury had the pleasure of speaking with Emilio via Zoom at Linnaeus University, Sweden, where he was an Associate Professor. To commemorate the book's tenth anniversary, they discussed its origins and delved into John Williams' musical career, featuring music from many of the composer's most memorable scores.

In this episode, CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO pays tribute to a genuine soundtrack hero and pioneer… Intrada Records founder, Douglass Fake, who passed away at the age of 72 on July 13, 2024.
Who was Douglass Fake? Well, one of Doug’s closest friends and colleagues, Joe Sikoryak, wrote a beautiful obituary a few days after Doug’s passing on Facebook. You can read it HERE!
I personally never met Doug, but I did communicate with him and Roger Fiegelson, Intrada’s executive producer, many times when requesting albums to play on my soundtrack show, which began in 1996. Doug and the rest of the crew at Intrada have been supporting the show for over 25 years, and I do remember Doug telling me that if I ever needed anything, I should call or email him or Roger and they’d send whatever I requested down immediately. It didn’t matter if it was a new release or a release that came out ten years ago; if they had it in stock, they’d send it down.
We planned to release this episode a few weeks ago but a few things popped up that slowed down production (work and illnesses). On top of that, the fine folks at Intrada Records were guests on Robert Emmett's soundtrack radio program "The Norman Bates Memorial Soundtrack Show," where they produced their own three-hour tribute show to Doug on Saturday August 24, 2024. So, not to step on any toes, I decided to delay the release of my own tribute show to today.
So, on today’s show, we’ll be playing not only selections from Intrada’s extensive soundtrack library, but also messages of remembrance from fans such as Amer Zahid, Chris Malone, Ian Clark, Jason Drury, Jim Wilson, Nick Zwar, Lee Wileman, and Victor Field.
Doug’s was a legend in the soundtrack community and we owe him a debt of gratitude for bringing much joy into our lives. Thank you, Doug. You will be missed.
Enjoy the show!
PS – During the program, you'll hear me mention that Chris Malone produced a heartfelt tribute to Doug on YouTube. You can see that video by clicking HERE! I also mentioned an episode of The Goldsmith Odyssey dedicated to the production of Intrada Records RIO CONCHOS recording. You can listen to that episode HERE!

On Sunday, June 16th, 2024, Jason Drury traveled to London’s Barbican Centre to watch and listen to music performed by the world’s greatest film music orchestra, the London Symphony Orchestra. The evening celebrated the orchestra’s 90th anniversary of performing film scores. Under the direction of the equally great Dirk Brossé, they performed suites from twenty scores, some well-known, some underrated, all pure quality.
Listening to all that wonderful music gave Jason an idea. Why not produce an Archive Show celebrating the music of the LSO featuring scores all performed by this wonderful ensemble? So, that’s what we are going to do today. In addition, as with the concert, Jason will play one cue from the film or a small suite. And, because it is a ‘concert’, you will hear several of these suites with as little contribution from your trusted host as possible.
Welcome to Cinematic Sound Radio’s celebration of the music of the London Symphony Orchestra.
Enjoy!

The latest in the “Cinematic World of Sonic the Hedgehog”, follows Knuckles (Idris Elba) on a hilarious and action-packed journey of self-discovery as he agrees to train middle-aged cop Wade (Adam Pally) as his protégé and teach him the ways of the Echidna warrior. The series occurs between SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 2 and SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 3.
Award-winning composer Tom Howe has composed the original music for Paramount+’s original series KNUCKLES. In May 2024, for TALKING SOUNDTRACKS on the CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO PODCAST, Jason Drury talked to Tom about his work for the series via Zoom from his home in London, England. Also during the show, we will hear more music from the hit series, Knuckles.

This episode's origin comes from my time recovering from gallbladder surgery last month. I was looking for something to watch when I saw Richard Donner's TIMELINE on my Plex server. I hadn't watched the film in over 20 years... 20 YEARS?!?!?!?!... and so I thought I'd put it on to see if it was as bad as I remembered. It wasn't all that bad, but Brian Tyler's score really irritated me. So, after watching the film, I listened to both Tyler's replacement score and Jerry Goldsmith's rejected score and decided to write some notes. Well, you know me; I ended up writing about 700 words. For a brief moment, I thought about resurrecting my blog, but I hate sharing my writing, so I decided to turn it into a podcast episode. As I continued to write, one thing led to another, and before I knew it, my script was 2814 words long.
In addition to writing about TIMELINE, I also wrote about action music, which led me to write about action cues that subverted the norm using two examples by Michael Giacchino (STAR TREK and MEDAL OF HONOR: FRONTLINE). Then I remembered an interview from the early 80s where Jerry Goldsmith talked about the function of film music and writing a specific action cue for the 1971 film, WILD ROVERS. So, I wrote about that. I then remembered to write about my experience at TriCon 2024 here in Kitchener last winter and discuss my newfound appreciation of Graham Revell's THE CROW. I then concluded with a birthday shout-out to David Shire, who turned 87 on July 3rd, the day of this recording.
So, after finishing my FAVOURITE SCORES OF 2023 episodes, I recorded and edited this new episode, which I'm happy to share with you today. I really enjoyed the entire process of producing this episode. I liked having the opportunity to inform and educate by using specific examples instead of just doing what I've been doing over the past, however long it's been. This type of show feels more like what I do on Randy Andrew's THE ESSENTIAL SOUNDTRACKS (aka SOUNDTRACK ALLEY) than a traditional CSR episode.
Anyway, let me know what you think. Also, the name is temporary. I had no idea what to call what I was doing so I just called it SOUNDTRACK POTPOURRI, which is so NPR lame.
Enjoy!

RIPLEY, which premiered on Netflix in April 2024, is a neo-noir psychological thriller television series created, written and directed by Steven Zaillian, based on Patricia Highsmith's 1955 crime novel THE TALENTED MR. RIPLEY. The series starred Andrew Scott, Johnny Flynn and Dakota Fanning.
In late 1950s New York, Tom Ripley, a down-at-the-heels con man, is hired by a wealthy man to convince his prodigal son to return home from Italy. But Tom's introduction to Dickie Greenleaf's comfortable and leisurely life abroad turns out to be "the first step into a complex life of deceit, fraud and murder.
The composer for the series score is Jeff Russo, the renowned award-winning composer, songwriter, guitarist, vocalist, and music producer whose versatile talent has left an indelible mark on the entertainment industry, from captivating TV series to compelling film scores and beyond.
Jason Drury had the pleasure of speaking with Jeff via Zoom at his Los Angeles home in April 2024. During the interview, they discussed his extensive work on RIPLEY as well as his career to date, with a focus on a number of his hit shows from his extensive resume.
Throughout the show, we will hear more music from RIPLEY as well as from other shows with music by Jeff Russo including FARGO, LEGION, STAR TREK: DISCOVERY and STAR TREK: PICARD.
Enjoy!

The best podcast too keep up-to-date with the world of film scoring. Eric Woods does an excellent job with the Flagship Show to showcase the very best of what is coming out (with often generous selections). The other shows provide nice nose-dives in to specific sub-genres. Kudos in particular to Jason Drury for his interviews and to Ley Bricknell, whose voice I love.
