In honor of National Game Show Day, we are joined by the Cinemavention intro voice Jamey Lewis, host of The BVJ Show to talk about the movie Quiz Show. This film is a dramatization of the real life story of the rigging of the game show Twenty One, but did they get all the details right? Plus, we answer the question of why game shows are so popular in America and Jamey and Willie talk about their favorite game shows that they would put on their tier list.0201: Twenty One and the 1950s Quiz Show Scandals - World's Greatest Con | AcastWatch The Game Show Show TV Show - ABC.comWatch The Game Show Show Streaming Online | HuluJamey's Links:Season 1 Teaser Trailer | Peculiar Radio, A New Audio Fiction Series - Cast Compilation - YouTubePeculiar Radio, A New Audio Fiction Series | IndiegogoThe BVJ Show@FunZoneRadio TwitterSupport the show on Patreon!Join the watch party for the next movie!Music from https://filmmusic.io"Welcome to the Show" by Kevin MacLeod (https://incompetech.com)License: CC BY (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/) Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. Producer's note: At times, there might be discussion and potential spoilers of other Marvel movies in this episode.Avengers assemble! We've made it, it's time to watch Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 in theaters, but before we do, we've got some unfinished Avengers business to take care of. Naaim Siddiqi from the Rain Delay Radio podcast is back to cover part 2 of the Infinity War story, the 3 hour masterpiece, Avengers: Endgame. This movie is set in 2023 despite being released in 2019, notably before COVID ravaged the planet in real life. With the post-COVID hindsight in mind, it puts this movie in a new perspective and we compare real life trauma of 9/11 and COVID to the "snap." Did COVID accidentally fix the Marvel timeline? Plus, Naaim has a theater manager story where an employee got fired as a result of an early screening of this film and is the final battle scene with all the women heroes just a tone deaf pandering spectacle?Naaim's Links:Rain Delay RadioTwitterTikTokSupport the show on Patreon!Join the watch party for the next movie!Music from https://filmmusic.io"Welcome to the Show" by Kevin MacLeod (https://incompetech.com)License: CC BY (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/) Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. Producer's note: At times, there might be discussion and potential spoilers of other Marvel movies in this episode.Kick names, take ass. As we get ready for Guardians 3, we have now reached the final movies of Phase Three, arguably the most important MCU movies. We begin with Avengers: Infinity War and we are joined by Naaim Siddiqi from the Rain Delay Radio podcast. Naaim explains to us why this is his favorite Avengers movie because of how it can tell a bunch of different stories and still keep everything concise. Plus, is the whole ending of this movie Star Lord's fault and do we have Thanos all wrong, is he actually the protagonist of this movie?Naaim's Links:Rain Delay RadioTwitterTikTokSupport the show on Patreon!Join the watch party for the next movie!Music from https://filmmusic.io"Welcome to the Show" by Kevin MacLeod (https://incompetech.com)License: CC BY (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/) Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. Kent Fellure from the Ritual Misery podcast joins us as we continue our Guardians 3 Marvel watch-through and this time we're covering a Thor movie, specifically Thor: Ragnarok. This movie showcases Loki in a very different light than The Avengers and we've come up with the term "anti-villain" to describe him, we'll explain. Plus, Kent talks about this movie's similar Guardians humor and why these MCU movies break down a long standing trope of "serious" comic book movies and why that's a good thing and despite Asgard being destroyed in the end, as a viewer it seems like there's no emotional connection or attachment to it being destroyed, but why is that?Kent's Links:DCStreamathon.orgSupport the show on Patreon!Join the watch party for the next movie!Music from https://filmmusic.io"Welcome to the Show" by Kevin MacLeod (https://incompetech.com)License: CC BY (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/) Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. Producer's note: At times, there might be discussion and potential spoilers of other Marvel movies in this episode. So, you like cats. Our Marvel journey to fulfill our quest to watch Guardians 3 in theaters continues with Jeffrey Sax joining us to discuss the movie Avengers: Civil– oh sorry, Captain America: Civil War. While there might be a story reason for why this movie is a Captain America movie, it turns out that there were a lot of internal politics between different movie studios that led to this being a Captain America movie, and it requires us to go over the complete history of Marvel to fully understand it all. Plus, Willie makes the case for why this movie should be retroactively renamed to Avengers: Civil War and is this the first big fight scene in a movie that actually makes the movie pace slower?Jeffrey's Links:InstagramTwitterSupport the show on Patreon!Join the watch party for the next movie!Music from https://filmmusic.io"Welcome to the Show" by Kevin MacLeod (https://incompetech.com)License: CC BY (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/) Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. To get ready for the theatrical release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, we are going back and watching some important Marvel movies. Our first one is Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Tom DiGianvittorio joins us to reminisce about the glory days of being able to watch an MCU movie standalone and not have to worry about context. Plus, there was a Marvel TV series about the S.H.I.E.L.D organization in progress during this movie's release and Willie theorizes how this movie might've disrupted that entire series and we discuss a potential flaw in Captain America's fighting strategy.Tom's LinksTwitterSupport the show on Patreon!Join the watch party for the next movie!Music from https://filmmusic.io"Welcome to the Show" by Kevin MacLeod (https://incompetech.com)License: CC BY (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/) Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. It's Star Wars Day and we are joined by Kent Fellure from the Ritual Misery podcast to continue our Star Wars series of episodes. This time, we'll be discussing the 2nd movie released, Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back. While this movie appears on the surface to just be a Luke Skywalker training session, could it just be more of a reinforcement to make sure Luke doesn't join the Dark Side? Plus, this Star Wars movie along with the others in the trilogy have edits that were made after the movie's release, a total of 4 to be exact. Some Star Wars purists believe that the movies shouldn't have been tampered with, but we discuss why these changes may actually have been necessary, and the big reveal at the end of this movie is the biggest spoiler of all time, does it ruin the viewing experience for a first time watcher? The Empire Strikes Back: All of the Changes George Lucas Made to the FilmKent's Links:DCStreamathon.orgSupport the show on Patreon!Join the watch party for the next movie!Music from https://filmmusic.io"Welcome to the Show" by Kevin MacLeod (https://incompetech.com)License: CC BY (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/) Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. Episode 69: Deadpool

2023-02-1401:08:14

I'm living to 102 and then I'm dying like the city of Detroit. This year's Valentine's Day movie is Deadpool and we are joined by regular Game Night contributor Dolan Moles to discuss it. Deadpool is a very unique superhero, err, antihero movie that has so many 4th wall breaks and self aware moments. The story also jumps forward and backward a lot, but Willie explains why this wasn't a problem for this particular movie for him. Plus, we look back at the Deadpool x Fortnite collaboration and realize that it's pretty crazy they added Deadpool to a kid's game and why does Wade trust Francis who seems to be selling an obvious con to cure his disease? The meme referenced in the episodeDolan's Links:InstagramTwitchSupport the show on Patreon!Join the watch party for the next movie!Music from https://filmmusic.io"Welcome to the Show" by Kevin MacLeod (https://incompetech.com)License: CC BY (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/) Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. Ice cream! Regular Game Night contributor Brian Kofford joins us to talk about the film Close Encounters of the Third Kind and the fact that this movie arguably doesn't have a plot at all and Willie compares it to 2001: A Space Odyssey. Does that make the movie age poorly as a result? Plus, at first it may seem that the whistler guy who says he's seen Bigfoot during the Air Force press conference is a complete non sequitur but we realize that he may have single-handedly made the entire last half of the movie possible, we'll explain why and first time watchers might've missed the reason how Roy gets sunburned on only half of his face. Episode 67: The Matrix

2023-02-1301:30:42

Buckle your seatbelt, Dorothy, 'cause Kansas is going bye-bye. This week we are talking about the movie The Matrix with the founder of Scynewave Engineering Ki Scyne. What exactly is The Matrix? We see it in the movie, but does Willie actually understand what it is? Scyne helps us try to understand it using lucid dreaming and live concerts in Fortnite as examples of what The Matrix is like. Plus, Scyne got to be a character in The Matrix Online game that the directors of the movie say is technically cannon in the Matrix universe and is Neo and Trinity's kiss at the end just a fairytale-like ending or does it mean more about The Matrix than that? Dodge this!Ki's Links:Scyne.comSignalTwitchTwitterSupport the show on Patreon!Join the watch party for the next movie!Music from https://filmmusic.io"Welcome to the Show" by Kevin MacLeod (https://incompetech.com)License: CC BY (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/) Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. I will live in Montana. And I will marry a round American woman and raise rabbits, and she will cook them for me. And I will have a pickup truck... maybe even a "recreational vehicle." And drive from state to state. Do they let you do that? We are joined by regular Game Night contributor Jeffrey Sax to discuss the movie The Hunt for Red October. What happens when you know so much about submarines that you unknowingly figure out information about them that is classified? That's the exact scenario that Tom Clancy found himself in when he released the original novel that this movie is based on. We speculate what would happen if he hypothetically accidentally leaked classified information as a result of writing this story. Plus, an actor in this movie has had quite the career including being elected as a real life senator and then later starring in Law and Order and does Ramius have a reason for defecting from the Soviet Union, and is it a sound one?Jeffrey's Links:InstagramTwitterSupport the show on Patreon!Join the watch party for the next movie!Music from https://filmmusic.io"Welcome to the Show" by Kevin MacLeod (https://incompetech.com)License: CC BY (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/) Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. I'm going after that truck. How? I don't know, I'm making this up as I go! Tom DiGianvittorio joins us to discuss the film Raiders of the Lost Ark the first Indiana Jones movie in the franchise. There is a hilarious scene where Indiana Jones is about to fight this swordsman and shoots one pistol shot that ends the fight pretty fast. That scene was filmed that way on purpose and the reason why is a lot less funnier. Plus, the tone shift in Indiana Jones and Marion's conversation leaves a lot of details out and Willie explains why this frustrates him as a first time viewer and why do the Nazis exactly want the Ark of the Covenant? Is it just for power or is there another sinister reason they want it.Indiana Jones stunt show death scene - YouTubeTom's Links:TwitterSupport the show on Patreon!Join the watch party for the next movie!Music from https://filmmusic.io"Welcome to the Show" by Kevin MacLeod (https://incompetech.com)License: CC BY (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/) Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. Episode 64: Demolition Man

2023-02-0901:04:32

We're police officers! We're not trained to handle this kind of violence! A first time guest has joined us, Bob Callahan is here to talk about the movie Demolition Man and how this futuristic looking town looks like the perfect utopia at first, but very quickly you find out that it's quite the opposite in fact. That's just San Angeles, but what about the other states in the US in this universe, are they living the same dystopia that San Angeles is? Plus, we go over the weird relationship that Dr. Raymond Cocteau and Simon Phoenix have in this movie and what Dr. Raymond's intensions truly are with the cryogenic prison device, why some people are evil and some are good while they're frozen and since this movie is set in 2032, we get to go over what the movie has gotten right about the future so far and the ones they "accidentally" got right as a result of the pandemic. Did this movie predict 2032 better than they predicted 1996?Bob's Links:TwitterSupport the show on Patreon!Join the watch party for the next movie!Music from https://filmmusic.io"Welcome to the Show" by Kevin MacLeod (https://incompetech.com)License: CC BY (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/) Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. Ted, you know, if I die, you can have my Megadeth collection. But dude, we are already dead. We are joined by regular Game Night contributor Brian Kofford to discuss the sequel movie Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey and he has an interesting observation about the famous air guitar riff that Bill and Ted constantly perform. De Nomolos was annoyed by the sound of it but presumably only Bill and Ted can hear it. We go over a small detail in the movie that could explain why he can. Plus, we have a sad update on a very famous location shown in the Bill and Ted franchise that has closed its doors and this film is not a time travel movie but rather a defeating mortality story, does that hinder the movie experience? The Most Notorious TV Hijack of All Time - YouTube‘Bill and Ted’-Famous Circle K to Screen Film Before Shutting Down – The Hollywood ReporterBrian's Links:TwitchSupport the show on Patreon!Join the watch party for the next movie!Music from https://filmmusic.io"Welcome to the Show" by Kevin MacLeod (https://incompetech.com)License: CC BY (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/) Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. It's so dumb. Oh, it's so dumb, it's brilliant! No! It's just dumb! Samuel Lewis of The Samcast Network joins us to talk about the movie Glass Onion and the fact that there are so many layers (no pun intended), smoke screens and diversion tactics that make this mystery just as fun as the last one and we go over all the things you might've missed if you only watched the movie once. Plus, everyone seems to think that Detective Blanc is gay. Sam doesn't think so and provides some alternate context clues from the movie that contradict that thinking and Glass Onion doesn't really have the same "happy ending" closure that Knives Out does, but does that make it a better story? Episode 61: Children of Men

2023-01-3001:21:03

Can I shoot? I got a clean shot. *thud* F**k off. We are discussing the movie Children of Men this week with Brandt Hughes from the YouTube channel Emergent Beacon. Brandt brings up a quote from a previous episode of this show where Willie says he doesn't like ambiguity in movies, and Brandt challenges Willie's thinking that perhaps there's specific ambiguity that Willie doesn't like. Plus, the cinematography of this movie is exquisite and Brandt talks about the long continuous shots that are in this movie and how they pull it off and why does Theo not take advantage of Jasper's diversion tactic against The Fishes?Brandt's Links:Emergent BeaconcohostDiscordTwitchSupport the show on Patreon!Join the watch party for the next movie!Music from https://filmmusic.io"Welcome to the Show" by Kevin MacLeod (https://incompetech.com)License: CC BY (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/) Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. Yes, I got a penis. We are joined once again by regular Game Night contributor Dolan Moles to discuss the second film in the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise. Is it better than the first Guardians film or does it fall victim to the sequel curse. Willie also makes the argument for why this Guardians movie hinges entirely on Rocket stealing the batteries and why that one story plot makes him frustrated as a viewer. Plus, we make our Vol. 3 predictions but unfortunately Willie’s going to have to revisit them after seeing other MCU movies first and why didn’t a single person see this random blue plant planted in the ground for 34 years?!?Dolan's Links:TwitterInstagramTwitchSupport the show on Patreon!Join the watch party for the next movie!Music from https://filmmusic.io"Welcome to the Show" by Kevin MacLeod (https://incompetech.com)License: CC BY (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/) Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. Now, why would you call his mother a garden tool? Curtis Laraque joins us this week to talk about House Party and how this movie perfectly captures what life was like post 80s into the early 90s, and a lot of things have changed. Unfortunately, there are some things that haven't, including many instances of police brutality that are featured in this film. Plus, Kid's dad has a great dynamic with his son and we go over how amazing their relationship is and we present the case for why the last 20 minutes of the movie are not only not necessary but just felt like an opportunity to stretch the movie duration.Curtis's Links:TwitterSupport the show on Patreon!Join the watch party for the next movie!Music from https://filmmusic.io"Welcome to the Show" by Kevin MacLeod (https://incompetech.com)License: CC BY (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/) Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. Does this hinder the watch for a first time viewer? Plus, all the aliens are named John including the females, we discuss why that detail wasn't important for the movie's storytelling but also could've indicated how ahead of it's time it was when it came to gender identity and does the license plate on the test vehicle mean it was the 88th test run or is there a hidden music reference instead?Kevin's Links:Going Through WhoTwitterSupport the show on Patreon!Join the watch party for the next movie!Music from https://filmmusic.io"Welcome to the Show" by Kevin MacLeod (https://incompetech.com)License: CC BY (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/) Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. Bright light! Bright light! The holiday season has drawn to a close this year and we have one last holiday movie we're going to talk about with Kent Fellure from the Ritual Misery podcast, and the movie is Gremlins. While this story may be a very simple story to follow, we explain why it's still a fantastic story and why sometimes the best movies are often the simple ones. Plus, find out the one scene in this movie that completely messes with the flow of the story, seems out of place and leaves both of us scratching our heads on why it's included and there seems to be a very glaring plot hole in one of the Mogwai rules, when can the Mogwai eat again after midnight has passed?Donate to Extra Life!Kent's Links:DCStreamathon.orgRitual MiseryTwitterSupport the show on Patreon!Join the watch party for the next movie!Music from https://filmmusic.io"Welcome to the Show" by Kevin MacLeod (https://incompetech.com)License: CC BY (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/) Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. Our holiday movie watching season rolls on and the creator of the modern version of Showbot.tv, Preston Monroe is here to talk about the movie The Santa Clause. We go over the intricacies of this movie's portrayal of Santa Claus and how this movie walks the line very well between portraying Santa Claus as real and Charlie having doubt about Santa's existence. Plus, Preston's office Christmas parties aren't as crazy as a butt on a copy machine but he's had some with very drunk coworkers and Santa falls off the roof of a house so easily and doesn't even have a fire proof suit, what are the elf researchers in the Santa Clause universe supposed to be doing exactly?Google Clock bug causing many users to miss alarms has been fixedPreston's Links:Showbot.tvBiocow.comTwitterSupport the show on Patreon!Join the watch party for the next movie!Music from https://filmmusic.io"Welcome to the Show" by Kevin MacLeod (https://incompetech.com)License: CC BY (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/) Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. Keep the change, ya filthy animal. It's the month of December which means it's time to cover holiday movies here on Cinemavention and we begin with the film Home Alone and Samuel Lewis of The Samcast Network is here to talk about it. This movie has arguably stood the test of time and is the most successful Christmas movie in the box office. It would take 21 years for this movie to be dethroned as the highest grossing live-action comedy film, not just Christmas live-action comedy films. Why is this movie so timeless? Regular Game Night contributor Brian Kofford is here to help us celebrate the midterm elections here in the US by talking about the movie Idiocracy and how it serves as a cautionary tale for the state of our country's current politics but it didn't use to be that way, how exactly did we get this divisive in the US? First dead body I've ever seen. Look different in real life. They don't move. Samuel Lewis of The Samcast Network is here and he's never seen the movie Saw before but there's a good reason why, he's representing a movie watcher who doesn't usually like watching horror films and it's Willie's job to convince him to watch it. This movie was a controversial pick to discuss on Cinemavention and we will be spoiling this movie like we always do, but it's highly encouraged for you to listen to this episode even if you haven't seen the movie and especially if you're hesitant to watch it. Willie breaks down the entire movie for Sam and we discuss whether the trailer is an accurate portrayal of this movie. Episode 27: Iron Man (2008)

2022-06-0601:10:10

What am I supposed to tell the press? Training exercise. Isn't that the usual BS? It's the start of Marvel Month on Cinemavention, and to kick things off, we are joined by Jeffrey Sax and Tom DiGianvittorio to discuss the movie Iron Man. Spoiler alert on Willie's opinion about the movie since he forgot to mention it during the episode, he gave the movie a thumbs up, but could the MCU as we know it existed without Iron Man doing well in the box office? Plus, these terrorists at first glance seem to be really dumb for not killing Tony Stark, but we explain why it's not in their best interest to do so and who remembers MySpace? Ahh, the good 'ole days of social media.Differences Between the Movie and the Comics:Thanks to MaxTrollbot in the Cinemavention Discord for providing this insight!- Tony Stark is head of Stane International which takes over Stark industries with the secret help of SHIELD and drives Tony into becoming a homeless alcoholic while Rhodes has to fight Stane..- But the way they do it in the movie is soo much simpler, even though it never really addresses how Tony manages to get back control of Stark Industries. I mean, you don't get to be the CEO again just because you killed the guy who took the job from you. And it's doubtful that the board would be eager to reinstate Tony since he still doesn't want to make weapons.- Also, Stane's minions are called Chessmen for some reason.- In the comics he's a strategist, the closest allusion in the movie to his chess obsession is when he asks Pepper for the paper so he can do the puzzle.- He really was a minor, third-tier villain even by Iron Man standards.Kent's full email about Forrest GumpJeff's TwitterTom's TwitterSupport the show on Patreon!Join the watch party for the next movie!Music from https://filmmusic.io"Welcome to the Show" by Kevin MacLeod (https://incompetech.com)License: CC BY (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/) Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast.
