I caught a couple of posts from Alan Stein, Jr. (@AlanSteinJr) that got me reflecting on a couple of things.  The two posts were:  “Define your own success” and “A key to inner peace is figuring out what you truly value and disregarding everything else.”  Both of these are connected since we have the control over our own success (and what that definition is) along with what we really value in life.  So much of the world wants to define these for us and then make us feel horrible when we don’t do that.  Lot’s of reminders for me recently that both of these are up to me.  For you, they are up to you - not the world.  Thanks for listening.  Please take a few moments to subscribe & share this with someone, also leave a 5 Star rating on Apple Podcasts and ITunes or other services where you find this show.  Find me on Facebook:  https://www.facebook.com/coachtoexpectsuccess/   on Twitter / “X”:  @coachtosuccess   and on Instagram at:  @coachjohndaly  - My YouTube Channel is at: Coach John Daly.   Email me at: CoachJohnDalyPodcast@gmail.com     You can also head on over to https://www.coachtoexpectsuccess.com/ and get in touch with me there on my homepage along with checking out my Top Book list too.  Other things there on my site are being worked on too.  Please let me know that you are reaching out to me from my podcast.
Reading my daily dose of John Maxwell and from a couple of days ago this message was one that I had to share with you.  It’s all about the reminder that growth is a choice for all of us.  The big thing is that change happens all the time, every day, whether we like it or not and whether we want it to or not.  Everyone has to deal with it.  Now growth, there is something that we all have a choice about.  It’s totally optional.  It’s totally up to us to choose to look to grow and get better.  It’s something that we can do little things every day that will add up to some major things later in life.  The choice is clear for me.  How about for you?
I did a little bit deeper reflecting on what "The Daily Coach" is all about and this caught more of my attention to share with you.  “The most important person you’ll ever coach is yourself.  The goal of #TheDailyCoach is to provide a daily hands-on approach to becoming a better leader.   Whether you’re an executive, teacher, or parent... EVERYONE is a coach.”  This is total truth.  We do indeed “coach” ourselves for sure.  The more we can connect to things in our life that mean something to us, the more we can encourage ourselves to keep investing in ourselves to be our best!!  That will add so much value to our lives along with the lives of everyone we are connected with.  BIG shoutout to Coach Dave Ruekert for a phone call to me this morning to help inspire my day and this episode.   Find more out about The Daily Coach - HERE.
A much needed reminder for a "Mindset Monday" - a quick hitting 5 points to take with us any day, but especially a Monday!  Great to have in our back pocket all the time.  Nobody better than Jon Gordon (@jongordon11) to bring us some awesome #MindsetMonday reminders.
"The Daily Coach" is someone that I've followed for a number of years now and it seems the information shared on this platform is only getting better.  Find today's post HERE.  Keep checking back at this site and where you follow social media (@TheDaily_Coach). Today it's a great reminder using some "heros" from my childhood - Batman & Robin to teach us that we all need to have villains in our lives in order to grow and become better.
Saw a powerful post and a reminder, exactly when I needed to see it this morning - from Greg Berge - all about the importance of gratitude.  “Why is having GRATITUDE so important?  - Gratitude kills worry. - Gratitude destroys fear. - Gratitude reduces stress. - Gratitude makes you happier. - Gratitude makes you healthier. - Gratitude builds your resilience. - Gratitude changes your state of mind.  Be Grateful.”  I woke up this morning in pain as usual (darn arthritis) and I started going down the rabbit hole of feeling down about myself.  Well, I knew I had to get my steps in this morning with my coffee and I got to thinking about things.  How I can’t stay in this dark “room” to start my day off.  I started to go down a long list of reasons why I need to be my best (my entire family, my career as an educator & coach, the people in my life, etc.).  I started to feel a bit better.  Then I saw this post & it really kicked into high gear for me.  I need to set up these “triggers” to remind me every day as to what direction I get to choose for how my day will go.  It’s something that I think we all need.  I hope this helps you to have a great day and to get through whatever you need to get through and become better.
Finishing up the look down the trail of some fantastic and powerful lessons from Coach Pat Summitt, shared through Coach AJ - part 4 of 4 is:  Be Courageous and Accept The Cost of Action - To face your fears, you need to accept your environment and have the courage to push through. Accept that there are different outcomes that may happen, but one result doesn't define you. Focus on the price of not taking action and think about what it would be like not to try. Understanding the cost of not trying empowers you to confront your fears, take calculated risks, and move closer to your goals.
Continuing down the trail of some fantastic and powerful lessons from Coach Pat Summitt, shared through Coach AJ - part 3 of 4 is:  Run Through The Worst Case Scenarios - Run through what would happen if you do "fail". This allows you to face your fears head-on. List and those fears and the potential obstacles that may be hold you back. Think  through the worst-case scenario and plan the steps to mitigate it. This process allows you to put your fears under a microscope and consider the potential benefits of taking action.  I was always more of this type of coach for basketball - always trying to plan ahead a bit as to what we needed to avoid in playing another team.  But, I didn’t spend a ton of time on it as I was more of an encouraging, positive, fired up type of coach for my players.   If we do take a peek at this in our lives - we can prepare a bit for those moments.  We can also know what not to do to have these worse case scenarios happen to us from our own choices.  Powerful stuff here from coaches that deal with the mental side of the game and of life.
Continuing down the trail of some fantastic and powerful lessons from Coach Pat Summitt, shared through Coach AJ - part 2 of 4 is:  Embrace a Growth Mindset!   A growth mindset starts with the belief that your abilities and intelligence can be developed through hard work, dedication, and perseverance. "Failure" is not the end but an opportunity for learning and growth. I have been hearing this more and more lately - which simply means that I have not learned the lesson & applied it in my life.  Lesson repeated until lesson learned.  Coach Summitt reminds us to view it as a step towards success rather than a permanent setback. Growth only happens when you learn from your mistakes and make it a habit.  Again, realizing that failure / setbacks / tough times / roadblocks, etc., happens to ALL OF US throughout life - we all have endless opportunities to grow and get better every single day!!
I love these thoughts that Coach AJ shared from Coach Pat Summitt.  This is part 1 of 4 with this thought from Coach Summitt:  "Reframe Failure as Feedback - Failure isn’t a sign of weakness, it’s a sign of bravery. True growth only happens when you learn from your mistakes. Take time to sit back and reframe your thoughts, language, and perception around challenges or “failures” that have happened to yourself or others. Embrace those challenges."  Since all of us deal with failure in life, remember that every human being deals with this, we might as well figure out how to learn from it since it will be a never-ending set of lessons through life.
I found a great post dealing with something that Coach Pat Summitt said, "We keep score in life because it matters. It counts. It matters. Too many people opt out and never discover their own abilities because they fear failure."  There are many things in life to not worry about keeping score - then there are a few for sure that we do want to keep score on for sure.  This is kicking off a short 4 part series on getting past our fear of failure.  Those 4 parts are coming in the next 4 episodes.
Coach AJ comes through again with sharing a post that comes from Coach Jay Wright who goes through a list of 7 ways to get rid of a negative attitude.   Since life keeps throwing things at us - every day - we might as well have a few things to deal with looking to be more positive.
Another fabulous lesson shared from the Positivity Project - and this is something for all of us to take to heart.  "If you lose your wealth, you have lost nothing, if you lose your health, you have lost something; but if you lose your character, you have lost everything." -Woodrow Wilson #PositivitylnAction   Thanks for listening.
I found another great quote from Coach Ray Ostrowski - he puts out his Daily Quotes for his students and players, but also for anyone who takes a few moments to read what he posts.  Here are some of his thoughts - "Stick with it. Quitting is the only way to ensure failure. Persistence pays off - especially when you work your way to the top with consistency, work ethic, & a positive attitude."  This is a great reminder for me and hopefully for you too.  I need more reminders like this and then I need to implement these thoughts into my life more for sure.
Red Letter Days is what Mitch Albom was talking about in his recent "Tuesday People" podcast - find it HERE.  There are always special days in our lives and those that can be called those Red Letter Days - marking them in a calendar in red.  Much of the world was caught up in a very special Solar Eclipse day on April 8, 2024.  Mitch brings up the example that many of our regular, ordinary days can be those too.  Time with loved ones.  Having our health.  Being able to do simple things.  The list of grateful things goes on and on.  I know that I want to view my regular days as being really special.  I hope we all can do more of that.
I am really finding so much value with the fact that I am still learning things from former students.  In fact, I hope I don't ever stop seeing the tremendous value in learning from them and others - every day of my life!  Coach Ray Ostrowski comes through again with one of his Daily Quotes.   Leaders teach others to "sweep the sheds". Nothing is ‘below me’. Nothing is too small or too unimportant.  If more people took this mindset to heart, our world would be a lot better place.  As I get older, that is becoming one of my life goals - to leave the world a better place because I was here.  Everyone that has ever invested in me - there are 10's of thousands that have done this - that helps each of them to live on in some way, by me looking to do better because of them.
Found a very thought-provoking post from The Positivity Project.  This quote - "When we begin to take our failures non-seriously, it means we are ceasing to be afraid of them. It is of immense importance to learn to laugh at ourselves." - Katherine Mansfield.   This helped me to look at myself a bit more with some laughs and some more confidence.  When I mess up - which is a lot- I'm still learning to learn from those moments. Not to stay in the self-misery of messing up.  Here is the biggie - to quit being afraid of those moments and making myself feel worse.  When I beat myself up, I hold myself back from doing great things.  This was a very good reminder for me and I hope for you too.
A recent video clip that I found from an interview done with Paige Bueckers from the UConn women's' basketball team, got me thinking about a lot of things that I needed to hear about.  She's been through some tough times with injuries.  All of us have tough times throughout life.  Her advice that I connected with, simply put, I needed to hear it.  I hope you can also find something from listening to her response to this question posed to her.  Find it HERE.  So much to learn from young people.  I am amazed and full of gratitude that I know this.  I hope you do too.
I found a great email post from "The Daily Coach" and it was centered around The Modest Roots of the Final Four Coaches and that there are talented people working at all levels who just need the right opportunity. This is not just about basketball coaching - but just about every walkway in life.  This is part 3 of 3 where I bring up some connections from the grunt work of today that can serve us long term.  That we all have done work that maybe would not be considered great or that nobody saw us doing “in the light”, but that same tough work helped to form who we are today.  We need to remind ourselves that the same goes for others too.
