On this episode of Cold Call, 2018 St. Thomas Law graduate Molly Hough talks to us about her experience as a recent law school grad. Molly is a practicing attorney who joined us on the podcast to talk about life as a new associate at a mid-sized law firm. Additionally, Molly recently passed the Minnesota bar exam and so we discuss the challenges and struggles of taking the exam.
During this episode of Cold Call we talk to Robby Dube, a 3L from the University of Minnesota Law School. We discuss his clerkship on the Hawaii State Supreme Court. Were we jealous that Robby will get to spend a year in Hawaii clerking for their Supreme Court? Of course we were!
Fear Factor - Law School Edition! The co-host must answer a current events trivia question; wrong answers and they must grab a jelly bean out of the bag of "Bean Boozled". Half the jelly beans in the bag taste like regular jelly beans and the other half taste disgusting.
It's Endgame for the co-hosts as the semester starts to wind-down. On this episode, we talked about what we learned, specifically what we learned about ourselves, this year and the challenges with seeking employment in a competitive industry. We also discussed our favorite TV/movie lawyers because we all joined law school based on what we saw on the television, right?
During this episode, we talk about the highs and lows of our first year in law school. Law School can be challenging and we go through our mental status at the end of the year.
Sarah Koziol and Cristina Cruz join the podcast as guest co-hosts. Sarah, who went to art school and is a self-described podcast snob. She critiques the podcast to hopefully (but don't count on it) make the podcast better! Al Otro Lado is a bi-national, direct legal services organization serving indigent deportees, migrants, and refugees in Tijuana, Mexico. Sarah Koziol traveled to Tijuana during spring break to work with migrants and refugees looking to enter the United States. We also talk to Sarah about her background in art, her work as a paralegal, and we also debate the importance of echo chambers.
On Part 2 of TORT, we continue our conversation with Ellen and Jacob on the law school musical production of "A Tale as Old a Time". This musical parody will be playing March 29th and 30th at the Pantages Theatre in downtown Minneapolis, performance begins at 7:00 pm. During this episode we also cold call Ellen and Jacob by asking them challenging judicial trivia questions. Wrong answers are punished by having them answer shameful personal questions. What was Ellen's worst date? What was Jacob's most embarrassing moment? Listen and find out...
On March 29th and 30th TORT (Theater of the Relatively Talentless) will be performing their musical parody "Tale as Old as Times" at the Pantages Theatre in downtown Minneapolis. Ellen and Jacob from TORT join the podcast to talk about their time at the University of Minnesota Law School, what areas of law they're interested in, and what being on a Journal is really like.
We talk to Nick about his background in construction, working and growing up in Tennessee, and moving to Minnesota. We talk about how he determined with his partner to go to the University of Minnesota and what classes we like in law school.
Sua Sponte, the law school improv group, joins the show to perform some improv. We talk to the Colleen and Nicolette about improv comedy and how their improv group helped them through law school. This weekend she'll be a speaker at the MNxMN 2019: Beyond the Vote conference held in St. Paul this Sunday, February 24th. We talk to Helene about her role with the NLG and how we can become more civically engaged.
Anthony had a birthday last week so we played Plead the Fifth with him. We asked him three very personal questions, he could only "Plead the Fifth" to one of them... His answers may surprise you. We also discuss the State of the Union and possibly another Government shutdown.
Study abroad in law school? We talk to Kate Averwater about her experience studying law in Germany. We learn about the great opportunities there are to study abroad and what it's like as a law student in a foreign country. We also learn about how one of our co-hosts almost got stabbed while studying and how later that next day they needed to have their appendix removed.
In the season 2 premiere, we talk to Robert Vischer the Dean of the University of St. Thomas School of Law. We discuss Dean Vischer's career in private practice and his move to becoming a law professor. We also discuss current and future issues within the legal profession. Dean Vischer is an advocate of the Socratic method, so we cold call the Dean by asking him judicial trivia. Incorrect answers result in Dean Vischer answering an embarrassing question.
During our final episode of 2018 we talk to Navin, an international law student from Southern India. We discuss Navin's background, the challenges of being an international student, and the oddities of the U.S. justice system. To wrap up the season we play co-host trivia where we see how much the co-hosts have learned about each other. Spoiler… apparently not much. Plus, a special thanks to everyone who has appeared on our show.
