However, his life took an unexpected turn in 2018 when he suffered a traumatic spinal injury that left him without the use of his legs and feet.But Fergus refused to let this define him. With unwavering determination, he underwent surgery and embarked on a journey of recovery that would defy all odds. Through sheer willpower and the support of his loved ones, Fergus regained movement in his toes and went on to accomplish something truly extraordinary.In a remarkable display of strength, Fergus completed a 206-kilometer walk from his injury site in Athenry, Galway, to the National Rehabilitation Hospital in Dún Laoghaire. This incredible feat not only symbolized his personal triumph but also raised €70,000 for the hospital that played a crucial role in his recovery.He serves as an ambassador for Darkness into light Athenry, raising awareness of mental health challenges associated with life-changing injuries.In recent times Fergus is also known for his rowing endeavors. He was medically evacuated from a rowing vessel called Cushlamachree in the Atlantic Ocean. The Singapore flagged tanker, Hafnia Shenzhen, responded to a request for assistance from the US Coast Guard and brought Fergus on board. He had to leave his rowing partner, Damian Browne, behind due to a suspected blood clot. Fergus's rowing journey aimed to set a new Guinness world record in their purpose-built Seasabre 6.2m craft, from New York to Galway.Fergus's journey is a shining example of the resilience of the human spirit and a reminder that there are no limits to what one can achieve when faced with adversity.
