Jesus claimed to be the Light of the World. This is a claim rich with OT imagery and stories. We look at how the felt presence of God's Kabod was gone for 1,000 years by the time Jesus came around and how we can often feel like his presence is gone but it isnt.
Jesus' claim to be the "bread of life" has a direct connection to the story of God providing manna in the wilderness during the Exodus. The people in John's account of this story recognized that and even brought it up. Today, we look more at that connection. How just like the manna, Jesus is our only option. But, he is a free gift and all we must do is accept him.
In this episode, we look at the Old Testament connection to Jesus claiming to be the "I Am" in John 8. There is so much rich history connected to this passage that we couldn't possibly talk about it all in one sermon, so we look into it here! Listen to the rest of the series where we look at how Jesus is the fulfillment of so many Old Testament stories!
In this final episode of praying the Psalms, we look at Psalm 84 which is all about a journey towards God's presence. We learn how we ourselves can travel on this journey towards God's presence.
In this episode Joey Mulcahey walks us through how to pray one of the darkest, most depressing psalm in the whole collection. It might not be the most fun or pleasant psalm to pray through, but it is essential. This psalm is a gift to the believer and may you see it as such.
Psalm 71 is largely a lament psalm. In it, the psalm-writer cries out to God for help, for protection and for God to do what only God can do. Nick Rombough teaches on how this psalm outlines lament and how we can look at a difficult psalm like this as a beneficial guide for our own prayer life.
Psalm 73 is an honest prayer from Asaph as he wrestles with doubts about God. This prayer is a valuable guide for us as we wrestle with out own doubts. We follow Asaph's three movements when dealing with doubt: Address/Confess Motives, Doubt our Doubts & Go to the Sanctuary in order to keep doubt from becoming an obstacle and instead making it an opportunity to grow in faith.
Psalm 42 is a guide for how we should prepare ourselves for worship. The Korahites (who wrote psalm 42) show us how to get to a worshipful posture. They do this with 3 steps, coming before God honestly, self-talk/instruction & Biblical praise. Our worship leader Matt walks us through this process.
Psalm 23 is famous and memorable, but it is not always foundational to our lives and it is not always reality for us. One of the main implications of this Psalm for us is that we "lack nothing." This is not always the way we live, so we need to pray into this. Asking God to keep us from acting like we have lack. The other key lesson from this Psalm is that God is with us (v.4) but often His presence feels far. So we pray into this asking God to make us more aware of His presence and more comforted by Him. These are simple things to pray, but difficult changes to make. It will take repetitive, consistent praying into Psalm 23 for us to allow God to make these changes in us. Lean into that
In this episode we use the longest Psalm (119) as a guide to pray for others. We do this by reading a section of the Psalm and then prayerfully inserting someone else's name in the place of me, my, I & so on, so that the focus of our prayer is on God's work in their life. This practice can be awkward at first, but with practice, it can become more natural.
In this episode, we discuss the fundimentals of how to pray the Psalms. How to pray the exact words of the Psalmist and how to let those words become our own words of prayer to God. Then we enter into practice of praying the Psalms. We look at Psalm 1 that we learned about on Sunday and we pray those words to God.
Most of chapter 11 is dense prophecy. The whole chapter is the recording of a vision Daniel received and the explanation. Job tackled this chapter and reminded us of God's purpose in giving us prophecy. In this podcast Job goes into a few parables Jesus taught that teach us how to approach and view prophecy as well as how to live in light of end times prophecy.
In Daniel chapter 10, the topic of spiritual warfare is unavoidable. We look at the reality of spiritual warfare and the "spiritual realm" as its taught in the Scriptures as well as the protection and victory we have in spiritual warfare.
In this episode, Nick, Bryan & myself discuss Old Testament prophecy & the 70 "sevens" of Daniel chapter 9. We do this from the road as we drive back to Rapid City from meeting with other Alliance pastors in Western Wyoming. We had fun with this episode. We hope you do too!
Daniel chapter 8 is another weird account of a strange prophetic dream. We talk about how we should approach Biblical prophecy & apocalypse, how the prophetic vision from Dan8 played out in history, and what the number "2300 evenings & mornings" ended up meaning, despite the calculations of Isaac Newton and others.
In Daniel chapter 7 things get weird. We acknowledge the difficult nature of apocalyptic literature & Bible prophecies, look at the accuracy of the Bible's descriptions of these empires long before they existed. And we see the significance of Jesus being the "Son of man coming on the clouds." How this speaks to his humanity & divinity in such a subtle way.
This week we look at Daniel chapter 6, the chapter in which we get the famous story of Daniel being thrown into the Lion's den. We consider the Biblical imagery of Lions, whether or not Christians can break the law and a story about Martyrs in the 4th century.
In Daniel chapter 5 we are introduced to King Belshazzar. We look at his route to becoming king and the writings that speak about him. We also look at repentance involving confession to one another and the value of knowing our sins through the practice of examen.
In chapter 4 we see Nebuchadnezzar's sad mental state and how rapidly it deteriorate. But, we see that wasn't the end of his story. This brings up how important the topic of mental health is and how we as Christ Followers can address it in ourselves and in others. How we should talk about it, de-stigmatize it, de-glamorize it and confront the darkness with light.
In this episode on Daniel chapter 3, we look at Nebuchadnezzer's attempt to avoid God's promise, how this chapter has formed Christian polticial ideologies over the centuries, a bit about Shadrach, Meshach & Abednego, and an inspiring example of non-participation in WW2.
