Apologies are never easy. It’s difficult to say sorry, and also, not easy to forgive. But when you seek forgiveness with sincerity, it makes the road easy for both the giver and the seeker.  Sometimes, the hardest thing about saying "I'm sorry" is finding the right words to do so. A successful apology validates that the other person felt offended, and acknowledges responsibility.    In the last episode, “How to apologize effectively- part I”,  I shared ‘must-haves’ of an effective apology, and also the best timing to give one.  In today’s episode, I’ll share some goof ups esp. by big brands & celebrities, who did it wrong Basically- to show you What not to do!   Today, we will also discuss boundaries when apologizing to someone and I’ll show you how to set those boundaries because many of us suffer because of lack of these boundaries And because of over-apologizing!   I love to help you polish up your communication skills and if there’s any important issue/ topic you want me to address, please email me at info@sarikasingh.in I regularly share tips, tricks, and strategies to better presentation, interview, writing, speaking, and all your communication skills on my insta so don’t forget to follow me on #communicate101.  Check out my website for trainings & workshops worldwide: https://communicate101.com  #sorry #apology # speak #saysorry #parenting #office #school #howto
Apologizing effectively is like navigating through a dense forest. Imagine you're on a path surrounded by thick foliage, where one wrong step could lead you astray. In the same way, a misstep in your apology can take you off course and create more harm than good. Mastering the art of a sincere apology involves knowing the right steps to take and the pitfalls to avoid. A genuine apology should acknowledge the hurt, take responsibility, and offer a way to make amends. This podcast episode is the first leg of this series and is followed by the second and last leg in the next episode. We’ll explore practical tips and techniques for apologizing effectively, establishing boundaries, and cover how to recognize the mistakes that lead to bad apologies. Whether it's a personal or professional apology, knowing how to apologize effectively can turn a difficult conversation into an opportunity for growth and understanding. Today, after some 25 years of coaching in communication skills, I've noticed a common thread. It's not that people are bad at communicating because they're inherently bad at it. It's about the disconnect between what they're saying and who they truly are. Get ready for a jam-packed episode of your favourite Communication Skills podcast!    If you like this podcast, subscribe and spread the good word by telling a friend. Are you COMMUNICATING?

Vandana- Sahil, a couple, is planning a vacation. Vandana, suggests going to the beach because she loves the sea. But instead of clearly expressing her preference, she simply mentions, "I don't know, anywhere is fine." Her partner Sahil, thinking she's genuinely indifferent, books a ski resort because he enjoys skiing. Vandana is disappointed, feels misunderstood, agrees reluctantly, but spends the trip discontented with the ‘he doesn’t care about me’ attitude. If Vandana expressed her desires clearly, they could both enjoy!   A team is working on a project with tight deadlines. John, a team member, is struggling with a particular task but is hesitant to ask for help. Why? Because then he’ll look incompetent. Right? You know, it's kind of interesting how just saying "hello" can give away whether someone's trustworthy or not. Like, most folks can pick up on it just from the tone of their voice. Imagine, you're browsing through training courses, eyeing one led by someone who seems to lack experience in the subject. Or maybe you're considering making a purchase from a salesperson who has let you down before. And then there's the leader who rarely keeps their word, expecting you to go the extra mile. Would you be all in for any of these scenarios? Probably not. Why? Because when you're investing your time, energy, or trust, you want assurance that it's worth it. That's where credibility comes into play. It's like the secret sauce that makes you think, "Yep, this is someone I can rely on." Credibility? It's like the cool stuff we talk about, the skills we flaunt, and those shiny credentials we've earned. Now, reliability? That's all about walking the talk, being as predictable as your morning coffee order. See, it's not just about what we say, but what we do that really seals the deal! What exactly is credibility? Why does it matter so much? And, most importantly, how do you make yourself trustworthy? Let's dive in and find out.  After 25 years of training folks in communication skills, I've noticed a common thread. It's not that people are bad at communicating because they're inherently bad at it. Nah. It's more about the disconnect between what they're saying and who they truly are. You know, by the time we reach middle age, life tends to throw us a few curveballs - losing loved ones, dealing with illness, going through divorces, or getting laid off from jobs. It's like a series of tough punches. But you know what's interesting? Even though we've been through some stuff ourselves, when someone we care about is going through a really tough time, we often struggle to find the right words to show our love and support. We end up feeling awkward or just defaulting to a generic "I'm so sorry." Veena had been eagerly awaiting the results of her job interview for weeks. When the email finally arrived, her heart raced as she clicked it open. But instead of the congratulatory message she had hoped for, it contained a polite rejection. Disappointment washed over her, and tears welled up in her eyes as she realized she hadn't gotten the job she so desperately wanted. Her roommate, Emily, noticed Veena's distress and immediately went to her side. She put an arm around Veena's shoulders and offered a comforting hug. "I'm so sorry, Veena," Emily said softly. "I know how much you wanted this. It's okay to feel upset. You're talented, and I'm sure another opportunity will come your way soon." Veena buried her face in Emily's shoulder, grateful for her friend's support. In that moment, all she needed was someone to be there for her, to offer a listening ear and a shoulder to lean on. With Emily's comforting presence, Veena knew she would be able to pick herself up and keep moving forward, despite the disappointment she was feeling. Are you always able to help your friends like Emily? Do you know how to console someone in need or do you just freeze, not knowing what to say or do. This episode trains you in what I call the COMMUNICATION TRIPOD- a master strategy to help console your loved ones, when they need you. When sitting with your loved ones, avoid getting distracted, as much as possible. Be there in body and spirit, and make sure to be yourself.
Having a tough chat might mean dealing with stuff you'd rather avoid, finding yourself at a loss for words, facing conflicting views, not knowing how things will turn out, or just feeling uneasy about the whole thing. So, when I'm helping folks through tough talks, we're usually gunning for one of three things: a solution, a plan, or just getting each other. A solution is like the big win, where everyone's happy, all problems are solved, and it's supposed to last forever. Sounds great, right? But sometimes, pushing for that perfect fix can actually make things worse by piling too much pressure on already strained relationships.  A plan, though, that's a bit more down-to-earth. It's like a roadmap to a solution. It keeps things flexible, gives us a way forward, and helps us redefine how we relate to each other with new rules and expectations. But honestly, especially in the beginning, the most realistic goal is just understanding each other. It's about really getting where the other person is coming from, understanding their feelings, fears, and dreams. Getting to that point can be a huge relief and set the stage for making a plan, finding a solution, and building a better relationship.  Let’s unplug these tough convos and learn how to navigate through them without difficulty! Now, after 25 years of training folks in communication skills, I've noticed a common thread. It's not that people are bad at communicating because they're inherently bad at it. Nah. Hey, ever feel like you're stumbling over your words? Turns out, it might not just be about what you're saying, but how you're holding yourself. But hey, there's more to it than just posture! Let me tell you a secret: the best off-the-cuff speakers? They're actually the ones who've done a bit of prep. They might not rehearse their whole speech, but they've got a few anecdotes up their sleeve for any occasion. So next time you're faced with a topic, think: got a story that fits? If yes, let it flow! But hey, let's remember one golden rule: Practice makes perfect. Never miss a chance to flex those communication muscles. So, what if you stumble today? "Ever been hit by those 'stolen spotlight' moments? They're like unwanted guests crashing your party. But hey, here's the scoop: interruptions aren't just a nuisance, they're a chance to shine. Yup, you heard it right! There are savvy ways to tackle them head-on and still ace your message. Whether you're chatting one-on-one or leading a group pow-wow, there are hacks to keep from being steamrolled. Here's the deal: when you're constantly cut off, keep on talking. How you handle those interruptions? That's your moment to shine, baby. It's what sets you apart and gives you that speaker swagger. And hey, interruptions aren't always bad news. They could be questions from your audience – a golden opportunity! Take it in your stride. Just like Bill Clinton did when his own phone rang during a speech. Talk about smooth operator! So, embrace the interruptions and show 'em who's boss." Now, after 25 years of training folks in communication skills, I've noticed a common thread. Do you struggle in making people agree with you Or listen to you? So, let's talk about positive communication, because that’s what you need! It's basically all about spreading good vibes, making sure everyone gets where the other person is coming from, and making sure everyone feels good about the convo. When you communicate positively, you're being constructive, supportive, and just generally bringing those good feels into the mix.   Now, when it comes to getting your point across at work, being assertive is where it's at. Hey, got a big presentation on the horizon? Feeling overwhelmed by all the content you have to cover? Worried about whether what you say will actually be valuable to your audience? I get it, starting can be tough when you're drowning in information and unsure where to begin. And I know, the clock is ticking, adding to the pressure. Top of it, you worry that you might end up rambling or waffling on! It's a common fear. Rambling occurs when you haven't prepared well or when your notes aren't helping you stay on track. It's like talking a lot without really saying anything substantial. Let's call it the "Waffle Trap" – speaking without a clear point or going on when you've already made your point. So, how do we avoid this trap and speak engagingly and in an impactful manner? Learn this, and a master strategy which works wonderfully well to control all that unwanted rambling! Someone rightly said, "The mind is a wonderful thing. It starts working the minute you're born and never stops working until you get up to speak in public." Do you think these stars were always stars? Do you think people always let up for them when they walked on the stage? Do you think the huge round of applause is that they hear today always existed? Nope! They used the STAR method! According to Nancy Duarte, a STAR moment should “dramatically drive the big idea home” Your audience should always leave your presentation with something they’ll always remember. Having said that, what does it actually take to create a memorable STAR moment? This episode is all about that, just with some add ons!
