Karl Mehta was on my show 'confessions of a futurist with Sanjiv Goyal'. We talked about the future of education and exponential learning.  Some interesting facts; the United States education market is close to $2 trillion, i.e., 10% of our GDP. We have female students outnumber males in higher studies.  Points we have addressed and/or raised;  1) Are we spending taxpayers and our money wisely?  2) Are we preparing our future generation with almost stone-age technology? 3) What do we really need for the future; skills or education? 4) Can we speed up the pace of the learning, or will it remain linear. 10,000 hours as per Malcolm Gladwell's book Outliers: The Story of Success. 5) Education is the biggest equalizer, but is the income gap widening or ...?  6) Technology is eliminating low-income jobs, the skills gaps are rising; what is the answer?  7) Do we need global education reform and a framework to solve it?    After our talk, I have more questions than ever; it is like 'more I learn more, I realize how little I know.'  Is a college degree still relevant and equipping our next generation to lead into 2050 and beyond?  I will invite Pradeep Khosla, UCSD Chancellor, to address this question.  He leads a campus with more than 40,000 students, seven undergraduate colleges, six academic divisions, and six graduate and professional schools with various IIT Directors.  Stay tuned! Working to transform the way the world eats—protein by protein What came first, the chicken or the egg? Arturo Elizondo is trying to make the age-old conundrum irrelevant. His Clara Foods has developed a fermentation technology that uses yeast to convert sugar directly into egg proteins—the same way brewers make beer. The animal-free proteins are a cheaper and greener replacement for the vast quantities of eggs that go into everything from instant cakes and mayonnaise to dietary supplements and pharmaceuticals. “Animals are an incredibly inefficient protein machine,” says Elizondo, whose parents immigrated to the United States from Mexico. “It's fundamental economics that we can make a protein that is cheaper and more sustainable.” Clara Foods has raised $45 million in funding, including a strategic investment from $6 billion Illinois-based food and pharmaceutical company Ingredion.

More than 40 percent of the $5 trillion global I.T. market is in North America, primarily the United States. The industry accounts for $1.8 trillion of U.S. value-added GDP (more than 10 percent of the national economy) and 11.8 million jobs. According to CompTIA, more than 525,000 software and I.T. services companies in the United States. 40,500+ tech startups were incorporated in 2018 alone. This includes software publishers, custom computer programming services suppliers, computer systems design firms, and facilities management companies. The industry draws on a highly educated and skilled U.S. workforce of nearly two million people, which has continued to grow during the past decade.  Small enterprises accounted for 64% of the net new jobs created between 1993 and 2011 — or 11.8 million from the net new jobs created 18.5 million —. During the recovery from the Great Recession of mid-2009 to 2011, small businesses accounted for 67% of net new jobs created, led by large companies with 20 to 499 employees. Data and research from the SBA Office of Advocacy Fund show that small businesses produce more than half of all new private non-agricultural gross domestic product and generate 60-80% of all new net jobs. Firms with fewer than 500 employees - drive the U.S. economy, creating jobs for nearly half of the U.S. private workforce. Small businesses account for 42.9 percent of all American payrolls, driving a ton of consumer spending into the economy and tax dollars into our state budget.
