It’s 1999, and sixteen years after its original release, a new Star Wars is finally coming. Fans have been camping out in front of theaters across the country just to be the first to see it. The beloved intergalactic saga is set to debut a slew of brand new characters, one of whom is a revolutionary CGI creation named Jar Jar Binks. Whispers begin to spread about big changes coming to the galaxy far, far away – and not everyone’s happy about it. Transcripts for The Redemption of Jar Jar Binks are available at go.ted.com/jarjar
Jar Jar Binks became one of the most polarizing figures in cinematic history when he made his debut in Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace in 1999. He was even named “the most annoying movie character of all time” by Complex Magazine. After the release, Ahmed Best, the man who played Jar Jar, was hit with the full force of the backlash — and it nearly destroyed him. The Redemption of Jar Jar Binks is a six-part journey through the early internet to understand how one of the first-ever online hate campaigns began, and to right what we got so wrong about Jar Jar the first time around. How to Be a Better Human

2022-04-0634:333

This is... NOT an episode of Conversations with People Who Hate Me. We're taking a week off, so instead we're sharing an episode of another podcast from the TED Audio Collective called How to Be a Better Human. It's a show hosted by comedian (and good friend of Dylan's) Chris Duffy, about how we can all learn to be a little less terrible. Dylan was interviewed by Chris last year and shares what he’s learned about apologies, forgiveness, and the benefits of taking the time to explore and establish our personal boundaries. If you want to hear more episodes, you can find and follow How to Be a Better Human wherever you're listening to this. And great news—they're hard at work on a new season and will be back weekly in June.
Dylan speaks to a friend who has been openly critical of this project since it began. Conversations with People Who Hate Me The Book is out now! The first rule of the internet: avoid the comments sections. On Conversations with People Who Hate Me, host Dylan Marron breaks that rule. He explores what happens when online feuders step out from behind the keyboard and get to know the human on the other side of the screen. Join Dylan as he connects people who have clashed online – from old friends to complete strangers — to explore why we believe what we believe, how we relate to each other on the internet, and just what a phone call can accomplish. While some of the comments and clapbacks quoted aren’t for the faint of heart, these conversations will be sure to fill it in this loving show that fosters unlikely connections in an age of increasing digital isolation. Whether Dylan is speaking with someone who wrote him a negative comment or is moderating a call between two strangers at odds, the results are often surprising, usually heartwarming, and always compelling. I think a major thing in this conflict was misunderstanding meanings, like "far left" doesn't mean what you think it is (I don't know you beyond this podcast, but you don't sound like an anarchist or Marxist) and she hasn't investigated beyond the surface or media definitions of terms.

It seems this outcome may be a good example of white male cishet privilege? We can get so blinded by our own "truth" that is seems almost impossible to get our eyes opened to another's reality. I do not believe, in our current world, it is even possible to have a "justice" system. We have only a very flawed politicized legal system which, like most other large systems, is ultimately controlled by those already in positions of wealth and power who are desperately working to maintain or add to what they are already privileged to have. This seems to limit their ability to put themselves in the shoes of the people negatively impacted by those systems, as well as limiting their ability to see the need for reform. Thank you for the courage to have, and make space for, these kinds of vital conversations, despite the fact that this episode left me feeling quite sad.

I find it wild to imagine that Andrew made his way onto a social media platform, on the world wide web, only to not search what he clearly doesn't understand. He is walking privilege and ignorance.

Ugh, this dude is insufferable. He's unwilling to admit that he is irrationally scared and has decision paralysis about the vaccine and just wants the decision taken out of his hands.

Hurt people hurt people is so right. I'm so glad I left religion behind, the reality is religious people are incapable of "hating the sin, not the sinner".

That guy made me sick. It's incredibly hard to listen to him speak with such a delusional and ignorant individual. It's hard to hold empathy for him at all.

For someone who teaches children about this stuff for a living, they really flopped when asked simple questions or when posed with flawed statements. Lindsay barely even spoke and when they did they were like "wow fascinating" or "that's ok that you think that." have they ever met a conservative before? You dont get anywhere by throwing your technical terms at people and then saying "it's fine that you think that." Its condescending and it pushes people away from you. Lennox was extremely open and you two wasted this opportunity to just agree with each other and make no effort to communicate with him. Somebody put me in contact with this Lennox guy and we'll figure all this out together productively.

I had initial biases coming into this episode because I am a queer Latinx Bernie Bro, but I was pleasantly surprised. Thank you, Dylan, for delivering this type of content. With that being said, I don't appreciate that Warren supporters tend to tone police Bernie and his base for being rightfully angry with the Establishment. Just some food for thought about an individual's privilege to tone police.

I absolutely love and endorse the idea of using a spouse or partner or other trusted loved one to edit one's social media comments. I'm very emotional and thus prone to outbursts, which I sometimes later regret, so I almost always ask my husband if what I'm writing is too passive-aggressive / aggressive-aggressive / hurtful / ignorant / etc. before posting... particularly if I'm in the throes of passionate anger or depression. The best way to trust myself to be the best version of me is to be aware of when it's not safe to trust myself to be the best version of me. Sounds like an oxymoron but that sums up my personality so I'm good with it.

I feel so bad for Lindsay having to have an entire conversation of "you don't exist" without even really getting to speak for themself.
