This wk Brazilian Frevo, fresh sounds from Ubuntu, classic Dizzy + Visions of Outrage from Planet B: right here and right now this week folks: musical antidotes for the uncertain times we're living in...1. Yotam Silberstein - Brooklyn Frevo (Universos, YOTAM MUSIC) Originating in Northeast Brazil, and the State of Pernambuco in particular, the frevo rhythm – which Silberstein says he is addicted to, inspired the Brooklyn-based guitarist for this composition, which features Itai Kriss’ dancing flute and Valerio Filho on the pandeiro.2. Dave Sears - Reservoir Retreat (I Always Thought My Thoughts Were Me UBUNTU) I Always Thought My Thoughts Were Me, trombonist and composer Dave Sear’s debut album, features original music as well as new arrangements of ‘In Your Own Sweet Way’ by Dave Brubeck and ‘Inner Urge’ by Joe Henderson. 3. Jon Irabagon - Bebop (Rising Sun IRRABAGAST) Irabagon evolved his arrangement of Gillespie’s “Bebop” during a months-long period of solitary practice at Falling Rock, a breathtaking canyon in the South Dakota wilderness not far from in-laws in Rapid City. 4. Alexia Bomtempo - Chameleon Lovers (Doce Carnaval ROPEADOPE) Born to an American mother and a concert-promoter Brazilian father, Bomtempo was raised in the beach culture of Rio de Janeiro, while traveling to America frequently over the years. She grew up listening to Brazilian popular music and Bossa Nova, as well as rock, folk and jazz.  5. Jasper Hoiby/Planet B - Visions of Outrage (What It Means To Be Human EDITION) "Planet B is a reminder that united we can all share the power to control our collective destiny. Let’s suspend limiting concepts of what’s possible and create a new normality that works for us all. Come and join the ride".6. Sean Gibbs Big Band - Gibb it Some More (Confluence UBUNTU) Confluence is trumpeter Sean Gibbs’ new release on Ubuntu Music and his biggest project to date. 1. Josean Jacobo - Dos Locos feat. Miguel Zenon (Herencia Criolla SELF RELEASE)This exciting album is an exploration of the Dominican pianist's Latin American and Caribbean musical influences that specifically explores Dominican jazz. Through an anthropological presentation, Jacobo guides listeners through the cultural inspiration behind each of his compositions and arrangements. Herencia Criolla features Daroll Méndez on bass and Otoniel Nicolás on drums, with special guest alto saxophonist Miguel Zenon.2. Jorge Louis Pacheco - La Conga (The Lockdown Album, Ropeadope) Hailing from Havana, Cuba, Jorge Luis Pacheco is one of the leading pianists and musicians of the new generation of jazz in Cuba. Winner of the Montreux Jazz Piano Solo Competition in Switzerland, Pacheco is a fiery young pianist with “flying hands.” 3. Tawanda - Smile (Smile, Resonance Records) Exciting Jazz-Vocal Discovery Tawanda, Winner of the 2020 Sarah Vaughan Competition4 Chris Cochrane / John Thacker - Bayard (Excavation ASTRAL SPIRITS) The debut duo release Excavation from the Brooklyn duo of Chris Cochrane & John Thayer. Led by award-winning saxophonist,Joshua Kelly (30/70 collective, PBS Young Elder of Jazz 2019), the band returns to the label with a follow up EP to the mind-bending 2021 release, 'What’s Real?'2 David Versace - Summer Party (Okra La Sape Records) Brisbane-based multi-instrumentalist David Versace shares the his much anticipated debut LP 'Okra', his first solo album for La Sape Records. Wandering effortlessly between jazz, samba, ambient and the odd dance-floor heater, 'Okra' follows 3 years of consistent releases and is his most elegant an articulated work yet.3 Doug Wamble - Homesick (Blues in the Present Tense Halyconic Records) This is Wamble's first album since 2015's The Traveler: Live in New York City, co-produced with veteran guitarist Charlie Drayton and a musical cast of longtime associates: bassist Eric Revis, drummer Jeff "Tain" Watts, and saxophonist Prometheus Jenkins (aka Branford Marsalis). 4 Kay Young - Feel Like Makin Love (Bluenote Re:imagined) Blue Note Re:imagined returns with a new 16-track compilation featuring fresh takes on music from the illustrious Blue Note vaults recorded by a heavyweight line-up of the UK jazz, soul and R&B scene’s most hotly-tipped rising stars. 5 Ron Carter - Receipt Please (Finding the Right Notes IN& OUT) In October 2022, PBS aired a two hour documentary on jazz legend Ron Carter. Six years in the making, Finding the Right Notes was produced and directed by the renowned producer/director Peter Schnall, a seven-time Emmy Award and Peabody Award winner.
