Ep 11: The Final Episode... of 2020 - Challenges, trends, learnings and 2021 #SLC feat. Jonny & Suki

It's the last episode of 2020 and i'm joined by my guests Jonny & Suki to wrap up the year by reflecting on what happened in the most universally challenging one of our lives thus far. Here we cover a lot of things which happened in 2020 to various communities, touch on some big events, look at how life had changed for us over the lockdown period, trends we noticed and any new things we picked up. We share our experiences and challenges in both our personal and work lives. How redundancy turned into opportunity, touch on mental health and the importance of you, our biggest learnings from this eye opening year and what would we be doing now if COVID had never happened. I come up with a new term/brand too SLC, it's all about you. We wrap with looking forwards into 2021, how we think the new normal will be and new years resolutions. It's a packed send off as I go on a recording break for a lil bit but rest assured, that time will be spent writing new episodes and arranging guests for your future listening enjoyment. Contact:@crazybritasian - www.instagram.com/crazybritasiancrazybritasian@gmail.comSubscribe on podcast listening platforms, share and tag on your socials to spread the love, appreciate y'all and have you ever seen a shoebox Xmas tree? Ep 10 (Xmas Ep): Jingle the Asian way, there’s a Grinch among us - feat. Jonny & Suki

MILESTONE ALERT!! We made it to episode 10! Big thank you to everyone for listening and the support up to this point, couldn't have gotten here without you and as cliche as it sounds, I mean it and appreciate you! On this episode I bring back two guests from ep 2, Jonny & Suki and we talk about Xmas! What it means to us, how we celebrate it and traditions we have with family vs friends. Xmas differences between Asian and Western households, spending it in another country and adding in some nostalgia on how it used to be for our younger selves vs now as we've gotten older. With the season of course comes movies, songs and gifts where we find out pretty quickly there's a Grinch among us, have a guess who. Hope you all enjoy this light hearted fun episode 10! Ep 9: Take 2 Good News but... Chef Philli

Ep 9 is a round up of a load of good news which happened in the ESEA community in the past week, most of which was in the sports and entertainment space but there was one particular event which was a curve ball. Originally this was part recorded and supposed to drop on Sunday but the whole sound file got lost, thanks tech issues! So I recorded this late night mid week after work.A lot of really good things happened in the world of music and sports namely 88 Rising launching their radio station on Sirius XM, Rina Sawayama winning awards, gracing multiple front covers and just winning! Dumbfoundead getting his own radio show Dumb Early on the 88rising Radio station and many Asian artists guests featuring on the show. My one's to watch to be the next big thing are Year of the Ox and Luna Li.Sports, Korean NFL player Younghoe Koo is the highest scoring player in the league and in F1 Asian success are on the rise! For the first time there were two British East and South East Asians on the F1 grid (Alex Albon Ansusinha, British Thai and Jack Aitken, British South Korean Hapa). In F2 Yuki Tsunoda (Japan) wins the final race of the season and secures an F1 seat for 2021, whilst Guanyu Zhou (China) finished second. Asian success stories in western dominated sports! Amazing!Besea Poets was launched and spearheaded by Christy Ku @kukadoodles which is an amazing initiative giving a platform and collective space for ESEA poets in the UK to come together and share their art.The meat and bones of the episode is the but of the good news. The debacle surrounding Chef Philli Armitage-Mattin the self proclaimed Asian specialist Master Chef contestant who presented Asian food as 'dirty' monolith that needed refining. Making it part of her 'brand' to be one who refines it using the #prettydirtyfood and the phrase 'dirty food refined'. This cultural insensitivity spun out into something bigger and I go into how this stain on a white shirt just kept getting worse and spreading with every clean up attempt. The one good thing which came out of it to challenge the negativity and bring positive to Asian food however was the hashtag #ESEAEATS which aims to celebrate Asian food culture in the right way! Started by Chinese Chippy Girl (ep 6 guest Georgie Ma) and Anna Chan this was widely adopted and continues to grow with strength! When posting on your socials about Asian food be sure to use the #ESEAEATS to add to the positive vibes and energy! This episode is sponsored by Coul Recruitment, an English teaching recruitment agency offering overseas English speakers an opportunity to teach English in China, Korea or Japan. Ep 8: Women in finance and what's the industry really like to work in? feat. Jia

Ep 8! Another episode and we’re coming to an end of the UK’s lockdown 2.0 and the final stretch of the work year. Hang in there guys, take care of yourselves, slow things down and try not to burnout because we’re almost there! On this episode my guest is my good friend Jia, a COO at a leading investment bank. We talk about the finance industry in this episode, the truths and myths of one of the holy trinities of Asian career paths (medical, legal, finance/accounting). Does the Wolf of Wall Street and stereotypical trader lifestyle really exist? Does a controversial tweet really move the market? Do you really need to have a finance degree? What's the personality fit recommended for someone to work in this field? Not only this, but usually when you think of someone working in this field you would envisage a male figure but what's the story for women in finance? We delve into all this and more from a personal and professional view with Jia. Hope you enjoy guys :) Contact Info IG: @crazybritasian - www.instagram.com/crazybritasian  FB: www.facebook.com/crazybritasian  Twitter: twitter.com/crazybritasian Email: crazybritasian@gmail.com  Episode Sponsor: Coul Recruitment, IG: @coulrecruitment - www.coulrecruitment.com Promo code: CBA2020 for partial fee reimbursement

Ep 7: Podcast episode cover art 130 Total number of plays Korean British Born Hapa - KBB...H? Feat. Hanguk Hapa

Episode 7 Who's loves K Pop? K Drama's? Korean Food? The Korean pop culture wave has been flowing and rising for years to the point where now, the cultural phenomena has broken through the Western barrier and taken the world by storm. Where it used to be the East taking inspiration from the West, the script has been flipped and we see more and more influences on daily lifestyle facets. It's at the point now where it's become the most popular of the asian cultures and rightly so. But away from the screen, how much do you know about the Korean culture? Particularly in the UK. How many British Koreans do you actually know? Or British Korean Hapa's (British mixed race Korean)?  Half Korean, half English Foodie Hanguk Hapa (Becky), breaks it down for us in this episode. Talking about the landscape of the Korean community in the UK, her experience growing up being half Korean, half British, cultural identity acceptance and cultural obstacles she's overcome through the years. Of course we talk about the fun cool popular stuff too and much much more! I learnt a lot in this episode and it was so much fun chatting with Hanguk Hapa :) Hanguk Hapa: IG: @hangukhapa - www.instagram.com/hangukhapa FB: https://www.facebook.com/hanguk.hapa.9 YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC3T9tminQRRaGocSMQtOV-A Asian Recommendations Chick and Beers IG: @chickandbeers - www.instagram.com/chickandbeers K Town BBQ All You Can Eat IG: @k_town_bbq - www.instagram.com/k_town_bbq Contact - IG: @crazybritasian - www.instagram.com/crazybritasian FB: www.facebook.com/crazybritasian Twitter: twitter.com/crazybritasian Email: crazybritasian@gmail.com Sponsor: 05:23 - 08:36 - Coul Recruitment, IG: @coulrecruitment - www.coulrecruitment.com Promo code: CBA2020 for fee reimbursement  Episode begins: 11:09

This time it's Georgie Ma host of Chinese Chippy Girl. We talk about our experiences growing up in a Chinese takeaway, chip shop, restaurant or family owned business. An experience the vast majority of first generation British born ESEA's grew up in and know very well. We cover various nuances of takeaways, challenges, the ways it's shaped a generations values and work ethic; how the landscape has changed over time, the dishes it's created that you wouldn’t find in Asia and much much more including the pride of a takeaway's curry sauce? Ep 5: Stop the presses! Feat. Viv Yau - big announcement, podcast journey, activism and life experiences

Ep 5 is a very special first podcast collab with none other than the woman who reinvigorated and inspired this and many other pods to get over the line. The phenomenal Viv Yau of the 'But Where Are You From podcast'. The person who started the petition for better representation of Asians in the media. The woman who is 1/6 of Besea.n and got Asians represented in Parliament for the first time! But those are just the start of her list of achievements. Exclusively fresh off her announcement (literally hours) to take a well deserved break from podcasting, I talk to Viv about her podcast journey to this point, what inspired her, what led to the decision and how she feels about it. We delve into the experiences which altogether led to kicking it all off for her. Growing up in a town without a cultural community, identity crisis from meeting other east and south east asians for the first time, cultural code switching and much much more. Since the launch of her podcast there have been a plethora of changes and developments and we talk all about it! We play a game of her own creation as an ode to her pod and what plans she has going forwards during the break. Be sure to check out Viv at @itsvivyau - https://www.instagram.com/itsvivyau/Her podcast But Where Are You From at: https://open.spotify.com/show/71r4oAbdEH1B7g51ckOwnt?si=250pVhsKSvSNkz_-hGuN2wBesean Instagram - @besea.n https://www.instagram.com/besea.n/ Twitter - @besea_n https://twitter.com/besea_nAsian Recommendation:Illustrators Alittlebitsketchy https://www.instagram.com/alittlebitsktchy/Karlie Wu https://www.instagram.com/wukarlie/Diamond Canopy https://www.instagram.com/diamondcanopy/Chop Stick n Poke https://www.instagram.com/chop_stick_n_poke/PodcastsChinese Chippy Girl https://www.instagram.com/chinesechippygirl/ Respect the Mic https://www.instagram.com/respectthemicpod/ Rice to Meet You https://www.instagram.com/ricetomeetyoupod/ Yellowbeepod https://www.instagram.com/yellowbeepod/

Welcome to episode 4, thank you everyone for sticking with the series and thus far, I appreciate all of you! This episode I have my friend Tommy who is a millennial 2nd generation British born Chinese. Where the majority of British Born East Asians are first generation and have similar relatable upbringings, there are few who have a parent who went through something similar as their friends and peers. We talk about the differences between our upbringings and amongst many other things we cover topics such as cultural exposure, parental relationships and identity crisis.Crazy Brit Asian: www.instagram.com/crazybritasian/ - @crazybritasianTricky Wagon: www.instagram.com/trickywagon/Yoko Property: www.yokoproperty.co.uk

Ep 3: Class is in session - Going to school as a British East Asian

This episode we explore the experiences of going to school as a British East Asian.School is something the mass majority of us have been through and have fond memories of favourite subjects, teachers and childhood friends. There is however the many challenges which come with identity when going to school as a British East Asian. The realisation that you are different from the other kids around you comes very early on as does the experience of racism and stereotyping, direct or subtle. There is also the responsibility to uphold your values and represent your culture as a model minority all whilst trying to fit in and score that A grade. As ESEA we are not just any minority but the minority minority which comes with differences out of our control and it's not just the way we look which is different to our peers, but the way we live, particularly the environment we go home to. The challenge of cultural dynamic and social interaction at school vs at home is it's own juggling act and the source of a widely experienced social disconnect that doesn't prepare many of us for the 'real world'. As western society remains at the front door, so does the learning and application of it. Socials: https://www.instagram.com/crazybritasianAsian RecommendationYear of the OX - https://www.youtube.com/c/YEAROFTHEOXKorean American Hip Hop Duo based in LA who have two impactful songs about the rise of xenophobia and asian hate crime during the pandemic. Ep 2: The Birthday Episode - Turning The Big 3 0 feat. Jess, Jonny and Suki

Welcome to ep 2, the Birthday episode! We made it and we're adulting!First of all, thank you all for the support on the launch and everyone who listened to ep 1, followed on IG, the streaming platforms and shared on their socials! The messages and support have been an amazingly unexpected surprise and extremely encouraging so thank you! This is the first ever guest episode, three guests at that! They are my very good friends Jess, Jonny and Suki whom I met and started uni with and were one of the first asian friends I ever made, 11 years ago (2009)! At the time of recording we're all 29 and turning 30 very soon. As of this upload however, I am now officially 30. Hence why i’ve dropped this on my 30th birthday! One of my goals was to start this podcast before 30 and I made it by launching Crazy Brit Asian a week ahead of it, phew! As we approach this life milestone, this episode we discuss our feelings about turning 30, asian expectations, the societal timeline, adulting, life lessons and looking forward. We play a game where we see if we are on track according to what society expects a 30 year old to have achieved. Pre warning though, the last 10 mins the audio does drop a bit because of tech issues I lost that part from some tech issues and had to convert a video recording into an mp3. So apologies in advance and you’ll have to turn it up from there. But hope you enjoy! The Asian Recommendation this episode is Sir David Attenborough who joined Instagram the day before recording! He may not be asian by ethnicity but we can all agree he is an honorary citizen of the planet earth and accepted across all communities. His newest project A Life on Our Planet launches on Netflix today too! A documentary filmed throughout his 70 year long career which delivers the important message of sustainability that time is ticking on not just our planets survival but human survival and immediate action needs to be taken now. His other documentary Extinction: The Facts is also available on BBC iPlayer.Follow here and on socials for the next episode and to keep up to date with upcoming content :) Share and drop a review on Apple PodcastsIG: @crazybritasian - https://www.instagram.com/crazybritasian/ FB: www.facebook.com/crazybritasian Episode plug:Check out www.yokoproperty.co.uk for any short term accommodation needs in Milton Keynes and Northampton (UK)
