Salas was 15 at the time of the killing and 16 when he was imprisoned. The case hinged on testimony of a paid police informant who has since recanted his testimony that Salas was bragging around town about the killing; Arreola’s girlfriend at the time, who reportedly told the victim’s mother that she was only able to identify Salas from a photo montage following hypnosis; and evidence that the pickup truck Arreola was shot in was removed from the scene and cleaned before it was processed for evidence.During his 26 years of imprisonment, Salas has always maintained his innocence.” the stars of ID's hit show, Reasonable Doubt, Detective Chris Anderson and Fatima Silva, Esq. for the podcast that fans have been waiting for. Drug overdoses in the US are at a record high. Heroin has been replaced by the single deadliest drug threat to our nation, Fentanyl. Marijuana has been decriminalized in over 20 states, yet people remain in federal prison serving mandatory sentences for possession and sale of marijuana. In the past fifty years, the ‘war’ on drugs has fueled incarceration, exacerbated addiction and hampered economic progress. Lava for Good's The War on Drugs podcast, co-hosted by comedian Clayton English and Greg Glod, senior criminal justice fellow at Americans for Prosperity, shines a spotlight on how our communities have crumbled under the weight of this so-called ‘war,’ and explores the politicization of public healthy policy, institutional racism and classism in the legislation and administration of criminal law, and how decriminalization and other alternatives could bring the fruitless ‘war’ to an end. It is estimated that, on average, approximately 15% of officers in the U.S. experience PTSD symptoms. More police officers and firefighters die by suicide than in the line of duty. They are front-row witnesses to horrific atrocities including, suicides, motor vehicle accidents that result in trauma and/or death, child abuse or neglect, overdoses, and acts of domestic violence. Exposure to these traumatic daily events impairs their well-being and affects their ability to perform duties to the public. Long-term effects of PTSD often lead to behavioral dysfunction such as substance abuse, aggression, and suicide. Sadly, many officers do not seek help due to the shame and guilt associated with PTSD. For these reasons, our very own Detective Chris Anderson is co-authoring a book with former police officer, Kevin Donaldson, addressing the impact of trauma and PTSD on law enforcement. In this episode of Crime & Cookie Juice, Anderson and Donaldson discuss their individual experiences with nearly losing their lives in the line of duty, and nearly losing themselves and their families in the aftermath of these traumatic events. Anderson & Donaldson are on a mission to destigmatize mental-health issues in law enforcement. About Kevin Donaldson: Surviving post traumatic stress and multiple suicide attempts, Kevin Donaldson found resiliency in the embrace of his trauma. Retiring from the police department in New Jersey in 2014 after being involved in a shooting during a domestic incident, Kevin struggled to find peace inside his own chaotic mind dealing with feelings that were foreign and new while fighting through the difficulties that life threw his way. Kevin now chronicles his struggles by speaking out and destigmatizing mental health to find resiliency in facing suffering head-on by showing that there is a way to find your smile once again.Donaldson is co-authoring the book, 'Man, You Are Crazy', chronicling his journey into and out of the darkness exploring mental health in the police world. December 1984, the town of Greeley, Colorado, is getting into the Christmas spirit. At a school holiday concert, 12-year-old Jonelle Matthews sings alongside her classmates. Later that night, she’s dropped off to an empty house. By the time her family returns, Jonelle has vanished. For more than 3 1/2 decades, Jonelle’s disappearance was a mystery. Was she taken? Did she runaway? Was she still alive? Then, in 2019, Jonelle’s remains were discovered near the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, only 15 miles from her home. With the discovery came a troubling new question: Had the truth been hiding in plain sight the entire time? Was the man who couldn’t stop obsessing over Jonelle’s disappearance also the person who took her? From Campside Media and Wondery comes Season Two of SUSPECT – Vanished in the Snow. Former CNN reporter, Ashley Fantz, joins Chris & Fatima and explains why she chose to cover this mind-bending cold case. About Ashley Fantz:Former CNN reporter, Ashley Fantz, focuses on criminal justice and gender issues. Her 2018 CNN investigative story "Destroyed" was nominated for an Emmy. Destroyed revealed that dozens of law enforcement agencies across the United States had destroyed rape kits before the statutes of limitations expired to prosecute unsolved sex crimes. The destruction of these kits - most that had never been tested for DNA - happened following flawed and incomplete police investigations. Most recently, she reported, co-wrote and hosted the podcast "Suspect, season 2: Vanished in the Snow." The story of Jonelle Matthews.
