In 1997, a murder took place in West Delhi that would remain unsolved for nearly three decades. A 58-year-old man, Sharif Hasan Khan, was found dead inside a room at TC Camp, Raghubir Nagar, Delhi. What followed was a 29-year-long manhunt — and an accused who allegedly disappeared under a new identity.This is the story of the 1997 Delhi murder cold case, which finally saw a major breakthrough in July 2026 when Delhi Police Crime Branch arrested Mohammad Fahim, also known as “Ali Bhai,” from Thakurganj, Lucknow.According to police, Sharif Hasan Khan, a resident of Faizabad district (now Ayodhya), Uttar Pradesh, worked at a clothing shop in Rajouri Garden, West Delhi. In April 2026, a shocking case emerged from Buldhana, Maharashtra, after a partially burnt and headless woman's body was discovered near the Rajura farmland, close to a riverbank. A skull was reportedly found around 100 metres away. With no clear identity of the deceased, police began investigating what appeared to be a brutal murder. The investigation eventually led police to Shivani Kalmekar, a young woman from Khadki village in Burhanpur district who had been reported missing. Her father Bapurao Kalmekar and her brother were arrested after investigators concluded that Shivani had allegedly been killed in an honour killing over her relationship with Arun. Police alleged that her body had been transported more than 100 kilometres to Buldhana, where it was burnt and the head was separated to prevent identification. But then came the twist that completely changed the case.Shivani was alive.According to police, she was found living with Arun near Nashik. She later appeared at the Khaknar Police Station and reportedly told officers that she was alive and asked them to release her father and brother.
