Each week Megan is asking the Final Rose Tarot cards what we can expect from this week’s episode. This week’s card is the King of Flutes which is called the Single Dad. The card describes emotional maturity as managing turbulent emotional tides and learning how to prioritize what means the most to you. We think this describes multiple people in this episode! The pressure is on because it is Hometowns! The families of our amazing final four all come to Minneapolis to meet Queen Michelle. We get a better glimpse into what makes each of these men who they really are. What we loved the most though, was the diversity in the family dynamics we see on screen - the differing dynamics are things we see in households all across this country. We also see a rose ceremony that breaks our hearts. BIPOC highlight goes to all the Black dads we saw on the show tonight! Absent Black fathers is a myth, perpetuated by racism and the media. It is so beautiful and important to see the diverse relationships Joe, Rodney, Brandon, and Nayte have with their fathers. Read more about the myth of absent Black fathers and the article that Matt James tweeted about during his season.  Links Discussed in the Episode: School of Chocolate Season 1 Trailer (Netflix) - Danielle’s cousin is Cedrick! Last week, on a one-on-one date, Brandon and Michelle stop at an ice cream truck and enjoy some tasty treats, while in Minnesota. SO, Danielle found an ice cream-related story for Megan to cover. This is the story of an ice cream man seeking revenge for a wrong done to him but shoots and kills two brothers and wounds another four people who have nothing to do with his injury. It’s the story of long-awaited justice for the victims and family of the victims in this case; despite being arrested shortly after the murder, the trial did not start for TEN YEARS. (Story Starts at 5:45). Links Discussed in the Episode: School of Chocolate Season 1 Trailer (Netflix) - Danielle’s cousin is Cedric! Make sure to watch and cheer him on! Y’ALL. Buckle up because this one is a WILD RIDE, in several different directions. Danielle was absolutely SHOOKETH. We saw a group date based on some Viking stuff, so Megan based a story on some Viking stuff. It’s really the story of a potentially cursed ship AND two totally separate true crime incidents? Buckle up because you are not ready - we promise. Unfortunately, this ship has seen its fair share of horrible incidents, including the 1986 murder of Antti Eljaala, the 1987 Murder of Klaus Schelkle and the Attempted Murder of Bettina Taxis, and the deaths of 852 passengers and crew aboard when it sunk in 1994. (Story Starts at 11:15) Links Discussed in the Episode: School of Chocolate Season 1 Trailer (Netflix) - Danielle’s cousin is Cedric! Make sure to watch and cheer him on! Each week Megan is asking the Final Rose Tarot cards what we can expect from this week’s episode. This week’s card is the 2 of Rings which is called the Final Two. The card describes juggling and centering. It’s all about focusing on the life you want and guiding yourself to that, which is spot on for this week’s episode. This week we are joined by four of Michelle’s students! They are adorable, funny, and insightful. We wouldn’t be mad if they had regular hosting duties. The kids plan all the dates this week, and they pick Clayton for a one-on-one. Is this his time to shine? Will we see why production picked him to be the next Bachelor?  Negative ghostrider, the pattern is full (Top Gun reference). We also see the final group date of the season, Michelle sends toxic ass Martin home (good riddance). We also see a one-on-one with Brandon, and Brandon meets Michelle’s parents. BIPOC highlight goes to Brandon Jones! Brandon had a one on one this week and we cringe, with him wearing her dad’s swim trunks, and swoon seeing Brandon ask if her parents would support a marriage proposal if he makes it to the end. Brandon has definitely grown on us. We really like his vibe when he is being his authentic self. Find Brandon on IG at BMacJones You can always connect with us at: linktr.ee/CrimeandRoses. Each week Megan is asking the Final Rose Tarot cards what we can expect from this week’s episode. This week’s card is the Queen of Mirrors, which is called “The Bitch” - and it describes Danielle to a tee - she takes no shit and can read you to filth, but is really just a softy. This week, Michelle and the men fly to the land of ten thousand lakes, the land that Danielle loves, the home of the Vikings-- Minnesota! We see two one-on-one dates and one group date. Joe gets a Minneapolis themed date- they throw out a first pitch at a Twins game and see Michelle’s high school. Joe opens up about life after basketball and the struggles he faced with that. (CONTENT WARNING: DEPRESSION/SUICIDE). The group date is themed after the Vikings and there are too many visible neck veins for Megan. Nayte gets a lake themed date on Lake Minnetonka, with two of Michelle’s besties. Throughout this whole episode we see Chris S. on some whiny white boy shit and we hate it; he even has the audacity to interrupt Michelle’s date with Nayte, how rude! This week for our BIPOC highlight, we are highlighting and saying goodbye, our main squeeze who did not get the airtime he deserved, Leroy Arthur (IG Handle). Leroy is a biomedical PhD student, who was born in Italy to Ghanaian parents, who emigrated to the U.S. to live the American dream. Leroy says that when he dates, he dates with intention. He does not like to gamble, with money or hearts, but does love breakfast in bed. Leroy, we will miss your style and face, hope to see you on BIP! This is a sneak peek of our November 2021 True Crime Patreon Exclusive content. You can hear the full episode here, starting at the $3 level of our Patreon membership! CONTENT WARNING: brief mention of suicide This month we have a listener-requested story! Thanks, Jane! Megan tells the story of the Glensheen Mansion Murders of Elisabeth Cogdon and Velma Pietila. Elisabeth was the youngest daughter of a very wealthy family in Duluth, Minnesota. She was in her eighties and recovering from a recent stroke when she and her nurse were murdered in the middle of the night. This story doesn’t end where you think it will, because just wait, there’s more. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/crimeandroses/support
This week we are joined again by a friend of the Pod, Renise from the Black Bachelor Babes - make sure you follow on Instagram immediately, also check them out on Clubhouse. Listeners, if you ever want to join us to tell us a true crime story, just send us a DM or email, we would love to have you on! Renise had serious questions about the truthfulness behind one of the Bachelorette contestant's claims - Jamie said he’s never watched reality TV before. Renise tells us the horrible story of the murder of two young boys, who are connected to Alton Williams, a cast member of the Real World: Las Vegas. Jonathan (9) and Charlie (13) were just two kids trying to have a fun day with their friend. What happened to them is absolutely disgusting and terrifying. Each week Megan is asking the Final Rose Tarot cards what we can expect from this week’s episode. This week’s card is the 8 of Mirrors, which is called “In Your Head” - and it talks about insecurities being triggered, and how to get out of your own head. This week we see two one-on-one dates and one group date this week. The first one-on-one is with Martin; they drive cars and then hit a hot tub, and have an interesting conversation about Jamie. On the group date, it’s a slumber party-themed date with a guest appearance from WWE’s Bella twins. Also on the group date, none of the men really approach Michelle, making her feel unseen. The second one-on-one date of the week is with Rick, they ride a sky gondola and walk through some nature, and read a wish box. Rick shares his family’s story, and it’s a difficult one. This week we are highlighting Olumide “Olu” Onajide (IG Handle). Olu looked mighty damn fine, with his deck of cards for abs during the group date. We also saw his sweet and sensitive side, when she shared his feelings about being an older brother and uplifting and supporting his sisters. We have been waiting a long time to see Olu talk on screen and we were NOT disappointed. Vulnerability in black men is beautiful! This week we say goodbye to two BIPOC contestants, Romeo and Will. Each week Megan is asking the Final Rose Tarot cards what we can expect from this week’s episode. This week’s shuffle resulted in two cards: Page of Mirrors and the Knight of Rings. Page of Mirrors is called The Gossip, and Knight of Rings is called the Late Bloomer - and for this episode, the cards are HIT-TING. We’re talking like, batting a thousand - just like our World Series Champs, the Atlanta Braves. It’s week three of Michelle’s season, and the drama has arrived. We see a Top Gun style group date, featuring the gorgeous Jay Ellis, a one-on-one truth or dare date with Rodney, and a spoken word poetry date, hosted by poet Rudy Francisco. We bear witness to the much promoted “jacket gate” and… while the Jamie drama was bubbling last week, this week it is boiling over. This week we are highlighting Rodney Mathews (IG Handle). Rodney and Michelle had such a sweet and funny one on one, we just have to love him! Danielle has her reservations, but Megan gets her on the Rodney train and they are headed to Stan Town, USA! We also say goodbye to zaddy Spencer Williams and Mollique Johnson. Links Discussed in this Episode: Crime and Roses: Michelle Young Cast Bio Breakdown Non-Murder Episode: How to Fix a Drug Scandal Danielle discusses the Massachusetts Drug Lab Scandal. Two women, Annie Dookhan and Sonja Farak, compromised the entire Massachusetts judicial system with Annie falsifying documents to remain the superstar of the office and Sonja battling serious drug addiction. Danielle also discusses the ACLU's fight for justice for the over 75,000 convictions. A lot of her information came from "How to Fix a Drug Scandal" which is available on Netflix. In week two of Michelle’s season, we see Michelle and Joe (Minnesota’s Mr. Basketball, 2011) play some one-on-one, on a group date. We also see WNBA stars Chicago Sky’s Diamond DeShields and Las Vegas Aces forward Dearica Hamby. Not surprisingly, Danielle covers a story about basketball and gives us some facts about b-ball and Memphis, Tennessee. Danielle tells the story of basketball player and hometown hero Lorenzen Wright. Lorenzen played high school, college, and professional basketball in Memphis, Tennessee. Lorenzen, the community advocate, was murdered in 2010. His case had no leads until 2017 when a murderous love triangle and cousin were brought to light. NOTE: There is a suspect that goes to trial in 2022, and if a person isn’t convicted, they are presumed innocent until proven guilty. Don’t worry, we’ll follow for case updates. In the premiere, we met a few of Michelle’s students, including two Somali students. The metro area of Minneapolis has one of the highest Somali populations in the world (outside of East Africa). Will Danielle be giving us Minnesota stories all season long, probably! Danielle tells Justine Ruszczyk Damond’s story. Justine was originally from Australia, living on the south side of Minneapolis. Justine was doing what a good neighbor does and was reporting a potential crime in her neighborhood. They say, see something, say something; so she did. Somali Minneapolis Police Officer Mohamed Noor and his partner arrived on the scene and shot Justine outside of her home, claiming they heard a noise that startled them and thought that Justine was the perpetrator. This case occurred in 2017, prior to the murder of George Floyd, and it touches on officer-involved shootings, race, the Somali immigrant population in Minneapolis, and the policies and procedures of deadly force. Megan is starting a new segment this season, and doing a tarot card reading for each episode, thanks to the babes at Final Rose Tarot (follow them on IG!). Each week she’s asking the cards what we can expect from this week’s episode. This week’s card was the 5 of Rings, which is called “Insecure.” It’s pretty clear to us that one or more of these men are feeling pretty insecure in their connection. It’s week two of Michelle’s season and so far the episodes are back to the normal format of the show, which we appreciate. We see a group date where Michelle teaches, and Mia, a student, schools everyone- mainly PeterPizza. We also see a one-on-one with Jamie (CONTENT WARNING for this segment: discussion of suicide at 23:54). We also see a basketball-themed group date where Joe really seems to shine. We see rumors start to pick up about Michelle and Joe’s connection. The episode is brought full circle with a rose ceremony. This week we are going to say see ya and highlight Pardeep Singh. The neuroscientist podcaster, from New York, is the first Indian American to receive a rose on the Bachelorette. We are sad to see him leave but want to thank him for his contribution to the diversity of the franchise. Find Pardeep on Instagram at PardeepInBrooklyn. Lastly, we say goodbye to Daniel and PJ, Michelle is not here for a firefighter. On top of going to school, Dru was also working two jobs AND volunteering in the community through her sorority. On November 22, 2003, everyone’s worst fear came true when Dru was abducted from the Columbia Mall parking lot in Grand Fork, by a dangerous sex offender with a troubled past. Dru’s murder leads to many law and policy changes in both North Dakota and Minnesota. There are also updates to the case as recent as last month, September 2021. It is Michelle Young's Bachelorette premiere week and we are READY for our queen to grace our screens! Michelle (and Danielle) is from Minnesota, and Michelle is a teacher. So this week, Megan tells a story from Minnesota involving a teacher. Just for Danielle, Megan throws in some extra facts about Minnesota. Megan tells the heartbreaking story of the murder of Jason Wilkman and the abduction of Mary and Elizabeth Stauffer. One of Mary’s students develops a crush on her, and this crush turns into a dangerous obsession. Mary and her daughter are held hostage by her former student for 53 days. FIFTY-THREE DAYS. It’s game time! The clock has been ticking down since the end of Matt’s season, but the buzzer finally rings, it’s the moment we’ve all been waiting for. It’s Michelle’s season of the Bachelorette! She shoots, we score; our queen has arrived and has a permanent place on our screen for the remainder of 2021 and our hearts forever. We see limo entrances, intro packages, a man with a plan getting the boot, a cocktail party, and a rose ceremony. We are already so excited about what this season holds for Michelle. This week we are giving the BIPOC highlight to Tunde “Nayte” Olukoya. Nayte is SO fine... we mean delicious, we’re talking scrum-diddly-umptious. Michelle thinks so too and gives him the First Impression Rose. Megan is ready to love him, Danielle is scared to get hurt. Find Nayte on Instagram at kingbabatunde. From the ABC Cast bios, his dream woman is outgoing, spontaneous, and has enough swagger of her own to keep up with him. Nayte can't dance to save his life. Nayte likes Edible Arrangements. We also say goodbye to BIPOC contestants Jomarri, Edward, and Garrett (#NoMoreGarretts). On this episode we are joined by a special guest, our lady lawyer bestie and badass, Kelcee! She is filling in Megan, who is on vacation attending a family wedding. Last week we saw the three hour Bachelor in Paradise finale (which could have been one hour)! We saw three couples get engaged and two couples reconnect after leaving the beach separately. We specifically see the first black couple of the franchise, Riley and Maurissa! We really enjoyed this season of BIP and hope you enjoyed the recaps! We are so excited for Michelle’s season! Danielle tells the story of a beautiful black couple, Mike and Nia. They were college sweethearts who were described as successful, ambitious, outgoing, spontaneous, loving and humble. On April 3, 2010, they celebrated their recent engagement in New Jersey, where they were  from. On their way home, they were met with three teens/young adults with a pure evil plot that left Mike and Nia dead, on what was supposed to be such a special day. So we’ve come to the end of the road. Still, we can’t let you go... without one more episode. That’s right, it's the finale night of Season 7 of Bachelor in Paradise. We see the end of the Noah and Abigail saga, we see fantasy suite dates and THREE engagements. One of the engagements is the FIRST engaged Black couple in franchise history, yes you read that correctly. For the finale, we have 60 BIPOC points! We did not have any dates. We saw Abigail, Mari, Thomas, Aaron, and Serena P. give the gab. We also saw Chelsea and Natasha on our screen and were sent home. This franchise is not a safe space for black women so Danielle takes away 6 points for Natasha and Chelsea’s departure. Danielle gives 10 bonus points for the BIPOC contestants that get engaged. Megan points out that all the couples have one BIPOC person. We also see our first black love story with Maruissa and Riley. Danielle also takes away 1 point for the Kendall show up, Serena (and Joe) didn't deserve that mess during their engagement. Last week on Bachelor in Paradise, a tropical storm shut down the beach. This week, Megan tells the story of a shooting in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina that devastated New Orleans, Louisiana. The Danziger Bridge Shootings, perpetrated by those tasked to protect and serve, resulted in the murders of James Brisette and Ronald Madison, and the shooting of four other surviving victims. Prepare to get real mad, real quick! CONTENT WARNING: Child victim, police shooting, police brutality, racism. (Story starts at: 10:16) We also briefly discuss the Gabby Petito case. For the time being, we will not be covering this case, but we may in the future. There is new information coming in every day, the story may change drastically overnight. Gabby’s family deserves answers and they deserve justice. So do the families of thousands of missing people of color in this country. We also need to keep in mind that American Indigenous women face homicide rates at 10 times the national average. This week is very upsetting, we see the Aaron/Ivan confrontation that was teased two weeks ago and we got a snippet of last week. The battle reveals that our fave, King Ivan, may be a liar? Megan is inconsolable, so is Amanda from DTKPod (probably). We also see two new arrivals, who come armed with date cards. It’s Anna Redman (she’s entertaining men for money) from Matt’s season and Mykenna Dorn (of facial expression fame) from Pilot Pete’s season. We also see Paradise Prom, and Grocery Store Joe and Serena P are named Prom King and Queen. This episode also brings us the rise and fall of the Noah and Abigail saga. Are they done for good? Are there red flags? We discuss. This week we have 56 BIPOC points. We have no BIPOC dates or contestants with only screen time. We hear from all the BIPOC contestants on the beach Aaron, Ivan, Natasha, Chelsea, Maurissa, Mari, Abigail, Riley Thomas, and Serena P. Danielle gives 3 bonus points for the hotel drama where Ivan decided to steal some time with Alexa Caves (good choice, because she is dope AF).
