Critical Care St James's Hospital in the past year, have abolished the practice of measuring Gastric Residual Volumes (GRV's). This practice has been ingrained in many ICU's nationally and internationally for many years now despite little to no evidence to support it. We interview key members of the MDT today including Dr Arnaud-Felix Miailhe Consultant Intensivist, Emer O Sullivan Clinical Specialist Dietitian and Deirdre Doyle Practice Development Facilitator Critical Care St James's Hospital about the changes in practice, the literature surrounding this practice and the value of MDT involvement in driving change.
Aoife Dillon is an ANP on the Home First specialist team for older persons in the ED Department in St James's hospital. Aoife speaks with us today about the older persons experience in the acute hospital setting, her experience meeting patients post an ICU stay and the role of advanced practice in the patients experience of accessing healthcare. Dr Natalie McEvoy StAR Research Lecturer in Critical Care nurisng at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) joins us today to talk about her nursing journey, completing her PhD and the journey from the bedside into fulltime academia. In anticipation of Advanced Practice week 2023 we are joined today by two of our own Critical Care ANPs from St James's Hospital Rachel Egan & Emma Morrissey. We are very lucky to have a team of 7, soon to become 8 ANPs in our Critical Care.
Zoe and her new husband Brian were caught up in the deadly wildfires in 2018 in Greece ultimately claiming the life of her new husband. Zoe and Brian were on honeymoon in Greece when elation turned to devastation and despair. Today, Zoe bravely talks us through her journey from the initial fire, her injuries, coming back to Ireland from Greece and the wonderful care she received in the National Burns Unit St James's Hospital. Zoe also talks about where she is now in terms of her recovery. Zoe is joined on the episode today with Patricia, Clinical Facilitator in Burns unit St James's Hospital. NOTE: This episode was recorded in June 2023 and the British Burns Association annual conference took place in Dublin in June 2023.
