Greg Pak returns to the Cryptid Creator Corner and there is much to discuss. Fans of Greg's work are going to have a very busy month as Supernatural #1 is out October 22nd, Dungeons & Dragons: The Fallbacks #1 is out October 15th, and Return to Planet Hulk is out October 8th. Greg and Jimmy talk about all three series. Listen as Greg teases a little bit about what Dean and Sam will be facing in Supernatural. Plus Greg talks about the fun of writing the characters in The Fallbacks and what it was like returning to Sakaar after 20 years. This is a fantastic episode. Greg is one of (if not THEE) nicest guys in comics.
From the Publisher:
THE BROTHERS WINCHESTER RETURN!Get ready to hit the road again with Dean and Sam as they prowl the highways and byways of small-town America in search of demonic wrongdoing to put right! Set between the foundational first and second seasons of the landmark television series, this brand-new title from acclaimed author GREG PAK (Darth Vader, Lilo & Stitch) and preternaturally gifted artist EDER MESSIAS (Sam Wilson: Captain America) brings readers back to where the dark magic first began - and reveals a disturbing new threat that the bickering brothers will have to face before they can return to hunting down the demon who killed their mother.t
In this first issue, the monster hunters must uncover the entity responsible for a series of mysterious fires in a decaying rust belt town - attacks that begin with a Windler Industries factory burning down, and then escalate to several Windler employees themselves going up in flames. But finding the malevolent force behind the otherworldly arsons may not be as straightforward as it might seem - especially once the suspiciously well-prepared CEO Steff Windler gets personally involved!
Featuring atmospherically arresting covers from CLAYTON CRAIN, DAVID COUSENS, and EDER MESSIAS, each issue of Supernatural also includes a special PHOTO cover showcasing the beloved cast of the hit show!

First time guest Jasmine Walls and returning guest Dozerdraws join Jimmy on the podcast to chat about The Last Session vol. 2: Rerolled. The Last Session vol. 1: Roll for Initiative was a fantastic graphic novel and it's great to see this world revisited, even if it's with a new cast of characters. Jasmine and Dozer are incredible creators and collaborators and it's great to hear them talk about the fun, but also the challenges, of this sequel. There were some issues with Jasmine's audio (the joys of podcasting!) so apologies if things seem a little choppy this episode, but this is definitely worth it.
From the Publisher:
Erika, Jacob, Marcelle and Damien have become popular online personas, each with a huge following on their corner of the internet. The only thing they have in common is that they used to be close friends until they drifted apart in high school, leaving their Dice & Deathtraps game unfinished. Now, four years later, their old game master Amina has reached out with a chance to reunite, save the community center that fostered their creativity, and finally finish their abandoned campaign. They have one night to do it, streaming to a live audience with tensions and old grudges on the rise. Can they mend their fraying friendship or will this last session cut their ties for good?

I can't believe I'm typing this, but this is the 400th episode of the Cryptid Creator Corner!!! For this very special 400th episode Jimmy chats with first time guest Meghan Fitzmartin about her and Lisa Sterle's new series with Boom Studios: Mary Sue. Issue 1 is out October 8th. Jimmy and Meghan chat about the origins of the term "Mary Sue", the value in fan fiction, how much of Meghan is in the character of Cassie, TV shows that were cancelled too soon, and, of course, Meghan's time in the Supernatural writer's room. Meghan penned the episodes "Peace of Mind" (Season 14) and "Drag Me Away (From You)" (Season 15).
From the Publisher:
Despite what her mom thinks, Cassie has lots of friends—they just all happen to be online, where she can talk to them about her beloved favorite show, Riverview, and get their feedback on her fan fic WIP, starring Jessica, her very own hot vampire OC.
But her fic writing persona is revealed to the entire school when her former best friend finds it and can’t resist reading some of it out loud to their classmates.
Cassie thinks things can’t get more humiliating, until her very own Mary Sue pops right out of her fic to save the day—or make it much, much worse.

If you find yourself at the center of the Venn diagram of comic book nerds and Shakespeare nerds, this is definitely the episode for you! Amy Chase returns to the podcast to talk about ABUZZ, her new Maverick graphic novel with artist Stelladia that is a modern retelling of Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing. I've had a chance to read an advanced copy and it's phenomenal! It's such a clever update and Stelladia's art is amazing. Plus ABUZZ is colored by Ellie Wright and lettered by Taylor Esposito. Amy talks about how she thought someone should make this book for a long time until she finally decided to do it herself. We talk about our love of Shakespeare, other adaptations of Much Ado, centering Claudio and Hero in the story, getting Bea and Ben's dialogue just right, and the importance of queer representation. This is such a great conversation. I know you're going to love it. ABUZZ is coming from Maverick on November 18th.
Order ABUZZ
From the Publisher:
Shakespeare’s beloved romcom Much Ado About Nothing gets a modern update with an LGBTQ cast and the same classic miscommunications! Feuding senior students Ben and Beatriz drag half of Messina High into their never-ending arguments, making things difficult as budding sweethearts Hero and Claudio are asked to pick sides in the battle. All the while, the bad kids, led by outcast DJ, are plotting to capitalize on the chaos and rule the school for themselves. With college letters and prom night on the horizon, will these students find their happy ending or feel the sting of total rejection?

I am so excited for folks to hear this episode. Matthew has been in comics for quite some time and has now made a second act (I think in the episode he says a 3rd act) to his career as an artist and writer of YA, Middle Grade, and Kids graphic novels. Matthew and I talk about the upcoming The October Girl from Maverick (out October 21st) that has been in Matthew's head since college. This graphic novel, which had an earlier life back in 2012, has been a long time coming. And let me tell you, it's fantastic, with a grounded main character in Autumn and her not so imaginary friend, Barnaby. Matthew and I talk about the story and its history. He also shares how he broke into comics and how the pandemic caused him to work more on his own stuff like Amelia Shadows, Johnny Chaos, and Arch Nemesis. Plus we chat about some of his favorite DC characters like Blue Devil. I loved chatting with Matthew and I think you're gonna love this episode.

Drawn into the strange and mysterious world of the Night Folk, fantastic creatures that inspired all of humanity’s myths about gods and monsters, Autumn is about to discover that there is more to her world than she ever dreamed of as a little girl, and that world is far more dangerous than she could ever have imagined. With the help of Barnaby and Evan Fade, the tragic young boy who inherited the local bookstore, Autumn has to protect herself from the coldly terrifying Mr. Balloon long enough to discover the truth about the Night Folk and her own past.

Ben Kahn and Rachel Silverstein join Jimmy to discuss Renegade Royale, the follow-up to Renegade Rule. Renegade Royale keeps picks up about a year later to see what Amanda, Sasha, Jessie, and Tonya have going on in their lives just as their favorite VR game announces a winner takes all battle royale mode. The follow-up continues to blend the amazing friendship of the 4 with humor, drama, and plenty of video game action. As the Dark Horse website says, this is a queer kickass gaming experience. Ben and Rachel discuss their influences, their writing process, trading one-liners, which character was the most fun to write and which character arc was the hardest to crack. Plus they chat about the importance of queer representation in comics. This is an awesome conversation about 2 awesome graphic novels.

Zac Thompson returns to the podcast for a deep dive into Into the Unbeing! Gear up because Zac and Jimmy are heading into the depths of the leviathan to talk about climate change in comics, writing characters with different perspectives, the batshit insane panel layouts that the incomparable Hayden Sherman employed, and what a pro Jim Campbell is. Into the Unbeing goes to some incredible places and it's a comic where each issue presents surprises and new ways to tell this story. This is an incredible conversation with Zac. He also talks about the follow-up to Cemetery Kids Don't Die, Cemetery Kids Run Rabid. Issue 1 is out August 13th. You can get volume 1 of Into the Unbeing right now. Volume 2 will be out through Dark Horse Comics on October 7th.
WHAT IS INTO THE UNBEING VOL. 2 ALL ABOUT:
For centuries, The UnBeing, a seemingly malevolent corpse, has swallowed all who dare tread near its sprawling mass. Now, the last survivors of a climate science team are trapped inside with only a mysterious humanoid known as The Stranger to guide them out. This incomprehensible Stranger claims to be a 19th Century British explorer. It claims to know the way back to the surface. It claims a new world is on its way. Perhaps if you listen closely, you can hear it breathing. But what is the cost of this new world? And who will be left to live in it?Picking up directly after the events of Part One, the remaining survivors form a distrustful and desperate team. Together they must journey across impossible landscapes and contend with their own changing biology in order to find their way back home. As their journey into the Unbeing deepens, the series’ most disturbing questions are answered… but the answers offer little comfort.

Sometimes a graphic novel comes along that is so good, as soon as I'm done reading it, I immediately read it again. That's what happened with Hello Sunshine, the newest graphic novel by Eisner and Ignatz-nominated cartoonist and illustrator Keezy Young. I first encountered Keezy's work when I read Sunflowers, an autobio comic about one person's experience living with bipolar disorder. I was blown away by how personal and intimate the comic was and reached out to Keezy to be on the podcast. They graciously agreed and sent me a copy of Hello Sunshine. It's an absolutely gorgeous hardcover, but the story and art in its pages may end up being the best graphic novel I've read in 2025. Keezy and I chat about Sunflowers and Hello Sunshine, the fine line they walk in telling this story of mental illness and the supernatural, the visual language of the comic, destygmatizing mental illness, their creative process, and the incredible lettering. You do not want to miss this episode.
WHAT IS HELLO SUNSHINE ALL ABOUT:
In this lush and romantic queer horror graphic novel, a troubled teen disappears from his small town—sending his loved ones on a paranormal journey to bring him home.Noah is heartbroken. He returns from Bible camp to find that Alex, his secret boyfriend, has had a breakdown and disappeared. He wishes more than anything that he hadn’t left that day. Sky is determined. She’ll stop at nothing to find her childhood friend, even if it means alienating the people she loves. Izzy is ashamed. She knew something weird was going on with Alex, and she didn’t say anything to her boyfriend, Jamie—Alex’s twin brother. If she had, would Alex still be here? Jamie is angry. Angry at Alex for being gone, angry at himself for not noticing something was wrong, and angry at his long-dead mother, Desdemona, who had problems of her own.But what if there was something more to Desdemona’s demons? Why is Jamie seeing her ghost? And can he get past his hatred of her if it means finding out what happened to his brother?

I love samurai, the code, the fashion, I mean, who doesn't so when I saw that comics writer/artist Ibrahim Moustafa was working on a samurai centric project, I immediately reached out to chat about it. After getting a look at the actual pages, it should come as no surprise that as an adept at blending genre, he's knocking it out of the park again with his forthcoming East meets West Humanoids project Halfblood funding soon on Kickstarter.
I get annoyed sometimes at the panel economization of fight choreography in comics as a daily martial arts practitioner, but was pleasantly surprised with how meticulously this was researched and executed . We chat about that, vampires, the white savior trope, and sculpting figurines which if you haven't checked out his YouTube channel, consider giving it a follow if sculpting or just collecting them is your thing.

“Do you believe in fate?” asks Senjuro, The Black Demon, to all those who cross his path. Victim or guide.
A masterless, mixed-race samurai, Senjuro skulks through the shadows of an evolving feudal Japan, seeking to serve...but the age of the Samurai flickers on the winds of modernization, and any work to be had is less than honorable. That is until Claire, a wealthy British explorer and anthropologist, swings through the tavern doors seeking aid from the man whose reputation precedes him; the one they call The Black Demon. Her family has just been monstrously slain and exsanguinated, and signs point to perpetrators beyond human. Along with Claire and her Sikh companion Jangveer, Senjuro the Black Demon must face hell on earth to deliver their reckoning, and in the process, find the honor he so desperately seeks.

Balazs Lorinczi returns to the podcast to talk about his newest graphic novel A Bite of Pepper. Balazs was last on the podcast to talk about Wolfpitch, which was a graphic novel I loved, so I was happy to have him back on to talk about A Bite of Pepper, which will be out on August 26th. Balazs and I chat about mixing vampires and skateboarding, the history of vampire lore, creating grounded characters, and pivoting during the editing process when you're faced with the possibility of having to rework completed pages. A Bite of Pepper is another fantastic graphic novel and it was a blast to chat with Balazs again. I love his approach to character and storytelling. WHAT'S A BITE OF PEPPER ALL ABOUT?
A skateboarding vampire falls for a human artist as they combine their talents to create a skating brand in this lightly paranormal coming-of-age young adult graphic novel romance for fans of Squad by Maggie Tokuda-Hall and The Girl from the Sea.
Pepper Mint might be born a vampire, but she’s pretty much your average teenager who loves skateboarding and her dog. What she doesn’t love is her mother’s continuous efforts to find her a vampire bride so that she can become fully immortal. Then Pepper meets Ana—she’s a charming art student, a part-time waitress…and interested in Pepper.
Ana’s presence changes everything, especially when she uses Pepper for the inspiration behind her art. But the two girls’ instant chemistry seems to provide the perfect opportunity for Pepper to finally commit to becoming the immortal creature of the night her mother desperately wants her to be.
Between the pressure from her mom and her inability to figure out whether Ana likes Pepper for herself or her aesthetic, it feels like everyone just wants a bite of Pepper. And with all these looming questions, will Pepper be ready to take the biggest bite of her life, committing to an unchanging immortality?

As regular listeners will know, I spent seven years living in the greater Puget Sound area and despite having lived in eight different states, it’s one of two places that will always be home to me. There’s something about small Washington State towns that can feel delightfully out of time and there’s no greater contrast to them than the technology centric hub that is Seattle crowned by its futuristic Space Needle. It elicits a range of complex emotions as a former local that the visitor will never understand primary among them is a clash between modern advancement and the struggle of smaller coastal communities to hold onto their ways of life and cultural identities. This was my personal filter going into reading The Stoneshore Register, a delightful new graphic novel from Dark Horse Comics and I have the perfect person to hang out to tell us all about it, first time guest G. Willow Wilson.
Yes, I do go off on a bit of a tangent about gardening but we'll call that a Poison Ivy interlude, and we wrap things up covering what we can expect to see in Marvel's new ongoing Black Cat series.

When refugee and aspiring journalist Fadumo arrives to work at the Stoneshore Register, she is entering a far stranger place than she realizes.
At first, the colossal stone giant overlooking the rundown, seemingly ordinary Pacific Northwest fishing town seems like the only remarkable element. But he is not the only strange surprise: changelings, selkies, cursed ships—the bizarre has a home in Stoneshore, yet no one gives it a second thought.
But Fadumo doesn't just want to cover these odd occurrences. She wants to dig deeper. And what she discovers is a land so steeped in mysterious history, it will change all who dare to explore it.

You might not think digital coloring brushes screams excitement—but hear me out. The Last Band On Earth is hands-down one of my surprise sleeper hits of 2025, and I’m psyched to welcome first-time guest Elaine M. Will onto the show. We’re diving into her process, geeking out over digital brushes, and pulling back the curtain on her eerie, hilarious, and heartfelt new graphic novel chock full of demons and tentacles.
Elaine, creator of the Xeric Award–winning Look Straight Ahead, has a knack for highlighting the struggles of mental health using a unique combination of horror and humor storytelling in her work and this was no exception. Having spent over fifteen years in the trenches with bands, I know the depressive shadow that can follow musicians around and I'm delighted to get a chance to expose more people to it through highlighting this book.

The Last Band On Earth
Synopsis
The Last Band On Earth, my third graphic novel, tells the story of The Dead Layaways, a noise rock band trapped in a semi-post-apocalyptic city ruled by demons. The band wishes to leave the city so they can tour whatever might be left of the world, but the demon overlords insist there are miles of untraversable wasteland surrounding the city in all directions, and anyone attempting to leave will die. Better to stay put, where it’s safe.
Except...it’s not safe at all. There are strange demonic creatures roaming the streets, empty grocery shelves, and a general feeling of malaise and existential dread hanging in the air at all times. This anhedonia only seems to intensify the longer one remains in the city. After an unexpected personal tragedy/setback, the band decides they have nothing left to lose, and they must strike out into the unknown.
From here, we begin a liminal horror road movie about fighting both literal and metaphorical demons...
In addition to the mental health themes, Last Band On Earth is also a book about trying to survive as a creative person in a world that is actively hostile towards you.

From the shared genius of Christopher Cantwell (Iron Man, Doctor Doom) and Victor Santos (Polar, Violent Love) comes an all-new Kid Maroon graphic novel, featuring the rich history of Pep Shepard's beloved boy detective, including strips long considered lost to time. Two years ago, Walden Maroon outgrew his small town, his loving parents, and the low stakes mysteries involving missing butterflies and stolen cookies. Since then, he's dwelled within the cesspit of Crimeville, where murders, vice, and corruption are the city's bread and butter. But at 12 years old, Kid is weary. When a string of horrific killings and arsons spring up in the streets, can he crack the case with his quick wits and slingshot? Or does Kid Maroon secretly yearn for what he's never gotten to be... a kid?

I don’t fanboy often, but I’m making an exception for today’s guest. When Jesse Lonergan was last on the show, he was talking about Man’s Best with co-creator Pornsak Pichetshote. Back then, I had no idea who he was. That changed instantly.
Jesse is back to talk about Drome, his new graphic novel and one of my favorite books of 2025. I can already guarantee it’ll land on my year-end awards list, I’m just not sure which category yet.
Drome is a singular reading experience, packed with some of the most innovative and intricate panel layouts I’ve ever seen. It even hijacked my dreams the night I read it. If you’re into ambitious, boundary-pushing comics, don’t miss this deep-dive conversation with one of the most creative storytellers in the medium. And be sure to grab a copy of Drome so you can say you loved it before the awards started rolling in.

Jesse Lonergan rewrites the rules of graphic novels with Drome, a visually mind-blowing epic about war, love, and death in a fledgling world.First, there was nothing. Then, humanity was born, and an endless cycle of violence began. From the depths of the ocean, a mighty demigoddess is called forth to rein in humankind’s destructive impulses, and teach a language of peace and harmony. Civilization quickly takes root, a great city rising from the desert. But the balance between chaos and order is a fragile one, and there are higher powers at work in this strange new world.Creator Jesse Lonergan pushes the boundaries of the comics medium in this visually spectacular epic. In turns pulse-pounding and heart-wrenching, Drome is a creation myth for the modern age.

Today’s episode is a first for the show—we’re joined by an Oscar nominee! Michael Grover, also a Harvey and Eisner Award nominee, sits down to talk about his genre-defying webcomic Deeply Dave, which is being collected into a vertical format graphic novel with Henry Holt.
As a longtime fan, I was eager to learn how he’s adapting such a multimedia-rich experience—complete with GIFs, music, and animation—into print form. We also dive into his upcoming project Jake Spooky and the Wolves Within Him, where, you guessed it, werewolves take center stage. I can't help myself with the werewolf projects.
Michael’s work pushes the boundaries of what comics can be, and if you’re interested in the future of storytelling, you won’t want to miss this conversation.
