Description

Digital technology constantly develops and influences fully in our lives. Nowadays you can find anything and get any service through the internet. For example, I usually use different services to find a high-quality author who prepares college essays for sale. Technology and digital media have changed even reading processes. It has been recorded that people who read digital books read more than those who read in print. However, is this a victory? The fact that more people read more does not necessarily mean that they have more knowledge. And it also does not mean that the content has been understood.

The brain and written language

Reading is usually thought of as an activity that involves mainly abstraction (imagination, formation of ideas). However, several studies have shown that the brain detects and processes letters as physical objects. The way it recognizes letters is the same way it recognizes between an apple or a pear.

Likewise, it has been discovered that when reading in printed format, the brain creates a kind of mental map of the text referring to its physical structure. The brain relates a specific part of the story to a physical location. For example, the corners of the book, the thickness of the pages read the height at which the sentences are, etc.

On the other hand, when reading in digital, this does not happen. There is no reference of pages read and missing. Just as there is no record of the location of sentences when scrolling to change pages, this impedes the study. It is believed that screens, by limiting physical and tangible navigation, also limit comprehension.

A study at Stavanger University in Norway looked at comprehension when studying with physical and digital books. It was observed that those who used physical books to study did better on exams. At the same time, those who studied with e-books scored lower. The result was attributed precisely because the paper provides Spatio-temporal markers that serve as references for memory. Therefore, it is concluded that printed books are easier to assimilate.

The joy of reading

As more studies are conducted, it becomes clearer that you have more excellent retention of information when reading in print. But what about the subjective opinion of readers?

Multiple studies and surveys around the world have shown that:

  • People who read an e-book and like it a lot buy it in print.

  • People like to have control of underlining and writing on the edges of the paper. At the same time, this is a rare practice in digital formats.

  • If you want to read in-depth and understand clearly, the printed format is preferred.

  • The sale of e-books demonstrates a preference of society towards digital. However, it is a fact that print has the advantage both cognitively and in personal taste. Perhaps that is why digital reading devices try so hard to emulate paper.
