You already know about the risks of cybercriminals tricking victims into handing over money or installing malware – but cybersecurity company Gen Digital is warning people to be aware of a surge in so-called ‘scam-yourself attacks’ that are catching millions off guard. In a scam-yourself attack, cybercriminals use social engineering and psychological manipulation to trick you into willingly installing malicious software on your work device. You might, for example, be watching a video tutorial on YouTube that tells you to download a free version of paid software, which actually has malware embedded. “Clickfix scams” pretend to help you fix a computer issue, but guide you through a series of command prompts that give cybercriminals control of your system. Fake CAPTCHA prompts can install dangerous code onto your clipboard and prompt you to install it on your devices, while malware disguised as a necessary software update may guide you to paste malicious scripts into your system. These scams are everywhere – with Gen reporting that they increased by 614% in the last quarter alone. As always, be vigilant and trust nothing that you find online, that you can’t independently verify or corroborate. The 60-second "Security Nudge" is brought to you by CybSafe, developers of the Human Risk Management Platform. Learn more at https://cybsafe.com
