It’s way too early to know who the conference champions will be during the 2025-2026 Division II basketball season but that won’t keep us from trying to guess! We’re back with year three of our conference champions draft contest with the usual suspects of Karl Barkley, Bob Quillman and Ryan Whitnable joining us to go through eight rounds of picks. Each conference can only be picked once so once someone makes their pick of a team to be a conference champ, that conference is off the board. Five contestants making eight picks each means 40 of the 42 conferences will factor into the picks while two will be left on the board. Also going without a pick will be the Coast-To-Coast Conference because they do not have official conference regular season play.We follow up the draft with some talk about our thoughts on the overall landscape informed by our draft prep and other relevant topics as we look forward to another great season.Related Links:Karl Barkley on X: https://x.com/d3directBob Quillman on X: https://x.com/BQuillmanQcastRyan Whitnable on X: https://x.com/OACBBallShowEfficiency Ratings: https://d3datacast.com/efficiency-ratings/NPI Rankings: https://d3datacast.com/npi/Show Links:▶ Website: https://d3datacast.com/▶ Subscribe to the channel: https://www.youtube.com/@d3datacast▶ Follow on Twitter: https://twitter.com/d3datacast▶ Follow on Facebook: https://facebook.com/d3datacast▶ Follow on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/1twRPsVN00cCOxnFMldaw1?si=96c775bee5904b8e▶ Become our Teammate on Patreon: https://patreon.com/D3Datacast▶ D3 Datacast Merch: https://www.bonfire.com/store/d3-datacast/Show hosts:Matt Snyder: https://twitter.com/FFTMAGZac Snyder: https://twitter.com/ZacSnyder

It’s time to declare the Division III basketball offseason over and start looking at the season ahead! We fired up the D3 Datacast computer for another season of hoops and kick off the return of our weekly shows taking a look at preseason efficiency ratings. New and improved for this season, our men’s basketball preseason efficiency ratings are calculated with the computer having the added “knowledge” of transfers and returning production.Join us for this episode as we take a look at the preseason efficiency ratings that will serve as the basis for the season while the computer adjusts to the new season over each team’s first eight games. We review the preseason Top 40 picture, focus in on some big movers from last season’s final ratings, and make our picks of some teams we think might outperform or underperform their preseason numbers.Related Links:Scott Peterson on X: https://x.com/scott_peterson4Scott Peterson’s D3 Stat Lab: https://thed3statlab.com/Riley Zayas on X: https://x.com/ZayasRileyRiley Zayas’ Substack: https://d3wbbscoop.substack.com/Efficiency Ratings: https://d3datacast.com/efficiency-ratings/NPI Rankings: https://d3datacast.com/npi/Show Links:▶ Website: https://d3datacast.com/▶ Subscribe to the channel: https://www.youtube.com/@d3datacast▶ Follow on Twitter: https://twitter.com/d3datacast▶ Follow on Facebook: https://facebook.com/d3datacast▶ Follow on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/1twRPsVN00cCOxnFMldaw1?si=96c775bee5904b8e▶ Become our Teammate on Patreon: https://patreon.com/D3Datacast▶ D3 Datacast Merch: https://www.bonfire.com/store/d3-datacast/Show hosts:Matt Snyder: https://twitter.com/FFTMAGZac Snyder: https://twitter.com/ZacSnyder
Our NPI summer series wraps up with Fact or Fiction! In this episode we feature five prompts about NPI and answer whether they are based on fact or fiction fueled by a misconception or misunderstanding.NPI doesn’t consider head-to-head? NPI doesn’t count every game? NPI gives everyone an at-large chance? The different non-conference multiplier in men’s basketball is a good idea? More teams still have an outside shot at a tournament bid going into the final week of the season? Are these things fact or fiction? Join us for this episode as we give our answer and the discussion that follows as we conclude the offseason. We will be back October 6 as the show returns to a weekly format in the leadup into and throughout the 2025-2026 Division III basketball season.Related Episodes:Did NPI Pick the Right Teams? - Episode 114: https://youtu.be/FZK-_qKO1CUNon-D3 Games in the NPI Era - Episode 115: https://youtu.be/I0H7dyrNw0MDoes NPI Give Everyone an At-Large Chance? - Episode 116: https://youtu.be/h3xDMiblEqIRelated Links:Efficiency Ratings: https://d3datacast.com/efficiency-ratings/NPI Rankings: https://d3datacast.com/npi/Show Links:▶ Website: https://d3datacast.com/▶ Subscribe to the channel: https://www.youtube.com/@d3datacast▶ Follow on Twitter: https://twitter.com/d3datacast▶ Follow on Facebook: https://facebook.com/d3datacast▶ Follow on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/1twRPsVN00cCOxnFMldaw1?si=96c775bee5904b8e▶ Become our Teammate on Patreon: https://patreon.com/D3Datacast▶ D3 Datacast Merch: https://www.bonfire.com/store/d3-datacast/Show hosts:Matt Snyder: https://twitter.com/FFTMAGZac Snyder: https://twitter.com/ZacSnyder
We have seen how NPI opens up tournament consideration to a wider set of Division III men’s basketball teams than the previous regional ranking/committee selection system - but does NPI actually give every team a chance at an at-large tournament berth?Observers of the previous system know that it seemed some teams with poor SOS numbers just couldn’t win enough to overcome it. With NPI we can run scenarios and get direct answers without having to guess how the human members of the RACs or National Committee might view a particular resume. In this episode we take a look at two cases from last season of teams that ranked with the worst two strengths of schedule according to NPI to see if there is a point at which they enter the at-large picture if enough losses were turned to wins. The results might be surprising, and do they have implications for how a team should put together their schedule? From time to time we see Division III basketball programs play games against non-D3 opponents. With NPI taking over as the way teams at-large teams are selected and the national tournament is seeded, are non-D3 games good or bad? As it seems with anything NPI-related the answer is: it depends! There are many considerations to be made when putting together a basketball schedule. In this entry into our NPI summer series we talk through two scenarios in which it could be good (or at least OK) to play a non-D3 opponent and two scenarios in which it is bad to play a game outside the division.Related Episodes:Did NPI Pick the Right Teams? - Episode 114: https://youtu.be/FZK-_qKO1CURelated Links:Efficiency Ratings: https://d3datacast.com/efficiency-ratings/NPI Rankings: https://d3datacast.com/npi/Show Links:▶ Website: https://d3datacast.com/▶ Subscribe to the channel: https://www.youtube.com/@d3datacast▶ Follow on Twitter: https://twitter.com/d3datacast▶ Follow on Facebook: https://facebook.com/d3datacast▶ Follow on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/1twRPsVN00cCOxnFMldaw1?si=96c775bee5904b8e▶ Become our Teammate on Patreon: https://patreon.com/D3Datacast▶ D3 Datacast Merch: https://www.bonfire.com/store/d3-datacast/Show hosts:Matt Snyder: https://twitter.com/FFTMAGZac Snyder: https://twitter.com/ZacSnyder
The first Division III men's basketball tournament with at-large teams selected by NPI is in the books. We got a great tournament but did NPI pick the right teams?Join us for this episode as we look at the results NPI produced for teams in and around the bubble and compare and contrast that to how some other rating and ranking systems might have picked the limited number of at-large bids to the 2025 tournament. The second weekend of the 2025 NCAA Division III men’s basketball tournament saw favorites bounce-back after underdogs out-performed the D3 Datacast computer expectation in rounds one and two. The second weekend of the tournament saw a lot of chalk but that doesn’t mean we didn’t still get a bunch of great games. That’s two weekends down with just one weekend to go. The focus of the Division III men’s basketball world shifts to Fort Wayne, Indiana as just Wesleyan, NYU, Trinity (CT) and WashU remain. A NESCAC-UAA final is guaranteed with the semifinals determining whether it will be Wesleyan or Trinity (CT) taking on NYU or WashU. The stretch run of this Division III basketball season is playing out a little differently with the change from the old regional ranking system to the new NPI. As this would have been the week we got the first set of fully ranked regional rankings, we take a look at how those regional rankings might have looked this week under the old criteria. How would those regional rankings have slotted teams into the national picture? How do they compare to the rankings we’re getting with NPI? Has the move to NPI led to distinct “winners” and “losers” and does it look like an overall better toolset? All that and more in what should be a great show for anyone who would have preferred a year of NPI alongside the old familiar system rather than the abrupt change in how teams will be selected and seeded for the NCAA Tournament. We also look back at how we did against our week 15 picks slate and make our decisions on a new five-game slate for week 16 picks, then wrap up with a check in with our viewers in the mailbag.Related Episodes:What Every D3 Basketball Fan Needs To Know About NPI - Episode 101: https://youtu.be/gqYqgCoG8aARelated Links:Efficiency Ratings: https://d3datacast.com/efficiency-ratings/Daily Score Predictions: https://d3datacast.com/efficiency-ratings/score-predictions/NPI: https://d3datacast.com/npi/NPI Projection/Simulations: https://d3datacast.com/npi/mbb-projections/Show Links:▶ Website: https://d3datacast.com/▶ Subscribe to the channel:https://www.youtube.com/@d3datacast▶ Follow on Twitter: https://twitter.com/d3datacast▶ Follow on Facebook: https://facebook.com/d3datacast▶ Follow on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/1twRPsVN00cCOxnFMldaw1?si=96c775bee5904b8e▶ Become our Teammate on Patreon: https://patreon.com/D3Datacast▶ D3 Datacast Merch: https://www.bonfire.com/store/d3-datacast/Show hosts:Matt Snyder: https://twitter.com/FFTMAGZac Snyder: https://twitter.com/ZacSnyder
After another terrific week of the 2024-2025 Division III men’s basketball season it’s time to check in on the developing picture as the NCAA Tournament draws nearer. It’s hard to believe just three weeks remain until the national tournament and there is a lot of important jockeying for position yet to play out. With the help of the D3 Datacast computer running simulations to play out the final weeks 1,000 times, we take a look at the race for the top eight protected seeds, the top 16 seed that will put themselves in position to host opening weekend pods, and how the bubble picture is taking shape, especially within the context of results from this past week.As an added bonus, Matt takes the top projected seeds and shows how the top eight are likely to be placed in the bracket and how the rest of top 16 could be slotted and selected for hosting opportunities. New bracketing principles in place for this year make those top eight seed particularly important so be sure to understand what “protection” these teams will receive. We also look back at how we did against our week 14 picks slate and make our decisions on a new five-game slate for week 15 picks, then wrap up with a check in with our viewers in the mailbag.Related Episodes:What Every D3 Basketball Fan Needs To Know About NPI - Episode 101:https://youtu.be/gqYqgCoG8aARelated Links:Efficiency Ratings:https://d3datacast.com/efficiency-ratings/Daily Score Predictions:https://d3datacast.com/efficiency-ratings/score-predictions/NPI:https://d3datacast.com/npi/NPI Projection/Simulations:https://d3datacast.com/npi/mbb-projections/Show Links:▶ Website: https://d3datacast.com/▶ Subscribe to the channel:https://www.youtube.com/@d3datacast▶ Follow on Twitter:https://twitter.com/d3datacast▶ Follow on Facebook:https://facebook.com/d3datacast▶ Follow on Spotify:https://open.spotify.com/show/1twRPsVN00cCOxnFMldaw1?si=96c775bee5904b8e▶ Become our Teammate on Patreon:https://patreon.com/D3Datacast▶ D3 Datacast Merch:https://www.bonfire.com/store/d3-datacast/Show hosts:Matt Snyder:https://twitter.com/FFTMAGZac Snyder:https://twitter.com/ZacSnyder
The calendar turning to February marks the start of the Division III basketball season stretch run. Teams are locked in to the conference races and doing all they can to secure an automatic qualifying bid to the 2025 NCAA Division III men’s basketball tournament but all but one team per conference will fall short of that goal. That leaves just 21 at-large bids up for grabs.
Which teams are real contenders to receive an at-large bid should they need it and which are going at risk of seeing their bubble burst? How teams perform over the last few weeks of the season will ultimately determine that but with the help of the D3 Datacast computer running 1,000 simulations we can get a feel for how likely each team is to get into the tournament should they need to rely on an at-large bid to do so.
This week’s show kicks off our bubble watch where we categorize teams as locks, solid, bubble-in, bubble-out or probably out based on how often they secure at-large bids when necessary over the course of 1,000 rest of season simulations.
We also look back at how we did against our week 13 picks slate and make our decisions on a new five-game slate for week 14 picks, then wrap up with a check in with our viewers in the mailbag.

We are deep into the Division III men’s basketball season but if you think that means we’re gaining any clarity into the Top 25 picture, think again! This week we go deep into Matt’s Top 25 ballot then go a step further by taking a look at his next 25. Which teams are just off the ballot and do these next 25 teams have anything in common? We break it down and talk through it all.
Top 25 consideration may be nice but it’s really position within the NPI rankings that teams are fighting over. We follow up our Top 25/next 25 discussion with an explanation of why the final NPI Top 8 is so important and what it will mean for teams that earn those coveted spots.
We also look back at how we did against our week 12 picks slate and make our decisions on a new five-game slate for week 13 picks, then wrap up with a check in with our viewers in the mailbag.
