Dj Spinna Tribute To Kashif Mix (RIP)!!!

Harlem born, Brooklyn bred, orphaned by adolescence & self proclaimed prodigy by his teenaged years, Michael Jones PKA Kashif Saleem's story is that of a miracle. By the age of 16 he joined & toured with B.T. Express. After a two album stint with the band he was let go as a result of his overly ambitious work ethic - he outpaced the band's expectations. Without hesitation Kashif surpassed being a session musician thrusting into an active music career acting as producer, arranger, composer & performer for future stars & established artists including Whitney Houston, Evelyn Champagne King, Fatback Band, Melba Moore, Average White Band, George Benson & Bill Withers. Kashif played an integral role in shaping the New York post-disco R&B sound, & heralded what many today label Boogie & Modern Soul music. He kept R&B progressive, dance floor friendly & edgy throughout the early 80's by embracing the latest technology - drums machines and synthesizers. I had the honor of meeting him many moons ago through one of my music mentors who grew up with him in Brooklyn. Although it was only a day's worth of interactions in my home studio, the visit was quite impactful to say the least. His wisdom and experience in the music industry was impressionable on my ambitious mind. His music raised me, the sound of Kashif highly influenced my sound as a producer. His debut solo album is in my top 10 favorite R&B records of all time. I practically learned how to mix by practicing with records like "Love Come Down", "So Fine" & "I Just Got To Have You". He was an amazing artist & human being. I can't believe he's gone but the music will surely live on. Kashif was a true innovator, scholar, humanitarian & master of music. May his soul rest in peace! TRACKLIST 1. Mingo Weya - Kashif 2. You Give Good Love - Whitney Houston 3. Are You The Woman - Kashif 4. Dancing In The Dark - Kashif 5. Live In Me - June Pointer 6. Right On Time - Tavares 12. Wouldn't You Like To Fly - Victor Fields 13. It Ain't Because Of Me Baby - Bill Withers 14. Take You To Heaven - Change 15. The Mood - Kashif 16. Dj Spinna Sade Mix

Made this mix a few years ago in honor of the sultry songstress Sade. I've been a fan ever since Smooth Operator dropped. I remember having a little crush on her watching her videos on Video Music Box, a legendary local New York video show that aired the best of rap, r&b, and dance videos. I got a suprising call to open up for her a couple years ago in Atlantic City for a concert, but unfortunately it didn't pan out. I was so hyped on meeting her. Anyway, Happy 54th Birthday Sade. Enjoy the vibes!

Happy Birthday Marvin Gaye Part Two.

Happy 76th Birthday Marvin Gaye! Here's the sequel to the Marvin B-Day mix I did two years ago. Sorry I took so long to get this done but I believe the length of this one will make up for lost time. This mix is almost two hours long and filled with burners. Classics, a few unheard remixes and reworks by my brother Kenny Dope, John Morales Salaam Remi and myself, unreleased nuggets of some thangs and rare album cuts, singles and alternate takes of other thangs. I even snuck in Donny Hathaway's version of "What's Going On" as it's probably my favorite Marvin cover of all time. Spread the word!... Enjoy, Love, MARVIN!!! SPINNA

Journey Sunday Sessions - All Vinyl Episode One

What's up fam, Sometimes it's hard for me to wrap my head around the fact that we're living in such a virtual world when it comes to music, especially new music. I don't want to believe that I'm just some kind of old school fool that can't get over my vinyl addiction. I have friends who downsized their record collections due to space which is understandable, but for those with space, the idea of wanting to convert their entire collection to digital and then ridding themselves of the wax is inconceivable to me. I don't get it! On the contrary, I love Serato. It allows for the traveling DJ to have their library with them at all times, ready for any situation. Sometimes though, I get lost in that digital realm and I miss the feeling of digging in the record boxes and identifying music by labels and artwork. Before using Serato it was even worse for me with CD's. Carrying up to three books or more of CD's with a gang of typed up track listings all over the place. CD's going bad on you due to wear and tear, and constantly having to rip and burn new music all the time. Plus for me, being a multi genre DJ, you could never have all your music with you using CD's. It became a nightmare! Life seemed much simpler when it was just wax. Vinyl is still the best sounding format. It's the original way music is supposed to be heard. There's a human element to it. It makes sense that when the needle reacts from those microscopic wiggly lines in the grooves and those subs in the speaker boxes tremble in response, your body moves accordingly. It's all physics, it's all physical. I love music. I have to get it any way I can. If I purchase a download of a particular song that becomes available on wax, I'll still buy the wax if I really love the song. I gotta feel it. This mix is an all vinyl edition. Not a single mp3, aiff or wav file used. My laptop was disconnected. Every record in the mix was purchased from one of the last standing record stores in Brooklyn New York, Dope Jams. Luckily for me it's in my hood... well being the addict that I am I'm not sure if that's a good thing, (pause). You can check them out at Dopejams.net. They also do mail order. If you're an open minded progressive thinker, you'll love their selection. I even got some killer sought after classics in their used record bins, one of them being the last track in this mix. I'm thankful that some artists, producers and label owners still consider vinyl a viable format. It doesn't sell as much as it used to years ago, but obviously there are other people in the world who share my sentiments. Listen to the words spoken by Nathaniel X on the first track in the mix. My feelings are the same brother, wherever you are! Long live the underground. I don't usually like doing track listings but I'm making the exception this time to support the vinyl cause! Peace, Spinna. Title/Artist/EP Title (where available) 1. Gotta Get Over 2010 - Jer & Iz - Nathanial X Project 2. In My System - The Gathering 3. Track 4 - Kerri Chandler - Core 1994 4. Happy Birthday Marvin Gaye Part One

Marvin Pentz Gaye Jr. (April 2, 1939 – April 1, 1984) The whole world knows that I'm a huge Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson and Prince buff. But the other beast of a soul artist that I love to death is Marvin Gaye, of course! His music deeply expresses the soul of a man. The most bewildering thing about Marvin that I've come to understand more in my adult years is how he was able express his life experiences so artistically despite all his traumatic upheaval. I mean, his pops was a cross dressing preacher that practically despised his own son. I'll never forget the day I found out his dad took him out, the day before his birthday! I couldn't understand it and I was sad as hell. But life is wild that way. All that pain he endured led to greatness. Check these two youtube clips. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vUfsI9jJr_I&feature=related (Tom Joyner interview) The most honest interview I think I've ever seen an artist do while they're STILL dealing with their issues, not after. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AZ9FViYsDQA His dad was illmatic! And a suggested read... Divided Soul: The Life Of Marvin Gaye by David Ritz (who actually co wrote Sexual Healing) This book will change your life and have you paying more attention to Marvin's lyrics. I guarantee it! I grew up with his music like so many so I thought it was only right to bless the world with a mix. Included here here in this first episode are some rare releases, B-sides, alternate versions, exclusive re-edits and remixes courtesy of myself and some legendary dj/producer friends. More Marvin heat to come shortly... Enjoy

Dj Spinna Live at the Hudson Hotel 11-16-09

Here's a short 40 minute clip of me rocking at the New York Hudson Hotel for Giant Step. There was magic in the air that evening. Can't really explain it. I think it must have been the energy of the people that were there, most of them being familiar faces of the club scene from the past 3 decades. I wish I had more of that night but my recorder was filled with other recordings I had not backed up yet. Enjoy while it lasts. Thanks for listening.

Larry Levan Dedication Part 1

Here's a mix of some of my personal favorite Larry Levan remixes and productions. Many people in the dance community already understand the role that Larry had on shaping the New York club culture via the legendary Paradise Garage which lasted a little over a decade. I was fortunate enough to experience Larry's magic in the G the year the club came to an end in 1987. You could only get in as a member and luckily one of the older members on my block was able to make it happen for me. I was in my teens and it literally changed my life forever. I caught that bug...It's something that's embedded in your soul for an eternity. I sometimes hear from older members that I should have been around when he was really on fire in the earlier days, but 1987 was good enough for me. The sound system alone was something that I have yet to see duplicated. You could feel the bass in your chest. I remember riding home on the train feeling like I had gone deaf. My ears never rang again like it did that sunday afternoon. I grew up listening to his music mainly on WBLS via Frankie Crocker and Tony Humphries in the early 80s' and I have memories of going to my local record store in the neighborhood to buy jams like 'Let's Go Dancin'' by Sparque and I got 'My Mind Made Up' by Instant Funk, both included in this session. As a New Yorker and anyone living in New York in the 80's you couldn't really avoid Larry's work. Some of his work even infiltrated the hip hop world via samples with records like 'Heartbeat' by Taana Gardner, '7th Heaven' used in Biggie's 'Friend of Mine' and Central Line's 'Walking Into Sunshine' used in the classic LL Cool J/Marley Marl remix of 'Jingling Baby.' Some call it Boogie, some say Disco, and some Garage but at the end of the day it's straight up good music that you can dance to and enjoy, period! This is part one, more to come shortly. Uno, Spinna

Journey XM radio show, 6/23/08

Here's hour one from my short lived XM radio show called Journey of 2008. The show only lasted for four months before the merging of XM and Sirius Satellite radio, which resulted in the dance channel 80 being dropped. Oh well, I guess underground house music is not regarded as a commercially viable genre but real heads know where to find it. I've archived every episode and will be posting what I consider my stellar moments from time to time. Long live the underground. Enjoy...S
