What comes next, Greek fisher Evgenia asks. Five kilos of fish at three euros a kilo makes 15 euros per day. How can you make a living from it? Evgenia Floris asks herself this question every day. For over 50 years, she and her husband have been fishing on the Greek island of Chios. Although there are fewer and fewer fish now, the Evgenia and Georgios still keep going, because the sea is their life. They used to catch around ten to 20 kilos of fish off Chios in the past, which brought them in a good income. Today it’s no longer enough to live on: sometimes they can’t even afford fuel for their boat. State controls in Greece are virtually non-existent. What resemblance do today’s ethnonationalistic ideologies bear to those of the rise of the Nazis during Weimar-era? Quite a lot, this documentary shows. Germany’s far-right neo-nazi scene is now bigger than at any time since National Socialism. History may not repeat itself, but one can still learn from it. The years of the Weimar Republic were scarred by post-war trauma, political extremism, street fighting, hyper-inflation and widespread poverty. But they also saw economic boom, the establishment of a liberal democratic order and a parliamentary party system. Nobody could really imagine that the Nazis would brush aside the achievements of this young democracy just a few years later. But there were signs, warnings even that all was not well. So how does that resonate today? How do today’s right-wing populist movements and parties achieve their political aims? Which slogans, images and stereotypes played a role then, and which ones are playing a role now? The film also looks beyond Germany’s borders. How has Europe changed in the last few years and how have far-right movements been able to gain such influence? In the interwar period, democracies across the continent collapsed one after the other like a house of cards. What about today? Riding on the coat-tails of the political party the Alternative for Germany (AfD) the far-right has become a factor in both national and state parliaments, united by nationalist and often racist ideologies directly linked to those of the 1930s. At that time, global economic crisis and mass unemployment drove people straight into the fascists’arms. So what will happen if crisis strikes now? Are our democracies and their achievements today any more stable than they were in the years before the Second World War?

Huge areas of tropical rainforest are being destroyed to make charcoal for barbecues. The global deforestation is leading to growing problems. Nigeria and the DRC Congo - two of Europe’s main charcoal suppliers - are also affected. Every year, Europeans use approximately 800,000 tons of charcoal for barbecuing. Seventy percent of the charcoal comes from outside the EU, and the bags often contain remnants of tropical woods. Officially, tropical woods are subject to strict import conditions. But when it comes to wood charcoal, these do not apply. Worldwide, 2.7 billion people cook and heat with wood or charcoal. The related emission of greenhouse gases is enormous. 55 percent of global wood is used as fuel per year, and much of it is cut illegally in Africa’s bush and tropical forests. Nigeria produces most of its charcoal for export. Especially during dry periods, local Nigerian farmers use coal production as a lifeline to make money and feed their families. At the same time, charcoal mills travel the countryside in family groups, charring all the trees they can cut down. The consequences are hair-raising. Nigeria lost 36 percent of its forests between 1990 and 2005. At present, twelve percent of the country is still covered with forest - but charcoal production continues to rise, eating up 350,000 hectares of fertile land here every year. According to the UN, charcoal production is one of the main causes of deforestation in Africa, which in turn is closely linked to massive deterioration in soil quality and a growing risk of crop failure. But African legislation has been slow to respond to the problem. The coal business is highly lucrative business, and rakes in some 7.4 billion US Dollars a year. Anti-Semitism is on the rise in France and the country's Jews feel increasingly threatened. After attacks on Jewish institutions and Jewish life, many feel abandoned by the state. A retired Jewish policeman wants to change that. Anti-Semitic crimes in France are on the rise. The French government says the number of anti-Semitic attacks rose by almost 70 percent in the first nine months of 2018. But Samy Ghozlan, known in France as the Kosher Cop, is no longer prepared to stand idly by and watch. The former policeman is himself Jewish and has been attacked several times. A few years ago, he emigrated to Israel out of fear for his family. But the fight against anti-Semitism in his homeland constantly draws him back to Paris, where he has set up an organization to identify and counter anti-Semitism as well as help the victims when no one else will. Like Stella, for example: after being attacked in her apartment and having her car smeared with Stars of David, she fled her home on the outskirts of Paris and moved to another part of the city. Ghozlan, who knows many Jews who are leaving the suburbs because they no longer feel safe there, talks about a "new anti-Semitism.” In the past, the perpetrators were mainly right-wing extremists, but today many attacks are carried out by Muslims. But Ghozlan also has the support of his friend Hassen Chalghoumi, a Paris Imam who speaks openly about anti-Semitism among French Muslims. There are over 45 million slaves worldwide today - more than ever before in human history. Modern slavery has many faces: workers, sex slaves, household servants and child soldiers. But some people are fighting this trade in human misery. The documentary investigates the modern slave trade and tracks down the unscrupulous profiteers for whom people are a mere commodity. For 30 years, the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) has been waging a guerrilla war along the borders of Uganda, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Sudan. The UN estimates it has abducted and enslaved some 100,000 children in that time. Caesar Acellam was number three in the LRA hierarchy. He talks to filmmaker Marc Wiese and takes the viewer into the dark world of the LRA. But there are also people ready to oppose modern slavery. Australian billionaire Andrew Forrest has pledged 300 million Dollars to curb slavery in India. Joel lives on Santa Cruz del Islote, a tiny island that's one of the most densely-populated on Earth. Despite the cramped conditions and poverty, most inhabitants stay. Joel hopes to get to the mainland, however, as he wants to study. The Caribbean island of Santa Cruz del Islote is barely larger than a football pitch. There’s no running water, no waste disposal system, neither a doctor nor a police officer. Yet the locals - some 500 of them today - tend to stay put. Joel is different: "I’m worried about getting stuck here like most, who’ve finished their schooling but haven’t left," he says. "I know a lot of people who’ve never pursued their dreams." He wants to become a nurse because he’s seen how detrimental it is when there is no medical help. To do so, he has to go to Colombia. He’s applying to the only university which offers nursing courses - the Universidad del Norte in Barranquilla. If he gets in, he’ll be the first Santa Cruz resident to study. It’s believed more than a million ethnic Uighurs are interned in China. Chinese officials call the detention facilities ‘re-education’ camps, but there’s overwhelming evidence that they are prison-like compounds designed for mass incarceration. China’s western Xinjiang region is almost five times the size of Germany. It’s home mainly to the Muslim Uighur minority. Today many houses and streets, entire villages even, are deserted, their residents confined to indoctrination camps by the Communist Party. China’s crackdown on the Uighur minority extends beyond its national borders. Exiles continue to be hounded by Chinese state security even after they seek refuge abroad. Uighurs who have acquired French citizenship recount the threats they’ve received from Chinese government representatives. Mouhamed Mbaye lives in Germany, and wants to import fish from Senegal, where he was born. Freshly caught, sustainable, fair. His business would create new jobs – jobs the region urgently needs. But international competition is fierce. A German wholesaler has expressed interest in Mouhamed Mbaye’s assortment of exotic fish. But meeting the hygiene regulations poses a tough challenge: The refrigerated supply chain has to stay uninterrupted for the entire journey. That’s not an easy feat in Senegal, where you can expect high temperatures year-round. Mouhamed Mbaye takes the trip to oversee preparations. If he can manage to get this import-export business running, he could ensure a steady income for himself and his workers. And the revenue it generates would strengthen the local economy. It is far too late to save the Alpine glaciers. And now, the dangers caused by tons of melting ice are rising sharply. Every year, climate change is destroying two of the currently 70 square kilometers of glaciers left in the Alps. The permafrost in the Alps is thawing, and transforming what used to be sturdy slopes into loose screes. In addition, climate change is leading to significantly more extreme weather conditions every year, while heavy rainfall causes serious erosion. The result: avalanches and landslides like those in Bondo, Switzerland, or Valsertal in Austria. In Switzerland, residential areas are shrinking as people are forced to leave their homes forever. The disappearance of glaciers as water reservoirs is already posing a major problem. Farmers in Engadine, who have been using meltwater for irrigation for centuries, are already facing water shortages. Last summer, they had to rely on helicopters to transport water to their herds in the Grison Alps. Above all, alpine villages depend on winter tourism to survive. Yet experts are forecasting that by mid-century, there will only be enough natural snow left to ski above 2,000 meters, which will spell out the end for about 70 percent of the ski resorts in the Eastern Alps. But instead of developing alternatives, lots of money is still being invested in ski tourism. Snow cannon are used to defy climate change, and artificial snow systems are under construction at ever higher altitudes. As usual, it’s the environment that is set to lose as the unique alpine landscape is further destroyed by soil compaction and erosion. Some municipalities are now working on new models of alpine tourism for the future. The EU spends nearly 60-billion euros per year on farm subsidies. That's about one-third of the E-U's entire budget. But the European Commission has proposed to cut subsidies over the next several years -- in part, to save money. The cuts may affect programs that aim to protect the environment. Right now, the largest share of the subsidies goes to individual farms, in the form of direct payments. The subsidies are based on the size of the farm: bigger farms get more money; smaller farms get less. There's also a direct subsidy for farms that take measures to help protect the environment. The EU is currently negotiating its next budget, which will cover the period 2021 - 2027. Some details have been leaked to the media. German government officials have raised serious concerns that the proposed budget for farm subsidies doesn't go far enough to protect the environment, and that it even proposes big cuts in payments to "green" farms. The EU Commission has also proposed to give member states more of a say in how the subsidies are distributed. Critics say that this violates the E-U's concept of a common agricultural policy. They claim that the proposal would allow some countries to reduce environmental standards so that their farm products can compete more effectively on world markets.

At the age of 73, Walter Pfeiffer is at the zenith of his career as a fashion photographer and illustrator. The Swiss artist gives an insight into his eventful life - and his models tell us what his pictures mean to them today. Walter Pfeiffer has been taking photos for 50 years and has shot hundreds of beautiful young men - and later also women - in Switzerland and Paris. But his kind of photography did not bring big money or international acclaim back then. His early pictures initially appeared mainly in underground magazines - until the breakthrough came in the 2000s and he made the leap into popular fashion magazines such as Vogue and i-D. Now his photographs can also be admired in museums and art collections around the world, while he continues to travel in search of new motifs and true beauty. In the documentary, we not only talk to the artist himself, but also to the people who appeared in front of his lens. On the way, we get an insight into forty years of youth culture. Pfeiffer's companions from the worlds of art and fashion reflect the tense relationship between the two, which Pfeiffer juggles with great confidence. The artist talks about his life and work with wit and levity and we see him working with both supermodels and unknowns as well as sketching natural subjects.
