2 cool dudes with smooth mIn this episode of DadsNite Presents: Timeout with Omar and Samer we talk to...EACH OTHER! That’s right, by popular demand we’ve got a conversation between the founders of DadsNite. We share a little background on ourselves, how we met, how DadsNite came to be, and some of our favorite highlights from Season 1 and the miniseries. We’re also still raising money for Beirut through our Beirut edition DadsNite t-shirt and dad hat. Check those out a long with some more DadsNite swag we recently added to our Shopify store (link in bio, the camo dad hat looks tough). Tune into the episode, link is in the bio. We’ll be kicking off the next season of Timeout soon enough. In the meantime DM us if you know any cool dads who you think we should hear from in Season 2 (leave those lame ass dads out our inbox) and always remember...it’s not a guys night, it’s a DadsNite!
DadsNite Presents: Timeout with Omar & Samer, is hosted by two best friends, Omar and Samer. Two cool dudes with smooth moods who are always ready to be your hype man when you need it the most. Whether you need a friend to help you drink your last shot of vodka out of a Dans’s Cafe squeeze bottle, or a shoulder to cry on, Omar and Samer are the friends you can rely on. As life goes on, more and more of our friends are beginning to have kids. As a way to create a space where our friends in all different stages of life could reconvene, reconnect, and re-establish their ever evolving identities, the DadsNite movement was born.
In Season 2 Episode 003 Part 2 of DadsNite Presents: Timeout with Omar and Samer we wrap up our episode with the illustrious David Johnson. For all you Trekkies out there, David even through in a First Contact analogy in this one. We’ve really enjoyed hearing Dads responses to our standard last few questions during this mini series, and David’s responses had Samer ready to run through a wall for him! We continue to learn and grow from all these amazing black fathers perspectives so let’s all continue to have these conversations with each other as human beings and really think about why things are the way they are. Race is a construct.
In Season 2 Episode 003 Part 1 of DadsNite Presents: Timeout with Omar and Samer we had the incredibly knowledgeable and outspoken David Johnson stop by the show. David has always been pushing for cultural awareness, through his part in producing videos for the National Museum for African American History and Culture and hosting black history tours while living in DC, to homeschooling and raising his two boys. David’s positive energy and enthusiasm only made it that much more enjoyable listening to another great perspective on our continuing conversations about race, diversity, and equality. David’s wife also has a podcast called Mommy Hour so check it out here @corene.lavhan cause ain’t no Dads without Moms!
In Season 2 Episode 003 Pt. 2 of DadsNite Presents: Timeout with Omar and Samer we wrap up this amazingly informative episode with Kelvin McNeil and Isiah Ruff. At times throughout the episode we’ve really just been left speechless. We learned a lot from Kelvin and Ruff, but the most important lesson of all might be that sometimes you just need to listen. Listen to where people are coming from, listen to the people who are really going through it, and listen to yourself when you know something is wrong. If you don’t ask, you won’t know! Shoutout to two of the coolest Dads around.
In Season 2 Episode 002 Pt. 2 of DadsNite Presents: Timeout with Omar and Samer we continue our dialogue centered around Kelvin and Ruff’s experiences with black fatherhood and black parenting. It was at times almost disturbing to hear the things that black parents have to consider and teach their children, not because they want to , but because they have to. Things as simple as learning to drive or just tuning into the Disney Channel have vastly different implications for black children and the conversations their parents have to have with them. Understanding where these differences come from is an important step in continuing to encourage growth and positive change.
In Season 2 Episode 002 of DadsNite Presents: Timeout with Omar and Samer we begin a three part episode with a couple of DadsNite alums, Kelvin McNeil and Isiah Ruff. In order to allow people to really absorb some of the amazing points and historical context Kelvin and Ruff discuss throughout the episode, we decided to release it in a few different segments. We made it a real point to ask Kelvin and Ruff to return to Timeout for our mini series with black dads. Not just because of their legendary season 1 episodes, but because of their conscious, introspective, and empathetic approach to their families and the world around them. In Pt. 1 of Episode 002 they both remind us that these atrocities against black people in America have been happening since the inception of this country, and public outcry seems to come and go. Although we may be witnessing a perfect storm unlike any other due to people being stuck at home with their regularly scheduled programming unavailable, change starts with knowledge. Knowledge of self and those we share our communities with.
On DadsNite, we decided to start sharing the stories of Dads from all cultures and backgrounds. In light of the current events, we decided to use this platform to talk about a topic that is not so easy and comfortable to talk about. Season 2 of DadsNite Presents: Timeout with Omar and Samer is a mini-series focusing on conversations with black dads. With so much information and so many opinions being thrown around about the current state of this country, we figured it’s best to go straight to the source. In Season 2 Episode 001 of DadsNite Presents: Timeout with Omar and Samer, former professional football player, current Delaware State Trooper, and full time dad Jamal Merrell helped us kick off our mini-series with an extremely positive vibe in a time filled with the complete opposite. He shared his thoughts on the badge, the protests, and always trying to be a guiding light at home and in the streets he’s sworn an oath to not only protect but improve. Jamal was able to educate us on the challenges the black community faces and what he endured growing up in it while also providing solutions on how to fix the problem. He also shared a unique story of how he is making a direct impact within the community. Our goal is to continue shining the light on the situation and amplifying the voices that have been suppressed for generations. We normally end our episode descriptions with our signature phrase, but we believe there is a more important message. Black Lives Matter!
As we wrap up season 1 of DadsNite Presents: Timeout with Omar and Samer, episode 012 is with Division 1 basketball coach Brian Johnson! Growing up in a basketball family, Brian has learned many life lessons early in his life. Going through some injuries during his time at the University of Delaware will allow him to share his stories triumph and succeeding through adversity with his daughter Emery. Brian shares a unique story of being a coach on the road and how important time management is in his world. Recently completing his Masters in Marketing, Brian explains how you can be a dad and still pursue your personal goals. This was a fun episode and a great way for us to wrap up season 1 of Dadsnite! We hope you enjoy the show as much as we did recording, and always remember, It's not a guy's night, it's a DadsNite!
In episode 011, we had the self-proclaimed Nigerian Nightmare turned Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists AKA CRNA, Pelu Ogunyemi! Pelu gave us the inside scoop on what it's like to be a DAD-CRNA in hospitals during the time of COVID. It wasn't all serious as we got to discuss how Pelu is able to keep up or not keep up with his hobbies as a former athlete. Pelu also channeled his inner storytelling ability when describing the day his daughter was born. This conversation took some unexpected turns as Pelu shared with us moments that he normally does not get to! Pelu said that he has never been interviewed before but when you listen to his story, we think he set us up! We hope you enjoy the show as much as we did recording, and always remember, It's not a guy's night, it's a DadsNite!
In episode 010 of DadsNite Presents: Timeout with Omar and Samer, our last guest Thomas’s older brother Josh Aguilar came on the show to set the record straight. Tom might be mom’s favorite, but Josh claims to be the better dad and uncle. Shots fired! This episode was filled with so many jokes that Omar left the show crying. Josh gave us a different side of being a dad that we can all appreciate! As a former Marine, Josh talked about planning to have kids and living his life with his new wife at the time. Being from a family that is big on family love, Josh also shared the secrets of being a great uncle and getting loyalty from the kids at a young age! During a time of seriousness, Josh brought up the break and fun we needed with jokes, good stories, and Dad wisdom. Salute to the former Marine! We hope you enjoy the show as much as we did recording, and always remember, It's not a guy's night, it's a DadsNite!
On Episode 009 of DadsNite Presents: Timeout with Omar and Samer, we had the chance to interview the youngest dad we’ve had on the show yet, Thomas Aguilar aka Tom Bomb. Tom has a unique story as he had his son at 18 and had to grow up faster than he really wanted! Tom being the youngest brother of 4, he was able to look up to his brothers and family for the guidance of helping raise his child. This episode was filled with a different side of fatherhood and a lot of jokes. Having a pretty big family, there are plenty of pranks and advice to go around! Do you think you could have had a kid at 18? Not us! Tune in to the show, comment, subscribe, rate and follow @DadsNite (on all social media platforms). We hope you enjoy the show as much as we did recording, and always remember, It's not a guy's night, it's a DadsNite!
DadsNite Presents: Timeout with Omar & Samer, Episode 008 was another fun one filled with many jokes and trying to keep up with Panos Kelamis as if he was a Kardashian! Just kidding, but not really! Panos has lived all around the world but joins us from the 6 on a late school night. We started early with asking about is AEK Athens pride and passing the legacy on. Being raised in the Kelamis household, it's black and yellow or you are disowned. Luckily, the whole family still loves each other and no one has been disowned yet... Anyway, Panos shared great advice and dropped gems throughout the episode as he talked about raising 2 young boys in the 6 with an overrated Drake running the streets. Just kidding, we like Drake since he is a dad too! Panos showed a unique perspective as we discussed having kids in Canada with a healthcare system that makes it easy for raising kids. We also talked about parental leave with maternity leave being up to 1.5 years (American... yeah we have trouble with the conversion rate too). Everything wasn't too serious as we have another installment of the gun show and got to break down some family feuds and growing up with a young brother. This was a fun one that ended with some great wisdom on self-care after a long day. Basically, get a nice glass of scotch. We hope you enjoy the show as much as we did recording, and always remember, It's not a guy's night, it's a DadsNite!
DadsNite Presents: Timeout with Omar & Samer, Episode 007 brought some fire to the episode and we aren't talking about a James Bond shootout! Our guest this week, Tarek Turki aka Turks, joined as the first panDADmic dad we've had on. Not to have you roll your eyes already, but Turks recently had a kid during the COVID outbreak so we got an inside scoop of what it is like being a brand new dad during this time of our lives. Don't worry, we already talk about COVID enough so we tried to change gears a little talking about hobbies, fasting during Ramadan, and apparently some childhood beef between Omar and him involving four square and broken arms. Tune in to catch this out! During the episode, we covered a lot of different topics that include what the baby routines include, giving up some hobbies, not living up to parents' expectations and the shift in priorities when talking about the child's future. We also had a chance for Turks to give us some good dad wisdom. Again, it wasn't all serious as Omar and Samer took as many shots as possible towards each other throughout the show. Tune in to the show, comment, subscribe, rate and follow @DadsNite (on all social media platforms). We hope you enjoy the show as much as we did recording, and always remember, It's not a guy's night, it's a DadsNite!
DadsNite Presents: Timeout with Omar & Samer, we had a chance to interview Samer’s best friend Andrew Corrigan aka Last Cup aka many other nicknames that we can’t put in writing. Another fun filled episode about what it’s like being a dad and being lucky to be there for pretty much the first year of his daughter’s life. We touched on a variety of topics from outlook of being a teacher, another round of the DadsNite Gun show, and what the day his daughter was born was like. This was a roller coaster of emotions as we got to see a side of Andrew we haven’t seen before! Tune in and let us know what you think! And remember, it’s not a guys night, it’s a DadsNite!
DadsNite Presents: Timeout with Omar & Samer, we interview good friend, fit dad, and financial expert Omid Sanie. In what may be the greatest "how we met" story ever, Omid explains how you really can't fight fate and God has a bigger plan for us all. Not to get too religious here, but Omid talked about how life working out the way it was supposed to. Being Afghan, (Note it is not Afghani!), he discussed some of the pressures from the family that will never go away. Just because you say yes, doesn't mean your mom and dad will stop giving unsolicited advice. Omid also talked about the future of his daughter while reflecting on himself being a 20-year-old asking to marry the woman of his dreams, Elam. Let's just say he was young, broke, but in love. DadsNite is a safe place for our guests to push the boundaries of discussing fatherhood so asking about his daughter's dating future wasn't off limits! Omid also discussed his Jedi mastery of establishing financial education with his young Padawan. This was another fun episode with the Omar and Samer cracking jokes on each other while uncovering many gems from Omid. And if you have any financial questions, please reach out to Omid (osanie@united-brokerage.com). Tune in to the show, comment, subscribe, rate and follow @DadsNite (on all social media platforms). We hope you enjoy the show as much as we did recording, and always remember, It's not a guy's night, it's a DadsNite!
DadsNite Presents: Timeout with Omar & Samer , we interviewed the man who has single handedly been keeping Austin weird, Vimal Fernandez. His unique perspective and candid answers made for a refreshing conversation about the ups and downs of dad life. In between us taking every opportunity to talk shit, we did manage to hit some serious topics including some great tips on financial planning. Vimal (aka The Wolf of 6th Street) reminds us that no one starts out as an expert in anything, it takes time and dedication!Vimal gave a unique perspective and gave some quality answers in the first ever DadsNite Gun Show segment! It wasn't a weak performance unlike his bench press numbers! Anyway, this was a really fun episode where we talked about raising a biracial kid and some of the challenges he and his wife are preparing for. Tune in to the show, comment, subscribe, rate and follow @DadsNite (on all social media platforms). We hope you enjoy the show as much as we did recording, and always remember, It's not a guy's night, it's a DadsNite!
DadsNite Presents: Timeout with Omar & Samer , we sit down the with the Original Dad aka the OD aka Kelvin McNeil Jr.! DadsNite started by accident, like the best things in life, when Omar, Samer, and Kelvin went out for the first time after Kelvin's first born. Kelvin discusses his recollection of that night and like most dads, he forgot half of the details but shared the memories and feelings of what that night meant to him and how it helped during a time of uncertainty and stress. In all honesty, we think we were more hype to be "dads" on the first DadsNite! We were so happy to have Kelvin join this episode not only because he is one of our good friends and the OD, but the way he broke down, pun intended, his journey as a new father. How his outlook changed, the sacrifices him and his wife had to make, and the early struggles they overcame to get to where they are today. There are a lot of gems sprinkled throughout the episode but more importantly, he kept it real the whole time. The show wasn't all serious though! Tune in to the show, comment, subscribe, rate and follow @DadsNite (on all social media platforms). We hope you enjoy the show as much as we did recording, and always remember, It's not a guy's night, it's a DadsNite!
DadsNite Presents: Timeout with Omar & Samer is back and ready to bring some more dad knowledge! Our deer friend (don't miss the terrible dad joke), Isiah Ruff didn't plan the first one but he stepped up to the plate in a big way with his now wife! There were many diamonds in the Ruff (cough dad joke cough) throughout this episode that we absolutely loved. With one more on the way, Ruff gave us his account on having to mature quickly, the pressures of fatherhood, and how having a great partner like Vita allows him to continue to pursue his entrepreneurial dreams. There are ups and downs of fatherhood but Ruff explains how there is "no right way to do it." Tune in to the show, comment, subscribe, rate us and follow @DadsNite (on all social media platforms). DadsNite Presents: Timeout with Omar & Samer is finally here! We've been cooking this up for quite some time and we are ecstatic to bring dads the first episode where we had the opportunity to interview our dear friend and all-around super dad Jirar "Jerry" Helou. Topics ranged from his kid pooping in the potty for the first time, to the changing role of fatherhood with the influence of social media. It wasn't all serious since we sprinkled some uncomfortably cringe-worthy dad jokes throughout. Let's be honest, what's a Dadsnite without some dad jokes and dad bods? There are ups and downs of fatherhood but as Jerry described, "It's an endless river of dopamine." Tune in to the show, comment, subscribe, rate and follow @DadsNite (on all social media platforms). We hope you enjoy the show as much as we did recording, and always remember, It's not a guy's night, it's a DadsNite!
