What's going on with I-375? (w/ Eric Larson, Downtown Detroit Partnership)

One of the projects in Detroit that's gotten a lot of attention locally and nationally is the proposed removal of the I-375 freeway in downtown Detroit and turning it back into something that fits with the fabric of a community. Eric Larson, head of the Downtown Detroit Partnership, sat down with us in studio to share his thoughts on why the I-375 project is more than just a standard infrastructure upgrade. Initially conceived as a bridge repair effort, the project has evolved into a significant opportunity to reimagine Detroit's transportation landscape. With support from the Biden administration and a $105 million federal commitment, the project aims to reconnect communities, enhance pedestrian-friendliness, and address past harms inflicted on historic neighborhoods like Black Bottom and Paradise Valley. The conversation covers the Downtown Detroit Partnership's role in ensuring the project reflects the city's broader vision for sustainable urban development. Larson discusses the balance between maintaining traffic flow for major events and creating a livable environment for everyday residents. He emphasizes the importance of community engagement and innovative traffic management solutions to address concerns about speed and access. The episode also touches on the potential integration of the I-375 project with the separate I-75 caps initiative, highlighting the need for coordinated urban planning to maximize benefits for Detroit's diverse communities. With construction slated to begin next year, Larson urges listeners to participate in upcoming community meetings and provide input on the project's future. For those interested in learning more and getting involved, visit downtowndetroit.org to access the peer review and stay informed about public engagement opportunities. And however you feel about the project, don't miss the December 3, 2024 meeting hosted by MDOT for further community discussions. How Detroit (and Michigan) could grow more startups and tech (ft. Brian McCullough)

There has been a lot of talk about growing Detroit, Southeast Michigan and Michigan's economy through startups and technology. But how do you actually do it - not just here, but in a number of cities across the country that aren't Silicon Valley, Seattle, New York City or other existing hubs? I thought I'd get some outside perspective with some experience dealing with Michigan, in Brian McCullough. Not only is he the founder and host of the daily Techmeme Ride Home podcast (among others), he's an enterpreneur, investor, and internet historian. We have a very real conversation about the topic, with a lot of experience and perspective. Duggan is done as Detroit mayor. What's next? Plus, FanDuel single game pricing misses the net

A full house as Jer, Norris and Devon are all in. First, Detroit mayor Mike Duggan is not seeking another term. We break down what it means for the city and the kinds of candidates we'd like to see to push Detroit forward (and two of us are current city residents, one is a former one but works every day in the city). Some of the considerations include - do they have the competency to handle a two-billion dollar plus budget? Although Mayor Duggan has made a lot of progress, there's still a lot more work to do. Then, we get into talking about the new FanDuel offer of individual Pistons and Red Wings games for $6.99. Should local sports be free to watch to reach the most people and compete with the NFL? The Power of Podcasts, Politicians, and Possibilities: Wrapping up the 2024 Election

Today, we wrap up the 2024 Election with Steve Friess. He's a smart journalist with a lot of experience.  With a local lens, we'll talk about how many young people and people from different backgrounds voted for Trump. This was unexpected and shows that the polls were wrong. We'll also talk about why people wanted a big change, even if it might cause problems. We'll look at why the messaging didn't work well, and some of the number of reasons why Kamala Harris lost the election. We'll also talk about how some people voted for different parties for different jobs in Michigan, and how podcasts helped change people's minds. Even though things are uncertain, we'll keep sharing with you important stories about Detroit and nearby areas. There's a race for governor coming as well as an election for mayor and council of Detroit.  Don't forget to follow us on your favorite podcast apps to learn what to know and where to go in southeast Michigan. Hello friends and welcome to your Daily Detroit for Thursday, November 7th, 2024. I’m Jer Staes… sharing what to know and where to go around town. Before we get started, thanks for all the feedback so far on yesterday’s episode with Devon O’Reilly - we’re going to gt back to it another time - but I also heard how many of you are just done with the election, or need a break. That said, if you want to add the pile - dailydetroit-at-gmail-dot-com or we have a feedback form on our website. Detroit voters approved a millage proposal that might speed up the pace of paying off debt for Detroit Public Schools. Oakland County is set to begin a major redevelopment project in downtown Pontiac this January. The Day After in Michigan (And What I Got Wrong)

The election is over. There's a lot to unpack. Devon joined me for an unfiltered brain dump the day after Donald Trump not only wins Michigan, but rode a wider red wave nationally into office - as well as state legislature changes. From filter bubbles, to finding a way forward, to understanding there are multiple factors at play, we get into it. I'll warn ahead of time this is not a heavily data-driven conversation. This is a lot of vibes. It's going to take time to think about. But we hope you get something from it from two people who care very much about their local community, have an interest in policy, and have seen a few election cycles.  Support our work, local news and media is needed now more than ever: https://www.patreon.com/DailyDetroit

Why We Think She Will Win Michigan

In today's episode we make a prediction: That Vice President Kamala Harris will win Michigan in 2024 and that Elissa Slotkin will win the U.S. Senate race, too. We might be wrong — but this is not just based on thin air.  We take our experience, the data we do have, and put it all together to analyze things how they stand. We think, from a lens being in Metro Detroit and Michigan, and respectfully, that some in the media like Steve Kornacki, Harry Enten, Dan Pfeiffer, and others may have missed a key indicator when trying to analyze this race. Steve Friess has been a freelance journalist for the New York Times, Newsweek, Politico and many others. But this isn't his first rodeo. He was the guy who first reported the contentious butterfly ballot story in 2000, for instance. Jer has been talking about local politics for years and is a regular attendee of policy conferences. He did the final interview of Former U.S. Senator Carl Levin before his death for HOUR Magazine, and has had conversations on the show with numerous local officeholders over the years. Corktown's New Hangout // Should We Put Lids On I-75? // Election Vibes

On today's Daily Detroit, your all-local podcast: Devon O'Reilly shares his recent visit to Corktown Taphouse, new on Michigan Avenue, featuring a vast selection of self-serve beers, duck pin bowling, and a family-friendly atmosphere.  The conversation shifts to Eastern Market's development compared to the bustling Corktown. Jer and Devon discuss the industrial nature of Eastern Market and the challenges it faces, highlighting some ongoing and stalled projects in the area. They also touch on the I-75 Lid project, weighing its potential benefits against the hefty costs and questioning its necessity in light of other pressing infrastructure needs. As election day approaches, Devon shares his thoughts on the current political climate, urging listeners to avoid the anxiety of constant poll watching and emphasizing the importance of focusing on local races. What Is The Best Use For 3D Printed Homes? A Southfield Project Looks To Find Out

In today's Daily Detroit, we get into the intersted world of 3D printed houses and the future of architecture with two distinguished guests from Lawrence Technological University: Karl Daubmann, Dean of the College of Architecture and Design, and Sara Codarin, Assistant Professor of Architecture.  As Metro Detroit continues to be a hub of innovation, the conversation sheds light on how technology is transforming the construction industry and what this means for the future of home building. 3D printing in construction is not just a buzzword; it represents a significant shift in how we approach building homes. Karl and Sara discuss their ongoing project in Southfield, where they are exploring the possibilities of 3D printed houses. This project, close to their campus, serves as a research initiative to analyze the cost, time, and value of integrating 3D printing into home construction. Their goal is to understand how this technology can be applied to create customizable, sustainable, and efficient housing solutions. One of the key highlights of the discussion is the potential for 3D printing to bring a new level of customization to home building. Traditional construction methods often limit design freedom, but with 3D printing, architects can explore new relationships between spaces and create unique, personalized homes. This tech also opens up opportunities for integrating automation in construction, offering a solution to the aging workforce in the trades and potentially attracting new talent to the field. Karl and Sara caution against viewing 3D printing as a cost-cutting miracle. Like any new technology, it starts as a high-performance, luxury option before becoming more affordable as it gains wider adoption. The focus, for now, is on the added value and dignity it can bring to housing, rather than immediate cost savings. The conversation also touches on the broader implications of automation in construction, like the potential for increasing housing density and addressing the challenges of urban sprawl in metro Detroit.  This episode is a must-listen for anyone interested in the future of architecture and construction. It offers a look into the innovative projects happening right here in Detroit and highlights the potential of 3D printing to revolutionize the way we build and live.  Learn more about PLOP Design: https://plop.design/ Learn more about Lawrence Tech: https://www.ltu.edu/ Sign up for our Saturday podcast studio coffee Nov. 9: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/1065173234819

I thank that Giordano’s location is just a bad spot for a restaurant. maybe it's just me. Maybe rents to high, but maybe it could be something else like a central hub for those peddle bars. A pizza and burger place has failed already. Maybe we need something fresh there.
