Today we dive into Patanjali Yoga Sutra's 1.30 and the second obstacle towards a practice, in this case we are talking about a running practice. The second obstacle is Styāna – Apathy, lack of interest and enthusiasm, boredom. Do you ever feel bored towards something you have been doing? Then you begin to question it and maybe even change it. Lack of interest can fluctuate during times in our life. In my running life, my approach to this obstacle has been to keep running boring, so that I am not used to something exciting all the time. The mind thrives off of excitement and distraction. To be able to keep the mind focused and excited in states of boredom is overcoming this obstacle. So keep at it!
Keziah began her run streak at the age of 10 years old. Currently 20 years old and in college, she has maintained her run streak all through childhood and plans to continue to run everyday for life!
Today I talk about obstacle 1 in Patanjali Yoga sutras - physical illness and disease "Vyadhi. Over the past 20 years, I have been sick many times, too many too count. I count the miles, but I don't count the times I was sick. Note that this illness is specifically physical illness, mental illness is not covered in this obstacle outlined in the sutra. That comes later. When I get injured or sick, I find a way to run. The pace is slower and I am extremely careful about not overcompensating and creating another injury if I am changing my gait to accomodate the injury.

This season is all about OBSTACLES! In order to run every single day, there will be obstacles. Don't be under the impression that it's easy. I am relating the obstacles in running to what Patanjali describes in the Yoga sutras (1.30):
1. Disease
2. Lack of interest, boredom
3. Self doubt
4. Distraction, carelessness
5. Burn out
6. Desire/craving
7. Living under misunderstanding
8. Doubting progress
9. Inability to maintain achievements
In each episode we will go through these obstacles and how to overcome them, how to see obstacles as learning opportunities. I will also be interviewing other streak runners as well.
Christine is at 1,000 consecutive days of running everyday!
Karen is from CA and began her run streak on January 1, 1997. Her minimum is 3 miles or 45 minute, whichever comes first. She has run through a broken arm as well as breast cancer. Over the course of her running career she has completed 193 marathons.
Jenna began running everyday and quickly realized she wanted to continue her daily run. She ran all through her pregnancy, hoping her run streak would continue. It’s a hard thing to predict and she did get in a run a few hours before her daughter was born, but not quite a full mile. She decided to retire her run streak and heal from pregnancy before embarking on another run streak!
Paula began her run streak in 1999 and hasn't missed a day since! A retired teacher, she lives by the motto "I CAN DO HARD THINGS"
Meet Lauren! Lauren is number 10 female on the Run Streak International's website www.runeveryday.com
She has been running every single consecutive day since October 1999.

I began a facebook group back in December for Women Streak Runners (you can search on facebook for that group). We are almost at 300 members and the group has proved to be supportive and nurturing.
I am excited to connect with other women streak runners in the next few months to tell our stories and how we became streak runners.

Back in the last summer, I challenged my followers to a 30 day run or walk streak challenge. There were quite a few that attempted it, but Natalie became the first female that successfully ran every single day for 30 days. We talk about how this was possible as she is home with her two kids and husband and how her journey began to inspire others to start this run or walk challenge.
In this episode I talk about why people are not able to complete the 30 day run streak challenge. It’s more than just running or walking every single day for 30 days. It’s about coming face to face with self limiting beliefs and thought patterns. Few have made it 10 days. In over 6,000 consecutive days of running, I’ve had to overcome many obstacles - thousands, just to get in my run. I’ve created this group “30 Days of Daily Motivation” for accountability, support and expert guidance to not only succeed in the 30 day run streak challenge but also as a way to overcome challenges and obstacles in day to day life that prevent you from connecting with yourself.
Mark Covert of California laced up his running shoes in 1968 and didn’t miss a day until 2013 when he voluntarily gave up his streak. We talk about what running used to be and how it has changed over the years, the principles remaining constant.
Steve Vorderman just completed the 30 day run streak challenge! We talk about how he began his running after a semi professional cycling background.
Meet Robert Kraft, known as “The Raven” to thousands of people who have ran with him on South Beach, Miami, Florida. He has not missed a day of running since 1975. He not only runs everyday, but runs at the same time and same place every single day.
Today’s episode, I am interviewing Pete Eshelman - my dad! Dad started running everyday three years after my streak, initially telling me not to run everyday. He is 15 years going strong in not missing a day.
1. You don’t believe you have the image of a “runner” 2. You think running is boring 3. You are scared 4. You think you look stupid 5. Thought patterns. All essentially are reasons that your mind creates for you to be trapped and stay within the confines of your own comfort. Break free. Try running.
