Prenatal and postpartum anxiety and depression are much more common that many people think. One in five mothers can experience PPA/PPD. The awareness that maternal anxiety and depression can start as early as pregnancy and occur days, months, and years after birth is so important.  This week we talk with counselor Tiffany Wicks about what we can do as mothers, as friends of mothers, and how birth workers can experience second-hand trauma and what we can do about it. About Tiffany Tiffany is the founder of Push Prenatal and Postpartum Counseling, PLLC. She received a Bachelors in Education from Texas A&M University and a Masters in Counseling at Southern Methodist University. She has worked with many different ages and counseling topics in her years of experience, but has a passion for working with expecting and new moms as well as birth workers as they navigate motherhood and life transitions.Tiffany offers both online and in person counseling, and currently has an office at The Nest in Addison.  Tiffany has a husband, a two-year old daughter, and two dogs and loves to work out and watch movies in her spare time.  Follow Tiffany Website:  PushPostpartum.com Instagram: @pushcounseling

After a life-changing accident, Jennifer wasn't sure if she was able to have children. She researched as much as she could to find something that could help her conceive. Her journey through IUI and Chinese medicine gave her to start she needed for her empowered birth! Jennifer has been preparing mentally for her birth since the beginning of her pregnancy, finding  podcasts and our own and Doing It At Home and other sources of birth information to choose what was going to work for her. Once upon a time, when I was 17, I got into a life threatening jet ski accident. When I was climbing back on my high school boyfriend thought I was all the way on and hit the gas. That massive 'jet' of water that comes out of the back tore my cervix. I was bleeding internally and went into hypovolemic shock. Once I arrived to the hospital they performed emergency surgery to find out where the bleed was coming from since I had zero visible lacerations on my body. I had 44 staples in my abdomen down to my pelvis and was told that they weren't exactly sure if I'd be able to have children or not. I found an amazing RE here in Dallas and we moved forward with the IUI process. After 4 failed attempts, her theory was that adhesions and scar tissue was blocking the eggs from entering my tubes. The type of trauma I experienced left me with plenty of scar tissue and we weren't exactly sure what was preventing me from getting pregnant. She suggested we move on to IVF. During this time frame I became a professional fertility researcher (of course). I found several studies where acupuncture improved IUI and IVF success rates. While I was going through the IUI process I started seeing a Chinese Medicine doctor and she saw no reason I needed IVF. She had me take herbs for about 3-4 months and do acupuncture, convinced it would work. I however, was not convinced. I thought, 15 dollar herbs? After years of infertility? Are you kidding? But I found the process relaxing and continued on for as long as we could afford the out of pocket expense. My last IUI was February 2017, and after it failed, we decided to make a plan to save 30k for IVF. I stopped going to the acupuncture doc during this time frame because I started traveling for work but finished the bottles of herbs I had left. I figured I'd start going again once we were ready for IVF.  I was supposed to get my period the first of June and my cycles are 29 days like clock work. I was a week late when I was in ground school for flight attendant training from the stress of the program so when my period was late again in June I thought I just must be regulating back to my usual. I went on with life as normal but it was getting close to our vacation and my period was 12 days late!! I called my OB and asked for birth control to reprogram my period so I won't be bleeding during my beach trip. She told me to take a pregnancy test, which I had already done once I was 5 days late and I told her it was negative and impossible for me to be pregnant anyway. She said just take one again and then call her back. So, I went upstairs and took the test, left it on the bathroom sink for at least 30 minutes forgetting all about it since it was going to be negative anyways, right?   WRONG!   I called my husband in shock and said I have no idea how I'm pregnant, but I am! It was truly a miracle. I am convinced it was Chinese Medicine that did the trick. The herbs were supposed to soften the adhesions and increase blood flow to the RE organs and I think they did just that! I saw her throughout my first trimester and into the second because she told me that acupuncture prevents miscarriage. She gave me some of her magic herbs and I have had an extremely healthy pregnancy, thankfully. When did you first learn about puberty? Maybe a 7th grade classroom, or most likely your BFF. Did you ever feel not normal? Like everyone else was further along or looked differently than you? Certified Nurse Midwife, Traci Santangelo talk with us about the importance of having these conversations with our mothers and daughters from an early age. Education is the catalyst to empowerment so we as women can feel confident and secure through all stages of life! About Traci Originally from Fort Worth, Texas, I received my Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Texas Womans’ University and started my career working in a local Labor & Delivery Unit. I then married a Yankee (don’t hold it against me) and he moved me to Detroit, Michigan, then to Miami, Florida and then to Chicago, Illinois – all for his exciting career. It was at the University of Illinois at Chicago that I received my Masters in Nursing with a Midwifery designation and a deep desire to move back to the Lone Star State. I was tired of being cold! During that time away, I had two children (that have my heart completely), worked in some incrediblehospitals as a Labor Nurse and really developed a desire to serve women. Birth has always been my passion. I love every part of it! From the first positive pregnancy test, to watching a mother hear her baby’s heartbeat for the first time, to hearing that same baby cry at birth. I find all of it exciting and am in constant awe of how perfect we are made to carry and birth a baby. I am a complete geek at the physiology of human development and can’t help but talk about developmental milestones because they are interesting, and why wouldn’t you want to know everything about your baby?!? I never tire of it. And I never tire of a woman’s need to feel validated, heard and respected. You deserve that, you are a woman for goodness sake!
