Description

I’m Lori Gottlieb, author of Maybe You Should Talk To Someone. And I’m Guy Winch, author of Emotional First Aid. We’re both advice columnists, TED speakers, and of course therapists in clinical practice who want to bring the lessons of the therapy room outside the therapy room… to all of you. Each week on DEAR THERAPISTS, we invite you to be a fly-on-the-wall in these personal, raw, transformative sessions with everyday people and then hear what happens when we give concrete, actionable advice and have them report back to let us know how things went after the session ended. We’re sharing these real sessions because we believe that everyone can benefit from hearing how people just like them get through their struggles and grow and change. So sit back and come into the therapy room with us… and prepare to learn a lot about yourself in the process.

Poor Vanessa. I hope she develops her own surrogate family soon. Throughout her recanting of what happened to her I couldn’t help but wonder if her experience would have been different if she were male. Her family just had complete disregard and lack of respect for her autonomy and were very aggressive with their demands. To the point it was as if they did not see her as an individual only as something to benefit themselves.

I love listening to this podcast. A lot of the topics aren't something that I can relate to but some how a lot of the advice is useful in so many other spots in life. I love listening to the ending where Lori and Guy come up with what they want the person to try. So interesting to see what they come up with!

This episode has really resonated with me. Although a different situation, I see a lot of similarities. my husband has been battling with long-covid for over a year now. he got sick in the first wave ( March 2020) and has been through a rollercoaster ride of illness ever since and is still not better. It's been heartbreaking to witness, but it has also thrown me into the role of care giver and has profoundly impacted our relationship. In a way, I feel like I'm mourning who we used to be as a couple and fearful that things will never be the same again. Thank you for the insights shared in this episode and to Savannah for opening up about her struggles.
