In 1985, as thrash metal continued to make it's way out of the underground, two albums that were released 6 months apart set out to take the world by storm. First, on the west coast, Exodus released their long awaited (by fans!) debut album Bonded by Blood. Similarly, on the east coast, Overkill unleashed their debut Feel the Fire. Both bands are still going strong in 2025 and we love it! on this episode, we go head-to-head to see which debut album made you headbang more than the other! Way back on Episode #39 during our first year in 2020, we premiered an episode format that went over great with the listeners.  It was the Greatest Hits show. But those first few shows didn’t use the same format for choosing what we think are a band’s greatest hits as we do now. So at the suggestion of one of our listeners, we are re-doing the episode to do it the way we have perfected it. The first band we did was Megadeth, so they are the first one we will redeaux! So sit back, relax, turn it up to 11 and let the debate begin! Judas Priest’s Screaming for Vengeance is the album that turned them into a household metal band and Iron Maiden’s Number of the Beast also broke the band in the US. Today we’re going to discuss the pros and cons of each as well as dive a little deeper than normal and give our personal takes and anecdotes on the albums. So sit back, relax, turn it up to 11 and let the debate begin. Metallica’s self titled album Metallica, commonly known as “The Black Album” was released in August of 1991.  Megadeth’s Countdown was released 11 months later in July of 1992. Both albums marked a more commercial direction for the bands but also cemented each band’s place in the world of heavy metal.  Today, the guys are going to go track by track and discuss the pros and cons of each as well as dive a little deeper than we normally do because these are two bands they really like. And when they’re done with that, they’ll give you their BIG 4 Megadeth Drummers.  So sit back, relax and let the debate begin. Happy New Year Every body! When it comes first songs on albums, the best way to grab your audience’s attention is to start with a banger of a song. But where do you go from there? Today, the guys discuss what they believe to be some of the best first and second songs on a metal album…so sit back, relax, turn it up to 11 and let the debate begin.  Hosted by - Kenneth Dean, the Dean of Metal and Chris Kaye Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/debatingmetalpodcast Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/debatingmetal/ X - https://twitter.com/debatingmtlpod email - debatingmetal@gmail.com
Ep. 169 - Why All the Hate

Ep. 169 - Why All the Hate

2024-11-2501:31:25

This past weekend, Chris Kaye and Kenneth Dean drove up to Ft. Worth, TX from the outskirts of Houston where they live to go see Iron Maiden in concert. And while they were driving up, they decided it would be a great time to record an episode.  So that’s what they did. They went back to what they did when they first met.  They brought up a subject and just started talking about it. So what was the topic you ask? Why all the hate? All musical artists have their fans and their critics, but some artists elicit such an emotional response from fans and critics alike it begs one to wonder why? On this episode, the guys discussed 3 bands that have all had enormous success and also have some of the harshest critics: Nickelback, Creed and Metallica. So sit back, relax, turn it up to 11 and let the debate begin. Hosted by - Kenneth Dean, the Dean of Metal and Chris Kaye Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/debatingmetalpodcast Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/debatingmetal/ X - https://twitter.com/debatingmtlpod email - debatingmetal@gmail.com
1987 was the year that the cracks would begin to show in the world of heavy metal and more specifically Glam Metal. But it still had some very good metal music. While one band was on top of the world 2 years earlier and would disband in 1987, one band that formed 2 years earlier went on to have the biggest selling debut of all-time. Some may say the guys are stuck in the 80’s and for this episode, they are as they breakdown 1987. So sit back, relax, turn it up to 11 and let the debate begin. In 2006 the former member of the Dio era Black Sabbath reunited as Heaven and Hell and recorded 3 new songs to be included in a Black Sabbath Dio Years compilation. That led to a tour and then a full album. The subsequent tour would be Ronnie’s last as he was diagnosed with stomach cancer shortly thereafter and passed away on May 16, 2010. About a year and half later, the original Black Sabbath convened at the famed Whisky A Go-Go to announce they would be reuniting with plans to record a new album and tour. 13 was released in 2013 and their final tour followed. On this episode, the guys pit the final albums of these two bands careers to see which one we think is the better album. They also give you their BIG 4 Ronnie James Dio Songs. So sit back, relax, turn it up to 11 and let the debate begin. It's part 5 and the final part of our series call the 10 Most Important in Metal History and we saved the best for last. Whether you want to admit it or not, lead singers are the most vital component when it comes to a band. While it is affectionately and commonly known that most singers have LSD, Lead Singers Disease, there is a reason for that. The singer is the front man, the most visible person on the stage and essentially the mouthpiece of the band. Today we’re going to share with you whom we think are the 10 Most Important Vocalists in Metal History and we're sure it won’t come without controversy....So sit back, relax and let the debate begin. It's Part 3 of the 5-part series The 10 Most Important in Metal History. Drummers by and large are a unique breed of people.  As the old saying goes, they spend their days hitting things with sticks so they are a little different to begin with. But to be considered one of the best in history, that means you’ve got a lot more going on than just a good back beat. These next group of drummers the guys will be discussing are some of the most unique, ferocious, and dare I say intelligent drummers to grace the world of Music. To Debating Metal, they are the 10 Most Important Drummers in Metal History.. So sit back, relax and let the debate begin. Part 2 of the 5-part series The 10 Most Important in Metal History. Typically, the bassist and the drummer work in unison to keep the beat and rhythm of the song. Other times, bassists take a more intricate roll whether it's playing melodies as an additional guitarist or playing the instrument as if they were the lead guitarist. Either way, bassists are the foundation of every band and on this episode, the guys give you their opinions on who they think the 10 Most Important Bassist in Heavy Metal History are.
