S05 Episode 7 - Grace

2024-06-2034:15

In this episode of the Deep Resonance podcast, hosts Miche and Tamice start an impromptu recording to discuss a variety of topics including the multifaceted meanings of grace, the importance of overcoming mental models, and the heavy weight of words and their multiple interpretations. They explore how conservative and progressive viewpoints on social justice can differ yet both desire the same end goals of love and justice. Miche also shares personal experiences with trauma and dissociation, and the two delve into how personal and societal trauma shape our approaches to activism. They critically analyze the current state of progressivism and its colonial undertones, emphasizing how true social justice should resonate with deeper human values rather than simply opposing the 'other side.' The episode stresses the importance of resonance, empathy, and curiosity in driving meaningful change, while also touching on the need for new economic and social justice models beyond traditional binaries. The discussion concludes with reflections on personal growth, the power of love, and future plans for upcoming podcast episodes.
Hey ya'll Soooooo, last week we forgot to upload our episode haha. So this week it's a double episode and we hope you enjoy both. The first one is from this week where we talk about the state of our mind and conservative hermeneutics applied in progressive spaces. The second one talks about homonyms and the effects in the church.
In this episode of Deep Resonance, we (Mish and Tamice) dive into a candid conversation about our experiences as people from marginalized backgrounds navigating the complexities of social justice, allyship, and personal transformation. We discuss the importance of centering voices from the margins and share some of the cringeworthy ways well-meaning folks sometimes miss the mark - from comparing transgender identities to drag performances to equating Asian representation with buying from a Chinese restaurant. We also wrestle with the tensions that arise when privileged people speak out about oppression in ways that feel performative or self-serving, and explore how we can move towards true solidarity and collective liberation. A major theme of our conversation is the need to go beyond pursuing "justice" within oppressive systems, and instead work towards deep, holistic transformation on both an individual and societal level. We reflect on how our own journeys have led us to embrace non-alienation, recognizing our shared humanity even as we challenge dehumanizing beliefs and actions. We also talk about the importance of grounding our activism in lived experience and relationships of accountability, rather than settling for shallow "wokeness." And we share some exciting news about an upcoming course we're offering for those who want to dive deeper into these topics in community!
Hey ya'll, we're back again with a new episode. We're trying out some new gear so forgive the sound quality difference. We've been out for a while so this was a well needed catch up of us not being able to see each other for a while. Can you believe that some hotels still greet us with racism in 2024? And can you believe that there are people deciding for you what your ethnicity is? This, and much more on today's episode!
Hey ya'll Today Tamice and Miche are recapping their weeks as they both went on the road to present some of the things they are most passionate about.
Hey ya'll, we're back and there are quite some changes to our podcasts. First of all, the name has changed to Deep Resonance and we have a new permanent host: Tamice Spencer Helms The podcast will remain the same but the style will be a little different. Every week Tamice and I will bring in a topic and just run our thoughts over it live. Which means that whatever we say today, may change in the future because some of you dear listeners educate us, but it also means a more dynamic podcast coming to your inbox every week. Today's episode is about the exhausted majority, Christian Nationalism, and white male progressives. On today's episode we have SHOC's pastor Donna Burkland on! We get to talk about how Intersectionality adds complexity to one's life and can result in additional expenses, how disability justice should be covered by insurance, and also attending conferences and making plans can be exciting and require careful consideration. In this conversation, Emily Paulson discusses her journey as a recovery advocate and her experience with multi-level marketing (MLM). She shares her involvement with the Sober Mom Squad, an online community for moms struggling with alcohol use. She explains what MLMs are and why they can be harmful and reflects on her own participation in an MLM and the realization of her complicity in upholding harmful systems. Emily emphasizes the importance of sitting with discomfort and recognizing the nuances in complex issues. She encourages individuals to challenge assumptions and strive for a deeper understanding of the systems they are a part of. Takeaways Recognize the harm that MLMs can cause and be cautious of their predatory nature. Engage in open and honest conversations about complicity and the systems we participate in. Sit with discomfort and embrace ambiguity to foster personal growth and understanding. Challenge assumptions and strive for a deeper understanding of complex issues. Just a heads up, there are some siren sounds in the background. Today's guest is Liz Edamn. Liz Edman (she/her) is an Episcopal priest and political strategist, a published author of "Queer Virtue" who has been igniting people's understanding of Christianity and queer life for more than 25 years.  She has lived and worked on the front lines of some of the most salient contemporary issues where religion meets sexuality, serving as an inner city hospital chaplain to people with HIV/AIDS from 1989 to 1995, helping craft political and communications strategies for marriage equality efforts, and persevering for almost two decades to become an openly queer priest in the Episcopal Church.
On today's episode, we are joined by Pastor Anthony from the Table Church. Anthony Parrott hails from Goshen, Indiana. Before moving to Washington, DC in 2020, he and his family pastored in northwest Iowa for 10 years. He received a Bachelors in Philosophy and Bible from Bethel University, Indiana, and a Masters of Divinity with an emphasis in Theology from Asbury Theological Seminary. He has the joy of being a husband to Emily and father to Audrey and Wesley. He’s a devoted fan of Star Wars and a connoisseur of fine sodas.
Some editorial notes: Sabrina made a comment about the bible being interpreted individually but she texted me and said that of course certain letters and books were written to an individual. Another note is that Sabrina had to leave a little bit earlier as David and I finished the conversation, so she's not in the last 10 minutes of the podcast. On today's show, we welcome half of the team of authors of the book "Learning Our Names: Asian American Christians on Identity, Relationships, and Vocation." and this episode is dear to my heart as I also live on the intersection of my Asian identity. Both Sabrina and David are genius in their field and I'm excited to share this episode with ya'll.
CW - mentions of transphobia Today we are joined by Tim Whitaker from the New Evangelicals talking about how white people can navigate space and why he is considering himself an evangelical while at the same time being progressive in his faith expressions.
On today's episode, we are graced by my dear friend Bridget Black, a Theologian and Spiritual Director based in CA. I hope you enjoy how we get deep into the weeds immediately as we discuss proverbs, disembodiment, and holding space for our experience as cocreators with God.
