Sorry for the delay! Deeper Digs returns! After taking a three month break, the Rock N Roll Archaeologist is back with a new episode. But… as you'll hear this may not be a complete return to the weekly podcast. In fact, it is possible Deeper Digs may be retired or may become something that shows up every once in a while. Of course, it may all depend on you! This week, Christian is joined by Heather Jackson, the chairperson of Realm of Caring. Pantheon Media is a proud sponsor for their upcoming “Rock the Roc” event on April 7th, 2021, to honor the short life of Charlotte Figi, who was the inspiration for ROC and the CBD strain “Charlotte’s Web”. Realm of Caring (RoC) is creating a world-wide community where access to plant-based medicine is a cornerstone of helping others. Our why is simple: Charlotte Figi and the millions like her. Her story shifted the paradigm of wellness and access for all, as the world watched through the empathetic eyes of Dr. Sanjay Gupta and his captivating docuseries, Weed. Charlotte’s impact remains the footprint of our path forward, toward care for all through the healing power of the earth. Her legacy became a foundation of education, research, and impact, one that grows its sphere of influence to an ever-expanding circle of seekers, families, and souls as they journey toward a more healing future. Charlotte's sudden and tragic passing at the age of thirteen on April 07, 2020, is a heavy reminder that life is precious, that the dignity of choice is critical, and that the courage of innocence is a guidepost for human wellness. Realm of Caring improves lives through Research, Education, and Community. By funding and conducting Research, we learn more about cannabis and its effects while legitimizing the therapy. Education empowers consumers to select the best products for their individual needs, and informs healthcare professionals about options for their patients. Through Community, we spread the truth about cannabis and expand access to those in need. Heather Jackson is the Co-Founder and President of the Realm of Caring Foundation (RoC), an internationally acclaimed non-profit primarily serving families who are dealing with life-limiting and chronic health conditions. Her mission, after helping her son transition from hospice to health, is to reimagine the way we think, talk, and respond to plant medicine and the people who use it. To that end, she is committed to innovative scientific research, building global communities and advancing demanded conversations about these life-changing approaches to health. In addition, Ms. Jackson recently co-founded Unlimited Sciences, a psychedelic research and awareness non-profit. She is an international speaker, published researcher and author, and her work has been featured on Dateline, 60 Minutes Australia and CNN with Dr. Sanjay Gupta as well as in the New York Times, National Geographic, TIME and Good Housekeeping.  https://rocktheroc.org/ https://realmofcaring.org/ Learn more about your ad choices. Our final Jimi Hendrix special has Christian join three rock n rollers to discuss what the man means to them. First up is Bassist and perhaps oldest collaborator Billy cox, followed by percussionist Juma Sultan and finally with Hendrix re-creator Jimy Bleu, guitarist for Kiss the Sky. Billy Cox Billy Cox is best known for performing with Jimi Hendrix. Cox is the only surviving musician to have regularly played with Hendrix: first with the experimental group that backed Hendrix at Woodstock (informally referred to as "Gypsy Sun and Rainbows"), followed by the trio with drummer Buddy Miles that recorded the live Band of Gypsys album, and, lastly, The Cry of Love Tour trio with Mitch Mitchell back on drums. Cox continues to perform dates with the Band of Gypsys Experience and the Experience Hendrix Tour. As well as sitting in with Kiss the Sky several times. Today, Billy Cox owns a video production company. He has produced numerous blues and a myriad of gospel shows. He co-authored the books Jimi Hendrix Sessions and Ultimate Hendrix with John McDermott and Eddie Kramer. He released Old School Blue Blues in 2011, and continues to tour with "The Experience Hendrix Tour" each year and his own Band of Gypsys Experience. http://www.bassistbillycox.com/ Juma Sultan Juma Sultan (born April 13, 1942) is a jazz musician, most often recording as a percussionist or bass player. He may be best known for his appearance at the Woodstock festival of 1969 at Bethel, New York, playing with Jimi Hendrix. He currently plays in the African performance group Sankofa, the band Sons of Thunder, and with the Juma Sultan Band. Sultan was born in Monrovia, California on April 13, 1942. In 1969, he performed at the Woodstock festival in Hendrix's band, Gypsy Sun and Rainbows and on The Dick Cavett Show and at a special show in Harlem, New York several weeks later. He was interviewed extensively for the documentary films, Jimi Hendrix and Jimi Hendrix: Live at Woodstock. He appears on approximately 12 of Jimi Hendrix' posthumous releases.www.jumasarchive.org. Jimmy Bleu Kiss the Sky, who you will see performing at the Historic Bearville Theater in Woodstock New York is fronted by virtuoso guitarist and former Columbia recording artist, Jimy Bleu, and backed by a cast of world-class touring musicians from the NYC metro area. KTS musicians are so 'EXPERIENCED' that all 3 of Jimi's remaining former bandmates and living legends (Billy Cox, Juma Sultan and Jerry Velez) have each played on stage along side KTS performers. Most especially, Jimy Bleu, is the longest running Jimi tribute specialist in the world and even tours with former Hendrix Bassist, Billy Cox and his Band of Gypsys Experience Jimy Bleu actually met Jimi Hendrix in 1968 while at Warner/Reprise records and a member of the official Hendrix fan club that got Hendrix to address an assembly at his high school of the Performing Arts in NYC. The very next year at Woodstock, Bleu was thrown one of the guitar straps Hendrix used in that famous performance and through this direct musical lineage, Jimy Bleu has carried the figurative baton of the Jimi Hendrix guitar showmanship legacy ever since. Jimy Bleu attended Berklee College of Music on the recommendation of Hendrix himself and went on to become a Columbia/Def Jam recording artist.  A Hendrix historian, Bleu has given lectures on radio, TV and college campuses about the musical, spiritual and political importance of Hendrix. His musical talents and Hendrix stage show expertise has even landed Bleu a touring member spot with former Jimi Hendrix bassist, Mr. Billy Cox’s band ... The Band of Gypsys Experience! Like Jimi Hendrix...Jimy Bleu is also one of the only lefthanders in the guitar biz... bringing even more authenticity to the concert re-creations he now performs in...KISS THE SKY! https://www.kisstheskytribute.com/about.html  Learn more about your ad choices. Episode three in our November salute to Jimi Hendrix. This time the Rock N Roll Archaeologist speaks to two very different legends with very different Hendrix ties. First up is the immensely talented blues guitarist John Hammond and then we dig deep on all sorts of topics that weave in and out of the Jimi orbit with Living Colour’s superb guitarist Vernon Reid. John P. Hammond John Hammond is one of the world's premier acoustic blues artists: a Blues Hall Of Fame inductee and Grammy award winner with 33+ albums to date, an almost 60 year career, 8 Grammy nominations, 22 Blues Music Award nominations and 10 wins. He is the only person who has ever had both Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton in a band at the same time! Besides Hendrix and Clapton, John has performed or recorded with Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Duane Allman, Mike Bloomfield, JJ Cale, Tom Waits, The Band, John Lee Hooker, Dr. John and many more. A tireless performer, he continues to tour world-wide on an annual basis. Well until this year that is. He began playing guitar in high school, partially inspired by the album Jimmy Reed at Carnegie Hall. He attended Antioch College for one year but dropped out to pursue a music career. By the mid-1960s he was touring nationally and living in Greenwich Village. Hammond has earned one Grammy Award and been nominated for four others. He also provided the soundtrack for the 1970 film Little Big Man, starring Dustin Hoffman. http://johnhammond.com/https://www.amazon.com/John-Hammond/e/B000APEEP2?ref=sr_ntt_srch_lnk_2&qid=1606153630&sr=8-2 Vernon Reid As the lead guitarist of Living Colour and a co-founder of the Black Rock Coalition, Vernon Reid has done a great deal to undermine stereotypical expectations of what music black artists ought to play; his rampant eclecticism encompasses everything from hard rock and punk to funk, R&B and avant-garde jazz, and his anarchic, lightning-fast solos have become something of a hallmark as well. Born in London, Reid and his family emigrated to Brooklyn while he was a child; he began playing guitar at age 15, initially studying jazz and progressing quickly. In 1980, he joined drummer Ronald Shannon Jackson's Decoding Society, a cutting-edge jazz group with whom he appeared on six albums; over the course of the decade, Reid went on to work with a wide variety of experimental musicians -- Defunkt, Bill Frisell, John Zorn, Arto Lindsay, and Public Enemy, among others. Around 1983, Reid formed the first version of what was to become Living Colour; in 1985, with journalist Greg Tate, he formed the Black Rock Coalition, an organization devoted to opening doors in the music business for black musicians who were not content being confined to the roles of soul crooner or rapper. Living Colour did not really begin to jell until their lineup stabilized in 1986, and when Mick Jagger saw the group perform at CBGB's and invited them to appear on his Primitive Cool album. Jagger went even further, producing two demo tracks and helping to convince Epic to sign the group. Living Colour debuted to massive critical acclaim in 1988 with Vivid; the group lasted through Time's Up (1990) and Stain (1993) before disbanding in 1995.  Vernon Reid Band of Gypsys Revisited Band (VR-BOG-RB) have known each other since 1985, sharing the stage in bands such as the Screaming Headless Torsos, Yohimbe Brothers, Burnt Sugar the Arkestra Chamber and The Black Rock Coalition Big Band. In the spirit of revisiting, refreshing and further exploring the fun, funk & roll of the “Band of Gypsys Live at The Fillmore East” recording, Vernon Reid, André ‘Dré Glo’ Lassalle, James “Biscuit” Rouse, and Jared Michael Nickerson as VR-BOG-RB look forward to bringing this limited edition performance to your hamlet, city, town, or county fair. https://twitter.com/vurnt22?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor https://www.vrbogrb.com/ Learn more about your ad choices. Kiss The Sky recreate Hendrix’s most iconic concert moments in full replica wardrobe and gear so well that they have had the honor of playing with all surviving members of Hendrix’s own bands including Billy Cox, The Last Gypsy.  http://bearsvilletheater.com/events/kiss-the-sky-the-re-experience-worlds-greatest-tribute-to-jimi-hendrix-annual-birthday-celebration/ Today we have two amazing guests to kick things off! First up is one of the greatest living drummers, Kenny Aronoff.  Voted one of the top 100 drummers of all time by Rolling Stone Magazine, Drummer Magazine have crowned Kenny Aronoff the #1 Pop /Rock Drummer and the #1 Studio Drummer for his unique and emulated style combining finesse and power. The celebrated musician has contributed his talents to more than 60 Grammy® nominated recordings. Over 300 million records sold worldwide feature his work—1,300 of which are certified gold, platinum or diamond records! In his autobiography, Sex, Drums, Rock ’n’ Roll! Kenny Aronoff talks about his childhood growing up in both the Berkshires and Mid-West. At an early age, music inspired him. He studied classical, jazz and every style in between—creating a foundation that evolved him into the versatile drummer he is today, with the talent to play anything. While trying to make it in the music industry in his early 20’s, fate stepped in with the audition that would change his life—it was for John Mellencamp. His work with Mellencamp catapulted Aronoff to the top of the charts with hits like “Hurts so Good,” “Little Pink Houses,” and “Jack and Diane” paving the way for session and recording work for many remarkable artists. https://www.amazon.com/Sex-Drums-Rock-Roll-Business/dp/1495007936 Batting second is Corey Washington with a very important book “Jimi Hendrix - Black Legacy (A Dream Deferred)” is the culmination of a two decade journey of author Corey Washington's exploration of Jimi Hendrix's complex and misunderstood relationship and impact on the Black Community. Jimi's life has been featured in numerous biographies over the years, but very little has been properly documented, when it comes to his influence on people of color. Hendrix was often seen by many to have transcended race, which is a slap in the face to his deep cultural roots, concerning not only his Black musical traditions, but simply growing up as a Black person in the 40's-60’s. Corey seeks to add to Jimi's overall legacy, by embracing Jimi's Black culture, including the well known people in Jimi's life, as well as the voices that many do not get to hear from in your traditional Jimi Hendrix biographies. It was always a strong desire of Jimi Hendrix to garner a more diverse fan base. Although he never got to fully see the fruits of his labor, Jimi Hendrix - Black Legacy, will reveal that his wish ultimately came true. Corey Washington is a high school History teacher currently teaching in Richmond County, Augusta, Georgia. He holds both a bachelor's and master's degree in Middle Grades Education from Augusta State University. Born in New York City in 1976, he has grown up in a cultural/racial melting pot. https://www.amazon.com/Jimi-Hendrix-Black-Legacy-Deferred/dp/179346233X/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=corey+washington&qid=1605208270&s=books&sr=1-1 Learn more about your ad choices. Jon Anderson of Yes

Jon Anderson of Yes

2020-11-0501:22:18

A real Immortal of the rock n roll pantheon joins Christian for a career breakdown, as well as a focus on new material including a rare political song. Jon Anderson the voice of Yes is the guest on this episode of Deeper Digs! Jon Anderson is undoubtedly one of the most recognizable voices in progressive rock as the lead vocalist and creative force behind Yes. Anderson was the author and a major creative influence behind the ground-breaking album Fragile as well as the series of epic, complex pieces such as “Awaken”, “Gates of Delirium” and especially “Close to the Edge” which were central to the band’s success. Additionally, Anderson co-authored the group’s biggest hits, including “I’ve Seen All Good People”, “Roundabout”, and “Owner Of A Lonely Heart”. Never to stand still musically, he is getting ready to release an album he started 28 years ago through Blue Élan Records. The album’s title, 1,000 Hands is a reference to the fact that numerous guest musicians perform on the album, including Ian Anderson, Billy Cobham, Jean-Luc Ponty, Steve Morse, Chick Corea, Zap Mama, Chris Squire, Alan White, Steve Howe and many more. This album, produced by his friend Michael Franklin, really speaks to the power of a musical life still in the throes of a fervent artistic endeavor, always wanting new experiences in music, always wanting to surprise the listener. The album comes out on July 31, 2020 and will be offered on deluxe double gatefold vinyl, CD, and through all digital platforms. In the mid 70’s he created a pure solo album, in every sense of the word: performing all the music, playing every instrument, writing a storyline, and of course singing all the vocals in the critically acclaimed Olias of Sunhillow… a milestone in recording and adventurous creativity. You only need to look at his output of solo albums over the years to see how inventive his life in music has been, from Animation to Song of Seven, Three Ships to Toltec, City of Angels to The More You Know, to name just a few. All of these albums marked his own progression and adventure through music…leading up to 2009 following his near death, the release of the life affirming album Survival and Other Stories. In Jon’s words: “Music is our spiritual connection to the soul, that’s why people all over the world connect to Music and to each other through Music.” 1000 Hands, a new album long in the making. The album originates from sessions for a project to have been called Uzlot (a northern English pronunciation of "us lot") that Anderson had been recording in Big Bear, California, with Brian Chatton in around 1990. Chatton wrote most of the music, played keyboards and also sang. Anderson asked his then Yes bandmates Chris Squire and Alan White to play on the project too. At the time, Yes were preparing for a tour and Anderson put the master tapes in his garage and, as he has recounted, gave them very little thought for many years. In 2016, producer Michael Franklin contacted Anderson about using the tapes and finishing the album. Further recordings followed at Solar Studios in Orlando, Florida. Along with some newly written material, the final result is 1000 Hands. As the album title suggests, the album was created with a number of guest performers, including Steve Howe, Jethro Tull's Ian Anderson, Brian Chatton, Larry Coryell, Steve Morse, Journey keyboardist Jonathan Cain, Vanilla Fudge drummer Carmine Appice, Rick Derringer, the Tower of Power horn section, violinist Jean-Luc Ponty and pianist Chick Corea. https://www.jonanderson.com/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1000_Hands:_Chapter_One https://listen.tidal.com/album/137775169 Learn more about your ad choices. Christian gets to add another photographer to the list when he spends time with the great Neal Preston, one of the best to ever point the lens rock n roll’s way! Neal Preston is one of the most highly respected photographers in the history of the music business. His career in photography, which started in high school and continues to the present, has spanned well over 4 decades. Through his body of work Preston has made a significant contribution to the pop culture history of multiple generations. His archive stands as one of the music industry’s single most elite (and extensive) photographic collections. For years, his photographs have appeared in every conceivable media outlet: on the covers and pages of hundreds of world-class magazines, newspapers, and books, on television shows, in feature films and documentaries, in Broadway show programs and billboards, in print and electronic advertisements, and on innumerable vinyl and CD/DVD packages. Additionally, he was the key contributor to VH-1’s acclaimed “Behind the Music” documentary series, providing over one thousand still photos used in over 50 episodes. Although Preston is best known in rock circles as Led Zeppelin’s U.S. tour photographer in the mid-1970’s, his rock-and-roll travels have taken him around the world many times. He has visited Russia with Billy Joel, Japan with Bruce Springsteen, Madonna, and Michael Jackson, China with Wham! , South Africa with Whitney Houston, Canada with Heart, Japan with Duran Duran, and Mexico and South America with Queen in both 1981 and 2015. In 1985, Preston was chosen as one of the official photographers for the Bob Geldof’s “Live Aid” concert at London’s Wembley Stadium. In 1988 his association with Bruce Springsteen helped land him the job as official tour photographer for Amnesty International’s legendary “Conspiracy of Hope” tour, a 5 week world trek with Sting, Peter Gabriel, and Tracy Chapman appearing along with Springsteen. An accomplished photojournalist, Preston has shot stories and covers – not only on musicians- for a multitude of world-class magazines including Newsweek, Time, and Rolling Stone. In 1980 he began a 30 year-long relationship with People Magazine and to this day remains the most-assigned photographer in the history of the magazine, with almost 700 shoot days to his credit. After joining the International Cinematographers Guild in 1999 , Preston served as both the “unit” and “special” photographer for the feature films “Almost Famous”, “Vanilla Sky”, “Elizabethtown” , “We Bought a Zoo”, and “Aloha” , and recently completed work on season 1 of the Showtime television series “Roadies” (all directed by Cameron Crowe). Besides creating the key art for those projects, Preston also provided photos used in the feature films ” *61", “Singles”, “Laurel Canyon” and “Pick of Destiny” among others. Preston’s work has been displayed at such elite institutions as the Smithsonian in Washington D.C., the National Gallery in London, and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio . His iconic photograph of Freddie Mercury is part of the permanent photo exhibit at the new Wembley Stadium in London. His work is included in the permanent collection of the new Yankee Stadium in New York, and close to 100 of Preston’s photographs adorn the walls of the newly renovated Forum in Inglewood, California. https://www.prestonpictures.com/ https://www.amazon.com/Queen-Neal-Preston-Photographs/dp/1909526711/ref=sr_1_1?crid=IJGH61FDRLVD&dchild=1&keywords=neal+preston+queen&qid=1603925998&sprefix=neal+preston%2Caps%2C216&sr=8-1 (edited) Learn more about your ad choices. The Rock n Roll Archaeologist does some actual digging with the help of two veteran journalists, Bryan Reesman and Jeff Slate, as they discuss two recent re-releases from the rock n roll golden age, 1965’s POP GEAR and 1973’s That’ll Be the Day. Without a doubt one of the most ambitious pop group films ever produced, POP GEAR features Britain's top 16 groups and solo acts of the day, from The Beatles to The Animals to Herman's Hermits. Directed by Frederic Goode That’ll Be the Day. Jim MacLaine is 18-years old and studying for his advanced level exams, beginning to find his work increasingly irksome. He packs a suitcase, hitches a lift to the coast, and starts a new life with a new job. While working at a fairground, he's invited to a university dance by his old friend Terry, where he meets Terry's sister, Jeanette. They fall in love, marry, and when their first child is born, Jim seems content. But it is not long before he once again walks out in search of freedom and irresponsibility. Directed by Claude Whatham. Jeff Slate's music has appeared on the BBC and in shows like Gossip Girl and One Tree Hill. Jeff writes about music for the New Yorker, Wall Street Journal, Esquire, Rolling Stone, NBC News, and many other publications, contributed liner notes to the 50th anniversary edition of The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band and is the author of The Authorized Roy Orbison, a biography of the legend, with Orbison's sons. In 2018, Jeff wrote the liner notes for Bob Dylan's The Bootleg Series, Vol. 14: More Blood, More Tracks. Jeff is a regular visitor to SiriusXMs Volume, has appeared on Jonesy's Jukebox, and numerous podcasts -- such as Roadie Free Radio and the Rockonomics Podcast, as well as numerous Bob Dylan- and Beatles-themed shows -- and local TV and radio shows. The Rock N Roll Archaeologist goes back to the Beatles well with author Ken McNab, who’s new book examines the last days of the Fab Four. It’s called ‘And in the End: The Last Days of the Beatles’. Ken and Christian go through the details and the aftermath of demise of perhaps the single greatest cultural phenomenon of the 20th Century. Ken McNab's in-depth look at The Beatles' acrimonious final year is a detailed account of the breakup featuring the perspectives of all four band members and their roles. A must to add to the collection of Beatles fans, And In the End is full of fascinating information available for the first time. McNab reconstructs for the first time the seismic events of 1969, when The Beatles reached new highs of creativity and new lows of the internal strife that would destroy them. Between the pressure of being filmed during rehearsals and writing sessions for the documentary Get Back, their company Apple Corps facing bankruptcy, Lennon's heroin use, and musical disagreements, the group was arguing more than ever before and their formerly close friendship began to disintegrate. In the midst of this rancour, however, emerged the disharmony of Let It Be and the ragged genius of Abbey Road, their incredible farewell love letter to the world. KEN MCNAB is a lifelong Beatles fan and well-respected journalist with Scotland's Evening Times. He lives in Glasgow with his wife and children. https://www.amazon.com/End-Last-Days-Beatles-ebook/dp/B084F93TKQ/ref=sr_1_1?crid=20ZDEL9LR594P&dchild=1&keywords=and+in+the+end&qid=1598460144&sprefix=and+in+the+%2Caps%2C238&sr=8-1 Learn more about your ad choices. Russ Kunkel

Russ Kunkel

2020-08-2001:44:59

Christian and Russ Kunkel sit down to go over a long illustrious career as first call session drummer, road dog and being the heartbeat of the Immediate Family Band! Famous drummer Russell Kunkel, better known as Russ, has been a part of the music world for more than two memorable decades. Serving as drummer, and sometimes even as producer, Kunkel has appeared and performed with top musical artists in almost every genre and style known to fans, including Sydney Forest, Stevie Nicks, Wynonna Judd, Aaron Neville, Dan Fogelberg, James Taylor, the Bee Gees, Dolly Parton, Jimmy Buffet, B. B. King, Bob Segar, Carly Simon, and many, many others. Kunkel has also been featured in, and been on the cover of, magazines such as Modern Drummer. Kunkel was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania but by the age of nine he moved to Southern California. There, he was part of an orchestra at the local elementary school. Prior to moving, he was influenced by his brother and the song "Wipe Out" to play drums. During his high school years he lived in Long Beach, California. He played for approximately six different bands, including the Barons, and appeared at many sock hops and high school dances, playing surf music and Beatles songs. In his last two years of high school he was a jazz drummer and later worked for John Stewart and his band the Kingston Trio. In early 1970s, while rehearsing for the upcoming tour, he met Chris Darrow, a former player of John Stewart's, who was a friend of Peter Asher, and together along with James Taylor and bassist Leland Sklar they had put out an album. Later on, guitarist Danny Kortchmar came to them from The Flying Machine along with keyboardist Craig Doerge and together, the four of them, had formed a band called The Section. The group existed between 1972 and 1977, during which time they had recorded three albums.  Three years later, Kunkel participated in the Carly Simon's song "Waterfall" and played a part in the James Taylor's album Gorilla in a song "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)". In 1977 during the recording of Jackson Browne's Running on Empty album, Kunkel played on Pearl and North Drum sets, and went on a tour to promote the album. During the same year, Kunkel played hi-hat on the Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young album CSN. A year later, he worked with Warren Zevon on Excitable Boy as part of the Section. In 1980 during his tour with Jackson Browne to promote his album Hold Out, he played a tom, a floor tom, a bass drum, a snare drum, and two cymbals. During those years, he also was a drummer for the Lawyers In Love album where he played in a song "Say It Isn’t True". In 1980s album Mad Love by Linda Ronstadt, Kunkel along with Waddy Wachtel and Danny Kortchmar performed in the songs "How Do I Make You" and "Mad Love". In 1980, Kunkel played in Linda Ronstadt's band for a concert that was shown on HBO, along with the guitarists Kenny Edwards and Danny Kortchmar, bassist Bob Glaub, keyboardist Billy Payne, pedal steel guitarist Dan Dugmore, and backing vocalist Wendy Waldman.  https://www.facebook.com/TheImmedFamily Learn more about your ad choices. The Rock N Roll Archaeologist finds a new band to love! Join Christian as he interviews Josh Kennedy, lead guitarist of The Black Moods. Straight ahead rock n roll that reminds the Archaeologist of the fictional band from Almost Famous, 'Stillwater'! The Black Moods play raw, amplified rock & roll. Born in the Arizona desert and reared on stages across North America, the band delivers a modern update of a timeless sound, breathing fresh life into a familiar mix of electric guitars, anthemic hooks, and percussive stomp. The Black Moods' three members — frontman/guitarist Josh Kennedy, drummer Chico Diaz and bassist Jordan Hoffman — aren't looking to reinvent the wheel. Instead, they're piling into a vehicle that's existed for decades, souping up the engine to suit their contemporary needs, and steering those wheels toward their own rock & roll horizon. The band formed in Tempe, Arizona. Inspired by local heroes like the Gin Blossoms and Roger Clyne & the Peacemakers — both of whom have become champions of the Black Moods, often tapping the group as a high-profile opening act — The Black Moods began building their audience the old-school way: by hitting the road. They toured heavily, promoting albums like their 2012 self-titled debut and 2016's Medicine with gigs across the country. By the time "Bella Donna" hit the radio airwaves during the summer of 2018, The Black Moods' fanbase had grown exponentially. The song became a Top 40 hit on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart, paving the way for the band's biggest shows to date. Modern-day torchbearers of ageless rock & roll, The Black Moods aren't shy about nodding to their influences. "Bella Donna" was partially inspired by the Doors' slinky strut, while the climatic chorus of "Bad News" points to alt-rock mainstays like the Foo Fighters. With one boot planted in the same ground as their influences and the other pointed toward unexplored territory, The Black Moods blaze their own path while still paying tribute to those who came before them. Both "Bella Donna" and "Bad News" were recorded with Grammy Award-nominated producer Johnny "K" Karkazis, who flew to Phoenix and set up a makeshift studio in the band's own rehearsal space. There, in the same practice facility once shared by hometown heroes like the Refreshments, the band funneled the spirit and swagger of their live show into their most dynamic recordings to date. That live show — which The Black Moods sharpened with cross-country tours alongside the Doors' Robbie Krieger, Shinedown, Jane's Addiction, Eve 6, Cracker, and numerous other headliners — has always been one of the band's strongest selling points. Now, thanks to singles like "Bella Donna" (which also lends its name to the first wine in The Black Moods' wine series), The Black Moods' fury and fire onstage is matched by their electricity on record. The band's name is The Black Moods. And these days, those black moods are looking pretty bright .https://theblackmoods.com/ Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
This week the Rock N Roll Archaeologist goes Weird!! Well Christian sits down with Lily Hirsch, author of the new book Weird Al: Seriously. From his love of accordions and Hawaiian print shirts to his popular puns and trademark dance moves, "Weird Al" Yankovic has made a career out of making us laugh. Funny music is often dismissed as light and irrelevant, but Yankovic’s fourteen successful studio albums prove there is more going on than comedic music's reputation suggests. In this book, for the first time, the parodies, original compositions, and polka medleys of the Weird Al universe finally receive their due respect. Lily Hirsch weaves together original interviews with the prince of parody himself, creating a fresh take on comedy and music’s complicated romance. She reveals that Yankovic’s jests have always had a deeper meaning, addressing such topics as bullying, celebrity, and racial and gender stereotypes. Weird Al is undeterred by those who say funny music is nothing but a low-brow pastime. And thank goodness. With his good-guy grace still intact, Yankovic remains unapologetically and unmistakably himself. Reveling in the mischief and wisdom of Yankovic’s forty-year career, this book is an Al-expense-paid tour of a true comedic and musical genius. Lily E. Hirsch has written four books on topics ranging from Jewish music's history to music in criminal law. One, in 2014, won the American Musicological Society's Ruth A. Solie Award. When not teaching or writing as a visiting scholar at California State University, Bakersfield, Hirsch blogs at insultingmusic.com. She lives in Bakersfield, California. https://www.amazon.com/Weird-Al-Seriously-Lily-Hirsch/dp/1538124998/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=lily+hirsch&qid=1594946271&sr=8-1 https://www.lilyhirsch.com/ THis show is part of Pantheon Podcasts Learn more about your ad choices. Leland Sklar

Leland Sklar

2020-07-0202:05:57

Christian sits down with Immediate Family member, bassist Leland Sklar! This is the first in a series of interviews that will highlight all the members of the band (Legends to a man), we will be releasing over the Summer. Lee Sklar has been a prominent figure among Hollywood session bassists dating back to the 1970s and ever since. Sklar (born Leland Bruce Sklar, May 28, 1947, Milwaukee, WI) has more than 2000 albums to his credit (and still counting), and is considered to be one of the "A" players in the highly selective L.A. rock music community where the competition for recording dates is fierce, and where only the strongest will survive. His very recognizable bass playing style has been heard on hits by Linda Ronstadt, James Taylor, Hall & Oates, Jackson Browne, Phil Collins, Clint Black, Reba McEntire, and George Strait, to name just a few. And never one to remain idle, Sklar has entered the new millennium with a vengeance, taking on new projects with Willie Nelson, Steven Curtis Chapman, Nils Lofgren, Lisa Loeb, and many more. The reputation of a fine session player is not held exclusively to the record industry. Television and motion picture musical directors have called upon Sklar for his expertise countless times. He has played on TV shows such as Hill Street Blues, Knight Rider, Simon and Simon, and also on many motion pictures, including Forrest Gump, Ghost, Kindergarten Cop, and My Best Friend's Wedding. The list is virtually endless. Sklar moved from Wisconsin to Southern California when he was very young and started playing piano at age four. When he entered Birmingham Junior High in Van Nuys he fully intended to continue as a pianist in the school music program but found that there was an overabundance of piano students, but no string bass players. His instructor, Mr. Ted Lynn, asked Sklar if he would consider playing bass and, if so, he would teach him. As Sklar stated it, "...my life changed. Piano took a back seat and bass was it!" It was toward the end of the '60s and after completing his education at California State University, Northridge, as a music/art major that Sklar met James Taylor and they started doing some gigs. They thought they might be playing together for about a month, but then Taylor's "Fire and Rain" became a huge hit record and Sklar's career began to gain steam. Sklar's first sessions were with Taylor. The buzz surrounding this new bass player didn't take long to spread around Hollywood, and suddenly there was an icon in the making. Over the years Sklar has worked with nearly all of the top session players in Hollywood, but on the backs of album covers his name seems to pop up more frequently alongside drummer Russ Kunkel, guitarist Dan Kortchmar, and keyboardist Craig Doerge. This quartet would come to be known as the Section and they would record three of their own albums between 1972 and 1977 with the participation of additional select side personnel. Occasionally the Section would give a subtly announced live performance, much to the delight of their esoteric followers who would seek them out and feast on their mastery. https://www.facebook.com/TheImmedFamily/ https://www.facebook.com/LelandSklarOfficial/ Learn more about your ad choices.
