Jack Hughes makes it all look so easy! Combined with solid performances from Jesper Bratt and the overall team - Jack continue to reset the narrative on Saturday night, leading the Devils to a 6-3 win over the Blue Jackets in Columbus. Winners of eight out of their last ten, the DPL hosts look at where they can go on the upcoming home stand, and how time and patience has paid real dividends in judging where this team can go in the big NHL picture. The guys talk game preview as the Bruins come to town, with Adam spotlighting the Devils league best Power Play against the Bruins top shelf Penalty Kill. Beyond the Special Teams play, and notable key defenseman, the guys discuss Timo Meier, who has been underwhelming thus far for New Jersey. A player who is meant to be a steady hand, and physical play creator, Timo will find himself on the Right Wing with Jack Hughes looking for a spark as the mid-season review approaches. The Brother's Hughes did not disappoint. While it took Quinn a bit longer, in the end all three siblings, sharing the NHL ice together for the first time, succeeded on the Tuesday Night game. The Devils provided a explosive four goal first period, but in true 2023 fashion found themselves tied 5-5 late in the third period. Jesper Bratt sealed the win with his second goal of the night, but in the end it was Vitek Vanecek that took thee spotlight once again. Average in the first, strong in the second and a meltdown in the third. The inconsistent play between the pipes continues to be a concern for the Devils. The guys look at the poor play of Vitek Vanecek, and why Akira Schmid needs to given a chance in the starting role. Fans seem to want to go after Lindy Ruff, which brings the question, what game are we watching? With stability coming to the defense, and Nico Hischier guiding the squad back on course, it is only between the pipes where the very real concerns should be. The guys look back at tthe Rangers loss, and what went wrong late. Jack Hughes is back, but the Devils will now be without the steadying presence of Timo Meier. In a rocky start to the 2023 season, the next six games represent, on paper, a stretch where New Jersey can get a few wins under their belt - and push off the narrative that this team is in the first phase of a letdown year. The guys look at the sustainability of the Devils offense without Jack Hughes. The loss of Nico Hischier may actually be amplified now as well, as his stead board play has proven critical to consistency in the offensive zone. The guys discuss the Devils early season through the prism of the in house Draft Battle. No surprise Adam dominated, but as Danny poses the Dawson mercer question - the guys go inside some key statistical numbers to breakdown where Mercer and the Devils have seen production. For the second straight game Jack Hughes and the high flying offense looked great... once they got going. On a back-to-back opening the season, the Devils struggled to find there offensive rhythm, and even with Akira Schmid playing excellent - found themselves down 2-0 in the second period. A chaotic 20-minute session filled with seven total penalties and three Devils goals thrust them into a third period lead. But with all but one defenseman spending time in the Penalty Box Neew Jersey coughed up the lead, and following OT, the Win went to the Yotes on a Penalty Shootout. For a young team, with championship goals, consistent and penatly free hockey needs to be the cornerstone of their success. Jack Hughes came to play at the Rock on opening night! While it ttook the Devils 20 minutes to find their rhythm but showed off many of the attributes we expect to carry them through a long 82-game season. Beyond Jack Hughes speed, puck handling and clinical finishing, there was Vitek Vanecek - who without question held the Devils in the game early and provided Power Play and Short-Handed saves in critical moments. It was however, not the complete game Danny and Adam wanted to see. Special Teams showed some familiar struggles to a year ago, and surprisingly the Devils failed to win the face-of battle by a significant margin. In the end the result is all that matters in the early days of the season and New Jersey did just that, securing the home opener win. Adam Armbrecht looks at Luke Hughes and the Devils final preseason game. It was a young display in the last tune-up as Simon Nemec, Tyce Thompson and the young prospects for New Jersey saw plenty of ice-time. Simon Nemec showed off exactly why he has a bright future, picking up his second goal of camp.; There was however plenty to watch from a regular season standpoint as Akira Schmid gave a mid-season performance, turning away several critical shots. Nate Bastian also got himself more run as he looks to work himself back into form. Adam highlights the successful Penalty Kill Unit's and Curtis Lazar's continued versatility. Jack Hughes scores, Luke Hughes scores, Jesper Bratt scores. Need we say more? The Devils have taken a weakness in their Power Play performance and seemingly turned it into a potential top NHL strength. Adam highlights the confident and deliberate nature of the Special Teams for New Jersey on both ends, which leads to discussing Simon Nocek's emerging role, the pesky play of Curtis Lazar, and the overall excitement around getting thee meaningful games this year! Should Simon Nemec watch from the bench, or get reps in the AHL? Thatt is the debate between Danny and Adam. They look at the play of Smith and Miller and disagree on where the best value should be for Simon Nemec. On Offense, camp has shown exactly why Curtis Lazar was picked up last season, a grinding full effort guy the Devils want on that fourth line. The question now, will Nocek be locked into the starting role - Or could Tyce Thompson and Nolan Foote make a case for a NHL spot? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Jack and Luke Hughes showcased every bit of their sibling connection on the Devils Power Play against the Rangers. It has the guys very excited about a 2022 weakness becoming a very dangerous weapon in 2023. Adam looks to be proven right at the moment, predicting Alexander Holtz would start on the second line - a position he will need to continue his strong preseason in order to maintain. The guys then discuss the impressive top line with Jesper Bratt, Jack Hughes and Tyler Toffoli and if this now becomes one of the top lines in the NHL. DPL closes out by discussing the young players on the Devils - Simon Nemec may ultimately start in the AHL, while Graeme Clarke seems to still have NHL buzz - All of which is a great reminder of the incoming talent Devils fans can be excited for. With the Flyers on tap tonight, Tyce Thompson and Santeri Hatakka remain players to watch as they have provided impressive preseason samples thus far. Learn more about your ad choices. Alexander Holtz put together the two-way performance fans needed to see in the pre-season opener. For a player very much under the microscope the Devils young offensive talent looks poised to emerge as a key figure this season. Tyce Thompson and Santeri Hatakka also showcased the Devils AHL depth, and potentially the next wave of in-season call ups. The guys are deligghted by Jesper Bratt's mid-season form and discuss how the top lines could shape up with Jack Hughes. They also look at some promising results on the Power Play as well as a tactical shiftt away from the dump and chase mentality - one which Adam has long viewed as damning to the on puck talent possession the Devils have. Itt is a deep ranging and excited look at how the Devils enter the pre-season, how Lindy Ruff will explore player combinations, and the depth New Jersey brings to the season ahead! The guys discuss the track for AHL prospect Greaem Clarke to emerge as an NHL contributor. The path forward is a bit more congested with not only plenty of Offensive talent on board, but also a talented Defensive core that could occupy Power Play roles as well. The guys take a look at the Offense for the New Jersey Devils and specifically Timo Meier. Yes, expectations are high, but is a career year possible? The guys discuss which line Timo could or should play on, how his phyiscal role could impact the box score, and wether or not the Hockey Podcast Network is disrespecting the Devils Winger, leaving him outside the top 20 at the position. Replacing gRyan Graves and Damon Severson have two straight forward answers: Kevin Bahl and Luke Hughes. The question becomes who is best to serve on the second pairing with John Marino? Stylistically, the Devils could create a dominant defense combination with Bahl and Marino, or give Luke Hughes a trusteed anchor allowing the offensive minded young player to use his speed and dynamic playmaking. Beyond, or specifically behind the defense the guys also discuss Vanecek and Schmid, who deserves to start the season and ultimately who will get plugged in as the primary anchor between the pipes. This is on the list of offseason fears for Devils fans - Tomas Tatar, veteran NHL Wing, rumored to possibly join the Pittsburgh Penguins. Having already discussed how DPL things the Penguins have a bounce-back year, adding Tatar would certainly sting the fan base. Making the pain all but disappear however, could be as simple as Alexander Holtz meeting expectations to start the upcoming season. The 21 year old is plugged in on the third line and can finally convert his AHL stats into NHL success. The guys discuss his role, how Lindy Ruff will approach his development, and if Holtz could well be both starter and trade fodder all at the same time. Adam and Danny also close out the show discussing the early schedule for New Jersey, and why Alexander Holtz could be afforded a longer leash, with(on paper) an easy opening slate.
