Welcome to the Diabetes Matters podcast. This new series is all why diabetes matters…because it does! Not just to the 290,000 people living with it, but to all New Zealanders. We’re talking to inspirational Kiwis, sports stars, experts and people with diabetes to find out what matters and why.
Diabetes is a complex condition that affects many parts of a person’s body. The good news is that with good support and a plan of action, there is a lot you can do to live a healthy life and prevent potential complications.
Today we are going to learn more about those complications and how to prevent them.
In today’s episode we are joined by two health care professionals who know a thing or two about supporting people with diabetes and helping to prevent the complications that can happen to someone with diabetes. We will also discover more about the Circle of Care that surrounds and supports someone living with diabetes to stay well.

Dr Bryan Betty – is a specialist GP in Porirua and the current president of the Royal College of GPs. He has been a part of and contributed to all levels of the health system in Aotearoa. Last year he was made an Officer of the NZ Order of Merit. He is a strong advocate for equity and access to quality healthcare for everyone, which can be demonstrated through his work advocating for improvements to NZ’s high rates of type 2 diabetes.
Liz Dutton - works at Diabetes New Zealand’s head office in Wellington as Service Development Manager and is a former Clinical Nurse Specialist in Diabetes. Being active is so important for diabetes management. Exercise lowers your blood glucose levels, increases your energy, lifts your mood and can also be a fun way to make friends. But how do you get started and how do you keep going?
In today’s episode we are joined by two amazing guests who will share their stories about their own transformations and give us some expert tips to stay active.

“What do I eat?” is one of the most common questions asked by people living with diabetes. Eating healthy is a powerful tool in managing all types of diabetes but knowing what to eat and when can be challenging. Today we are talking about Nutrition Matters including essentials of healthy eating, eating for better blood glucose control and busting food myths along the way.
In today’s episode we are joined by two wonderful guests who know a thing or two about eating well with diabetes.

Amanda Brien – has been dubbed “the non-judgemental nutritionist by her colleagues! You might recognise her voice from TVNZ’s top rated show Eat Well For Less. She is passionate about helping others to be healthy and most importantly, enjoying food. Her career in nutrition includes diabetes outreach as part of primary healthcare team in Auckland.
