Today, we dive into the award-winning film Black Swan 🦢 with our special guest, therapist, and eating disorder specialist Rebecca Capps. We explore key scenes to uncover the origins of Nina's eating disorder, the grooming by her coaches, and how her disorder contributes to her mental deterioration. We also look at the stark contrast between the White Swan and the Black Swan personas 🎭.
Rebecca discusses the perfectionism, self-harm, and delusional behavior that Nina exhibits, potentially leading to psychosis due to malnutrition and drug use. We'll see how Nina's drive for perfection 🩰 leads to destructive behaviors as she struggles to break free from her controlled state and experience a new side of herself.
We delve into the societal and gender norms impacting body image and dysmorphia, particularly for women. Rebecca explains the symptoms of different eating disorders and disordered eating patterns that many people face today.
We also highlight the importance of narrative therapy 📚, emphasizing that while someone may have an eating disorder, it doesn't define their entire identity. These two things are separate entities. Rebecca offers insights and resources from her website for those seeking support.
In our final scenes, we witness Nina's masterful dance as the Black Swan but also examine the toll her perfectionism has taken on her mental and physical health. We discuss the possible delusional behavior and psychosis resulting from her eating disorder and drug exposure.
Welcome Rebecca Capps! We hope you enjoy the show and the scenes from Black Swan. Don't miss out on the valuable insights and resources Rebecca shares. 🌟

Today we look at a scene from the Obi-Wan series where Darth Vader tried to hold them back using the force. He succeeds, but a secondary ship leaves from within. This scene can get a good representation of trying to control everything in life, and we feel the pressure and intensity it brings our lives. Needing to control with forceful actions/thinking can lead to high rates of anxiety, panic, and depression over time. Controlling every detail can comfort some, but nothing in life always goes to plan, and we need to adjust. Many people have a hard time letting go and being in the moment, enjoying the ride they are on. Most focus on outcomes while zooming past life. Because of this, try to enjoy life's passage, even the hard ones. If your anxiety and pressure to control feel like this clip, please think if this way of acting is helping or hurting your mental health and the relationships around you.

This week we looked at the show Life & Beth. You will notice she deals with not being happy at her job and relationships with her boyfriend, mother, and sister. Anxiety comes up often for her, and she had OCD when she was younger and dealt with pulling her own hair out due to stress. Later in the show, she reported some bullying and feeling left out, along with disliking herself. Over of these traumas lead to unhealthy relationships with others and ourselves when it comes to self-love. I wanted to pay attention to the things in her childhood, how they formed her adult years, and how it took a lot for her to break free of some old habits! I am sure people can relate to an excellent example of many mental health issues! Today's therapy example is what a panic attack looks like and how to deal with it. We find Obi-Wan hiding from Reva in Ep. 2, and she begins to let him know Anakin is alive. When he hears this, he starts to panic, as shown by his increased breathing rate, loudness, and facial expression of shock. One would assume many things are going through his head at that time and fears about what happened in the past and what is to come next. Join us as we talk about this scene and how others may use this to relate to panic or deeper fears. Today we look at a clone wars episode where Anakin has to make s choice about his life and what he wants to do with it. After seeing his future, he joins the dark side to stop himself from committing horrible crimes against humanity. He shows deep sadness, pain, guilt, shame, fear, and disappointment in himself and thinks joining the dark side now and teaming up with the other charter will prevent all the pain from happening to the people he loves. Many of us know what those emotions feel like when we look at our past choices and mistakes. It's hard to reflect on who we are or what we did. Sometimes the guilt and shame make us feel so bad we continue those behaviors and can not get out of the cycle. I wanted to show this scene to let others know that we all make mistakes; we do not have to cause ourselves to suffer daily. We grow each day and can do better each day, do your best to be kind to yourself and move into a place of acceptance but accountability. For those of us with trouble putting emotions into words, I hope this help when you feel indecisive or worried about things that took place in the past. Today we break down the Darth Vader scene in Rogue One. Darth comes out of the dark, trying to kill everyone before the information gets to where it needs to be. This is a good representation of what fear, anxiety, racing thoughts, negative thoughts, and depression could look like for many people. It comes out of nowhere fast and destroys any confidence, well-being, or joy you may have at the moment. We have all been there at some point in the day or in our lives. For those of us who struggle to article how we feel when in a panic attack or having racing thoughts that are negative and disrupt all the positive ones, this is how others could maybe understand what you go through. Today's scene breaks down of the Obi-Wan Series; we look at how it may feel to bottle up your emotions and feel like you are going to burst. Many clients may feel pressure or seal cracking when they bottle things up. As Obi-Wan holds back the water from rushing in, so do my clients when holding back tears, sadness, pain, and exhaustion from the week, months, or years. You may feel like it's helping to bottle things up, but it will blow up eventually. It is good to process and let things out in a slow but controlled way and not the BOOM way. This could represent anger and other big emotions as many of hold are doing our best to hold it together each day and sometimes moment by moment. Today we talk about Obi-Wan, how his guilt, shame, depression, and anxiety have taken his ability to move forward, and what that looks like for him in the show. Many people face these same issues, and now we can visualize what pain like this looks like. I find it hard not to have deep empathy for him struggling with his worth, abilities, and traumas before his self-imprisonment while in hiding. Self-compassion, trust, and support from others are required to come out of a slump like this, and what a fantastic show to help put words to mental health! How will he rise to the moment in this series, and can he get back some of the old versions of himself. This week we process the last episode of Moon Knight. We talked about self-compassion and healing from traumas. Some parts of us will always be there even if we get therapy and work on those things. Some folks will think that intrusive thoughts, old feelings, or triggering episodes in daily life mean you are not healed or broken. That is not true, we all carry those parts of our lives with us, but it gets easier to deal with and acknowledge but no longer controls you. For those of us with anger issues, it might be there with you, but it's manageable. Some would say it's ready if you ever need it.

In this scene, we look at Luis and how he acts/talks when given the truth serum. I would relate this to my clients first coming to therapy and not knowing what they will talk about, and by the end of the therapy session, they say, " wow, I didn't know I was going to say all that." Some feel embarrassed, some feel relieved and lighter, and some feel confused about how much they kept inside and needed to be let out. Talking to a therapist can be healing if you get the right one you can connect with. A therapist with a truth serum effect makes you feel comfortable enough to show your vulnerabilities and begin the process of healing! Clinically, I use humor to connect with my clients and enjoy bringing people smiles; even if they are at their lowest point, there is hope somewhere.

Moving forward, we will talk over video clips to show different ways to look at movies and how they can relate to therapy or mental health concepts. Today we chose Big Hero 6 and how meeting a new Therapist can feel. Sometimes it feels a bit odd, and sometimes it's childlike when asking how you feel and rate your pain from 0-10. I do not do this in my clinical work, but it can resemble what Baymax says and how he reacts to his client. When we see the pain, we assess what is going on and ask questions to get the information we need to help you with your wounds (mental health issues).
